AthenaHealth EMR Software

What is AthenaHealth EMR Software?

Overview

AthenaHealth EMR is an electronic health record (EHR) software designed for small to mid-sized healthcare organizations. As a cloud-based system, it allows healthcare providers to manage patient records, schedule appointments, order and track lab tests, and communicate with other clinical stakeholders involved in the care process.

In 2022, Athenahealth was crowned ‘#1 Best in KLAS’ for two of its features: athenaClinicals Ambulatory EHR and athenaIDX practice management.

What is AthenaHealth EMR Best For?

AthenaHealth EMR software is best known for its cloud-based architecture and integrated platform, which includes features for managing patient records, scheduling appointments, managing billing and revenue, and coordinating care with other members of the healthcare team.

The EHR software surfaces real-time data and insights from a network of 135K clinicians, which means medical practitioners can access more comprehensive information during encounters. The network also enables seamless patient record sharing through the company’s connections with Carequality and CommonWell–national-level frameworks for health data sharing.

In addition to its EHR software, AthenaHealth (the company) offers a range of other services, such as revenue cycle management, patient engagement, and population health management.

AthenaHealth EMR Features

On AthenaHealth EMR, you can communicate with patients at scale to deliver health information online, streamline payment, and enable self-scheduling for appointments. Patients can exchange messages with physicians, view lab test results, and request prescription refills using mobile devices. Automated reminders and notifications regarding appointments, billing, and follow-up care are also available.

Through AthenaHealth EMR’s patient portal, patients can easily schedule appointments and, view their current medical history, medications, and supplements online.

This integrated approach can make it easier for users to manage all aspects of patient care within a single platform.

Is AthenaHealth EMR Right for You?

AthenaHealth EMR is widely used by various medical professionals, organizations, and practices. Serving medical professionals in the US for over 20 years, the platform is suitable for healthcare organizations of any size and specialty.

Many users have recommended AthenaHealth for its ease of use and reporting functionality, making its deployment equally beneficial for both medical offices and patients. In addition, many have found running reports on AthenaHealth EMR to be relatively straightforward, with each one tailored to a specific practitioner.

Comprehensive EHR Solution with Onboarding Challenges

August 2023

Abigail

Mental Health Care

Pros:
AthenaOne proved to be a comprehensive all-in-one EHR system with an array of desirable features. It enabled the consolidation of various software tools into a single platform, making it a valuable option.
Cons:
The onboarding process was the most challenging aspect of AthenaOne, with a lengthier implementation period than initially anticipated. The initial sales representative's representation of the onboarding's extent was inaccurate, leading to the need for multiple dedicated employees working on integration for an extended duration.

Beneficial Patient Access Tool

July 2023

Lisa

Hospital & Health Care,501-1,000 employees

Pros:
The products capability to provide access to patient information and charts even when the provider is unavailable or outside regular hours was emphasized as essential.
Cons:
A slight challenge was noted in terms of the learning curve and navigation for new users.

Mixed Feelings About the System

June 2023

David W.

Mid-Market

Pros:
Once the system is set up, it does seem to work well. The support after implementation is adequate, and the system itself functions decently.
Cons:
Setting up the system is a horrible and confusing experience. The team assigned to assist with setup often lacks sufficient knowledge about how the system works, making the process even more frustrating. Unfortunately, the system lacks essential pre-formatted tools, reports, workflows, and other necessary elements for operating a standard medical practice. Its non-intuitive workflows make it difficult to use, and theres no easy-to-access daily dashboard for activity and payments.

April 2023

Pros:
The customer service is great and managing the billing is straightforward.
Cons:
We have no complaints about Aetna as they have provided us with good service.

Mixed Bag with Some Likable Aspect

March 2023

Dannielle S.

Small-Business

Pros:
I appreciate the interfaces purple color, and generally, the system is user-friendly. Athena text is a standout feature, and scheduling within the program is quite easy. Additionally, labeling and organizing documents are relatively simple tasks. I also like the swift verification process for most insurances.
Cons:
Unfortunately, Athena has a tendency to overcomplicate things unnecessarily. The prescription management is particularly frustrating as it doesnt allow for easy closure of prescriptions; instead, the only option is to deny them, causing headaches. Additionally, responding to patient cases is needlessly complicated.

The user-friendly medical record is thorough, and payment processes are simplified. AthenaOne seamlessly integrates with a clinical network, providing access to extra resources. Furthermore, the patient engagement feature fosters stronger relationships and improves overall care.
Cons:
While AthenaOne can be a bit costly to buy and implement, and may demand more training to take full advantage of its features, it ultimately offers long-term benefits that make the expense and time worth it.
