What is AthenaHealth?

Overview

AthenaHealth EMR is an electronic health record (EHR) software designed for small to mid-sized healthcare organizations. As a cloud-based system, it allows healthcare providers to manage patient records, schedule appointments, order and track lab tests, and communicate with other clinical stakeholders involved in the care process.

In 2022, Athenahealth was crowned ‘#1 Best in KLAS’ for two of its features: athenaClinicals Ambulatory EHR and athenaIDX practice management.

What is AthenaHealth Best For?

AthenaHealth EMR software is best known for its cloud-based architecture and integrated platform, which includes features for managing patient records, scheduling appointments, managing billing and revenue, and coordinating care with other members of the healthcare team.

The EHR software surfaces real-time data and insights from a network of 135K clinicians, which means medical practitioners can access more comprehensive information during encounters. The network also enables seamless patient record sharing through the company’s connections with Carequality and CommonWell–national-level frameworks for health data sharing.

In addition to its EHR software, AthenaHealth (the company) offers a range of other services, such as revenue cycle management, patient engagement, and population health management.

How does AthenaHealth Work?

AthenaHealth EMR can be accessed through a web browser or mobile app. All its data is stored in the cloud, meaning it can be accessed from any device with an internet connection.

To use AthenaHealth EMR software, healthcare providers need to create a user account and log in to the vendor’s system. Once in, they can access a range of features and tools designed to help them manage patient records, schedule appointments, oversee billing and revenue, and coordinate care with other members of the healthcare team.

In addition, AthenaHealth EMR offers users the ability to access athenaOne its mobile app solution.

AthenaOne is a medical software suite that integrates electronic health records (EHR), medical billing tools, revenue cycle management (RCM), and medical practice management.

Who is AthenaHealth For?

AthenaHealth EMR software is designed to support a wide range of medical specialties and can be used by healthcare providers in various settings, including primary care, specialty care, and hospital-based care. It can also be used by healthcare organizations of different sizes, from small practices to large hospitals.

Here are the practices it serves:

  • Independent medical practices
  • Hospitals and health systems
  • Medical startups
  • Member-centric organizations
  • Ancillary Service organizations
  • Internal and family medicine settings

The software, in addition to being a great all-purpose EMR, is particularly suited for these specialties:

  • Pediatrics
  • Cardiology
  • FQHC
  • Ob-Gyn
  • Urgent Care
  • Orthopedics
  • Gastroenterology
  • Behavioral Health

How is AthenaHealth different from other software?

With a range of EMR software available on the market, it can be difficult to select which is the best fit for you and your team. Here are some ways in which AthenaHealth EMR differs from other popular EMR software:

  • Cloud-based: AthenaHealth EMR is a cloud-based system, which means that all data is stored in the cloud and can be accessed from any device with an internet connection. This is in contrast to on-premises EMR systems, which require users to install and maintain the application on their own servers.
  • Integrated platform: AthenaHealth EMR includes a range of features and tools that are designed to work seamlessly together, including patient records, scheduling, billing, and care coordination. This integrated approach can make it easier for users to manage all aspects of patient care within a single platform.
  • Customization options: AthenaHealth EMR allows users to customize certain aspects of the system, such as the layout and appearance of patient records. This can be helpful for users who want to tailor the system to meet the specific needs of their practice.
  • Customer support and training: AthenaHealth EMR provides support and training to help users get the most out of its platform. This can be especially helpful for users who are new to EMR software.

Is AthenaHealth Right for You?

AthenaHealth EMR is widely used by various medical professionals, organizations, and practices. Serving medical professionals in the US for over 20 years, the platform is suitable for healthcare organizations of any size and specialty.

Many users have recommended AthenaHealth for its ease of use and reporting functionality, making its deployment equally beneficial for both medical offices and patients. In addition, many have found running reports on AthenaHealth EMR to be relatively straightforward, with each one tailored to a specific practitioner.

However, some users have noted the price of AthenaHealth EMR as being a bit too high for its features, particularly for smaller practices that may not have the resources to invest in a comprehensive EMR system.

AthenaHealth Features

The main feature of AthenaHealth is its electronic health records system which streamlines documentation and improves clinical efficiency. With system protocols like pre-encounter prep and customizable workflows, you’ll be able to spend less time documenting and boost accuracy and engagement. The software also integrates with a mobile app called athenaOne where you can access patient records and do other clinical work on the go.

On AthenaHealth EMR, you can communicate with patients at scale to deliver health information online, streamline payment, and enable self-scheduling for appointments. Patients can exchange messages with physicians, view lab test results, and request prescription refills using mobile devices. Automated reminders and notifications regarding appointments, billing, and follow-up care are also available. Through AthenaHealth EMR’s patient portal, patients can easily schedule appointments and, view their current medical history, medications, and supplements online. Healthcare professionals, further, can configure the platform’s functionality to meet their practice’s needs, drive patient satisfaction, and limit manual scheduling tasks for front desk staff.

If you’re an independent medical practice, collecting what you’re owed is one of the biggest challenges. With AthenaHealth’s integrated services like authorization management, medical coding, and denials resolution, you’ll be able to collect more revenue faster (and with less work). If you work at a large, complex healthcare organization, you can lower cost-to-collect and reduce A/R days through low-touch, automated workflows on AthenaHealth EMR. You’ll also be able to tailor the RCM product to your needs and integrate it with your current clinical solutions.

AthenaHealth EMR provides its users with features for managing their medical bills, and revenue, improving first-pass resolution rates by scrubbing insurance claims to detect errors prior to submission. In addition, the platform’s fostered high return on investment can help increase small to medium-sized health organizations’ revenue in the long run.

Through TeleHealth, healthcare providers will be able to conduct virtual visits with patients remotely, using videoconferencing or phone calls. This can be especially useful during the COVID-19 pandemic, when in-person visits may not be possible or may pose a risk to patients and providers. During the telehealth appointment, you can directly chat with patients, conduct virtual examinations, review patient records, and discuss treatment options. Then, you can update their records directly and record notes from the appointment on the AthenaHealth software.

AthenaHealth EMR includes tools for generating reports, tracking performance metrics, and analyzing data to help healthcare practices improve their operations. In addition, the platform allows providers to access and update patient records, including medical history, patient charts, patient data, medications, allergies, and test results in real-time.

Pros

Two years ago I had my first encounter with Athena Health when I visited my Primary Care doctor. The instructions for accessing my results were provided through their portal and I was eagerly awaiting them. To my delight I logged in and promptly found my results available. What made it truly convenient was that my doctor had included notes next to each result indicating if they were elevated or outside the normal range. I didn't have to wait for a phone call; I had immediate feedback right in the portal. I am grateful to Athena for making the entire process so effortless and seamless.

Cons

I have no complaints about Athena! It's extremely convenient.

Pros

The initial setup of the EMR was straightforward and the billing functionality was satisfactory at first.

Cons

Any requests for improvement are consistently ignored. For instance we were promised an Android app from the beginning but even after 13 years it remains an unfulfilled promise. They simply tell us to "put it on the suggestion board." However my reason for writing this review today is the sudden and significant price increase. Despite being assured that the price (a percentage of gross collections) would decrease over time they have once again raised the percentage they take. They attribute this to "inflation" but it's clear that they are simply taking a larger portion of the revenue without our consent and without engaging in contract negotiations. It's completely dishonest and we are left with no choice in the matter.

Frequently Asked Questions
