How does Allscripts EMR Work?

Allscripts EMR medical software is a cloud-based system that is hosted on remote servers and accessed over the internet. It is designed to help healthcare providers manage patient information, schedule appointments, document patient visits, prescribe medications, and improve the quality of care. Here's a general overview of how the application works:

  • The system allows providers to easily input and update demographic, medical history, billing, and insurance information for each patient.
  • Physicians can also record patient visits, including assessments, diagnoses, and treatment plans, in real time. This information can then be used to make electronic progress notes that track a patient's treatment over time.
  • The software enables medical experts to electronically prescribe medications, view a patient's medication history, and check for potential drug interactions.
  • Allscripts supports integration with third-party EHR applications, allowing clinicians to share patient data across multiple systems and get a complete picture of the patient's health.
  • There are also tools for getting patients involved. Through the patient portal, patients can access their records, make appointments, and talk to their providers in real time.

Can Allscripts EMR be used in hospitals?

Yes, Allscripts EMR and practice management software can be used in hospitals and other inpatient settings. The Allscripts Sunrise EHR system is designed for larger healthcare organizations, including hospitals, and provides robust clinical documentation and workflows for inpatient care. This innovative solution helps organizations worldwide tackle population health challenges, changing reimbursement needs, and coordinated care. With open APIs, organizations can customize the platform to their unique protocols, document styles, and workflows for added security and compatibility with future solutions and ACOs.

What medical specialties does Allscripts EMR cater to?

Allscripts is used across a wide range of specialties, including family medicine, pediatrics, cardiology, neurology, oncology, internal medicine, and general practice.

It is also a popular EMR among behavioral health and substance abuse clinics.

Allscripts EMR Features

Allscripts EMR is an intuitive healthcare IT platform that can improve the overall functionality of your medical practice. It streamlines workflows and enhances patient care through the following features:

  • Appointment Scheduling
The software allows healthcare providers to schedule appointments, send automated appointment reminders, and view upcoming appointments in a centralized location. It also supports self-scheduling, enabling patients to schedule their appointments at their convenience. This can reduce no-shows and increase patient satisfaction.

  • Patient Portal
Allscripts’ patient portal feature enables patients to access their medical information, communicate with their healthcare providers, and request prescription refills.  Patients can also view their lab results, medication history, and make payments securely through this online portal.

  • E-prescriptions
Healthcare providers can electronically prescribe medications to their patients. This feature eliminates the need for paper prescriptions, which can save time for both the provider and the patient. With electronic prescribing, you can also reduce errors and improve the accuracy of medication orders.

  • Telehealth Capabilities
The telehealth feature of Allscripts EMR lets providers conduct virtual visits and monitor patients' vital signs, symptoms, and other relevant data from a distance, which helps them reach more patients and lowers healthcare costs.

  • Medical BillingAllscripts EMR empowers healthcare providers to manage patient billing, insurance claims, and revenue cycle management. The billing feature helps users keep track of their finances in an organized way. It also simplifies the process of claim submission and verifying insurance eligibility, reducing the administrative burden on staff.

How is Allscripts EMR Different from Other Software?

Allscripts is a robust EMR platform that stands out when compared to other products available on the market. Here's a comparison of how it stacks up against similar options:

Specialty-Specific: Allscripts is an advanced and specialized electronic medical record (EMR) system that is tailored to the unique needs of various clinical specialties. Unlike other "one-size-fits-all" medical software, it is made to meet the specific needs of different specialties, such as cardiology, internal medicine, pediatrics, and more.

Integrated Platform: Allscripts’ integrated platform allows for seamless integration with a practice's existing software ecosystem. This approach brings together all aspects of patient care within a single platform and enables users to manage their workflows efficiently. This is another thing that sets Allscripts apart from other EMR systems, which may not be as easy to integrate.

Customer Support and Training: The software offers a wide range of support and training resources to ensure successful utilization of the system by its users. These resources may include user manuals, online tutorials, customer support hotlines, and other tools. This aspect of Allscripts makes it an even more attractive option for practices and healthcare providers looking to implement EMR systems.

Is Allscripts EMR Software Right for You?

Allscripts EMR is a dependable medical software solution that offers a well-balanced set of tools to assist practices in streamlining their administrative, clinical, and financial tasks.

The EMR system offers top-notch after-sales services. It is an open platform; hence, it supports all devices. Allscripts PM also comes with an integrated employee health management program. With this solution, you can keep track of your staff's overall health and encourage a healthy lifestyle for all employees. In addition, users can track their progress and view their health plans online using this outstanding e-software.

The vendor has a strong reputation for providing reliable and effective solutions for healthcare organizations looking to enhance overall efficiency. Its ease of use, workflow automation tools, and excellent customer support have impressed many reviewers. Additionally, users have found the appointment scheduling feature particularly beneficial because it helps cut down on patients who don't show up for their appointments.

However, some users have reported that the software comes with a significant learning curve. An IT specialist  is required to set up and run the system. We recommend in-house IT support for a successful implementation.

Pros:
Running charts are available, which can be a prominent feature of Allscripts EMR Software.
Cons:
A few glitches here and there but no major ones that hinder our workflow.

Easy Charting

November 2022

Charity

YMCA of Greater Tulsa

Pros:
I was skeptical of going electronic but that’s the need of the hour and so we did. We chose Allscripts mainly because of its ease of use. Customization, charting and referrals have never been easier for us. I like how smoothly we can send out e-prescriptions to the pharmacies.
Cons:
Upgrades are done frequently which for me is overwhelming for someone who has used paper charts throughout his life. However, their customer support is always there to assist us with any challenges we face.

About the software

October 2022

Heather

Revere Health

Pros:
I like how easy it is to keep track of patient progress with Allscripts. Unlike many EMR companies I have used, Allscripts always considers our suggestions while rolling out any updates. This goes to show that they truly care about their customers. I like how we can see the history of the past 5 patients that we prescribed the medicines too. The scheduler is simple and effective.
Cons:
The only issue I am facing is with the untimely updates that hinder our daily tasks. If only they could roll out updates after business hours that would be great.

Easy to use

September 2022

Karla

Health and Wellness

Pros:
Allscripts EMR Software can keep a running graph for patients by separating it into classifications of MD notes, approvals, and even a running table on tasks/notes back and forward between providers/nurses or medical attendants. It solves the paper charts problem for us and has everything in one system which makes it easier to use.
Cons:
The software was lacking at certain points in the past but they have greatly improved it and it keeps on updating.

More than Satisfactory

September 2022

Rachael

Margaret Stripling DO

Pros:
We have been with the company for more than a decade and can safely say that it has evolved with time towards betterment. Allscripts EMR is intuitive and the system is accredited with all the necessary regulations and regulatory bodies. It’s easy to maneuver. Editions and changes can be made easily instead of discarding a certain template and restarting it from scratch.  This feature especially comes in handy for new hires.
Cons:
If they could mirror the same features in the offline system as they have in their online one that would be a great benefit to us.

Security

September 2022

Jessica

New England Hospice

Pros:
This product has all the latest security measures in place which makes it secure for me to send out any referrals. Allscripts EMR is updated with all the latest accreditation and government regulations. Apart from that, it is easy to maneuver and the overall workflow is very efficient that streamlines the workflow.
Cons:
One drawback that I found out was its inability to run on all kinds of applications which I hope they will work on in the coming days.
