“Fast Smart View reporting”
Pros
One of the best parts of Hyperion is being able to pull data into offline Excel files whenever Smart View is enabled. Refreshes happen quickly and the data comes through clearly which makes it simple to tie everything back to the total amounts entered in the system. At our company, we use the application to store revenue and expense details by client, account and period and it gives us a lot of flexibility to manipulate reports and Excel files so we can pull the information exactly the way we need it.
Cons
Where things gets frustrating is on the input side. Pulling data out is quick and easy but uploading into different schedules and memo templates can be much more difficult than it should be. Every month for example we have to upload re-phased projected revenue by month and if Client A previously had $100 booked but now should be changed to $0, the system will not accept the zero. If data was entered before, it seems to require some kind of value to be resubmitted, so instead of entering the correct zero, we end up wasting extra time typing in .000000001 for each month, client and account.

“easy to scale”
Pros
It handles long-range planning really well and the capital reporting capabilities are a big plus. The platform also scales nicely which makes it a great fit for larger planning needs.
Cons
The user interface feels dated and waiting on business rules to run can slow things down more than it should.

“good for planning and analysis”
Pros
Working with Hyperion Planning every day, it has become an essential part of how I handle both project management and financial analysis across large data sets. It's a key tool in my daily workflow and adds a lot of value.
Cons
One limitation I run into is when I need to query multiple tables at the same time. In those cases, it can feel restrictive, so I sometimes switch back to SQL or Access to get the results faster.

“Packed with powerful planning tools”
Pros
From what I have seen, the data entry and extraction capabilities in this product are excellent. As with most systems, how effective it is really depends on the quality of management and ongoing maintenance behind it. The companies where I used Hyperion had strong support teams and managed the tools well which made them very valuable in day-to-day use.
Cons
One area that could be much better is the UI/UX especially when it comes to Excel integration. The web forms weren't optimized across all browsers and could be pretty slow at times. Smart View performs much better from a speed standpoint but its interface is less user-friendly. If you work heavily in Excel, you'll probably end up creating a few personal macros just to cut down on repetitive keystrokes.

“Powerful planning and reporting”
Pros
Oracle Hyperion Planning works really well as a planning and reporting tool because it gives finance teams a simple way to monitor key financial metrics across the business. The Planning forms make data entry simple for analysts who need to enter and manage budgets, forecasts, actuals, commitments and other business scenarios. All of that Planning data sits in Essbase which is a multi-dimensional database, while the relational database piece helps with loading metadata into the system. That setup is also useful for things like bringing in actuals from an ERP system. A big strength of it is how much faster reporting becomes. I have seen plenty of teams rely on Excel spreadsheets to manage financial data and putting together a report for leadership could take hours or even days. Smart View cuts out a lot of that manual effort. Since it is an Excel add-in for Planning, users can pull data quickly with ad-hoc analysis and build different kinds of reports from Planning data, including sales reports, capital expenditure reports and variance reporting such as Budget vs. Actuals. If you also use Hyperion Financial Reporting, it gives you even more flexibility to build customized reports for end users.
Cons
The area I feel like that still needs improvement is performance. At times, scrolling through dimensions, searching within them and even rendering data forms can feel slow. Oracle has mentioned performance improvements in version 11.1.2.4 but I have not had the chance to test that release in a real business setting yet. The multi-dimensional database structure can also introduce some limitations when it comes to pulling metadata.

“A custom fit with strong ROI”
Pros
One of the biggest advantages is how much you can tailor it to fit specific business requirements. I helped co-lead a customization project at a previous company and the outcome was a major success.
Cons
It really gives back exactly what you put into it. As soon as you move beyond the off-the-shelf setup, the investment needed becomes quite substantial. Even with that, the people-side ROI is very strong because it saves a lot of time and makes it possible to generate state-of-the-art reports with just a click.

“Top budgeting and planning platform”
Pros
Instead of juggling countless Excel files, Hyperion Planning gives businesses a much better way to handle budgeting and planning while improving both efficiency and overall effectiveness. It helps shift staff effort away from manually pulling together prior-year budget and actuals data in spreadsheets and puts that time back into analysis and decision-making. Oracle has continued to invest in the product since the acquisition and it has a well-established presence across a large client base and a wide range of industries.
Cons
Implementation can take longer than expected because it needs detailed design work and configuration for each customer. That said the extra effort usually leads to a solution tailored to the specific needs of the business. It can also run into issues with very large datasets, although those can often be addressed through custom approaches, performance tuning and the right software and hardware adjustments.
