Best for digitizing docs

Pros

HotDocs has proven to be a game changer for me as it saves me countless hours that I used to spend filling out and reviewing legal and contract documents. Plus its built-in computations and customizable field types allow me to tailor it to any business requirement. Plus it integrates seamlessly with Adobe and DocuSign for e-signatures which makes the entire contracting process paperless.

Cons

With HotDocs I have faced some limitations regarding supported formats and complex computation. I hope they make necessary changes in the near future to make it better.

High end computation features

Pros

This allows me to use templates easily and quickly generate a large volume of legal documents in no time. And the high-end computational features allows me to develop various business logic and requirements pretty easily too. Navigation from one part of the code to another is even simpler which makes the entire process pretty perfect.

Cons

At times the development testing seems to accept code that users encounter as errors once it is installed in the enterprise environment. And the recently developed author has many restrictions and does not have access to enough features that are commonly used by developers.

Has everything you need

Pros

Customization options are the best as they truly cater to my needs. like I have been involved in developing e-signatures, QR codes, image processing and more, along with document template creation and generation which has improved my workflow a lot.

Cons

While I find all the features to be excellent however the application license feels a bit overly priced compared to other options in the market. Plus the new author does have some issues that need addressing when compared to the classic version.

Could improve a little

Pros

I found this document management platform through recommendations from law students and I must it is the best choice that I have made. The cloud version is improving each passing day and I also like how easy it is to navigate. Plus a bit of exploration with the features can lead to great productivity in managing documents.

Cons

I believe HotDocs is still very much behind its competitors specifically in terms of overall presentation and cloud functions.

Great for preparing large documents

Pros

HotDocs is an invaluable tool for properly preparing legal documents related to property sales. And it includes all the necessary language in each document which saves me time. I can create legal documents that I know will be the best in just a few minutes. Also this tool helps me manage my legal practice without unnecessary stress.

Cons

There is really nothing I dislike about HotDocs. It saves me a lot of time by excellently and quickly creating legal documents which allows me to focus on other important tasks.

Poor customer service

Pros

While its marketed as user friendly, I found it a bit complex as it is not easy to navigate without some guidance. And sadly getting assistance from the developers has been difficult. In short my experience was not the best and I have nothing good to share.

Cons

The developers made a lot of effort combined with like just to convince me this is the best software but they disappeared after the purchase. Well they do not even respond to my emails. So I would not recommend it to anyone.

Low-maintenance but high quality

Pros

After I put in the effort to set everything up I come to find out that HotDocs software simplifies daily document creation and management a lot.

Cons

Honestly setting it up is quite complex as it feels like you need a BA in computer science. I feel like I would have enjoyed the process much more with just a basic understanding of coding.

Really helpful for a law office

Pros

I really like the option to create my own forms and purchase pre-made sets. Although it takes time to develop templates still it helps me clarify my goals for each document which ultimately resulting in a more effective final product.

Cons

I noticed they switched to a subscription model that feels quite pricey. The good thing is that I still have my standalone program.

Boosts efficiency

Pros

I only need to input client information once to use it across various forms. Since court forms often require the same information in different sections, this feature really streamlines the process.

Cons

I have come across 2 forms where the client information does not carry over from what was originally input. Even though it is not a major issue as of now because I am aware of it.

Great for utomated legal forms

Pros

HotDocs software offers a lot of great features and flexibility for me to customize nearly any type of form I need.

Cons

Web based version of the HotDocs is still in the early stages of development. But this should not stop you from using it. Because program has great potential and the possible improvements in efficiency and form specialty make it worth considering.

Top-quality product

Pros

Once everything is configured, I believe HotDocs stands out as one of the most customizable and helpful document assembly programs available.

Cons

Not easy to learn and is a bit costly as per my liking.

Quite expensive but useful

Pros

It saves me time and is widely used in our company. Also it makes it easy for others outside our office to understand everything.

Cons

HotDocs iss quite expensive and requires me to re-enter data I have already input far too often. I also find the coding in documents quite unclear and converting existing document structures to a HotDocs format is quite complex. The existing form sets available on HotDocs are useful and while the community is extensive, the quality can vary significantly.

Really impractical

Pros

The support is misleading as it tends to lie to clients in order to secure long-term contracts. And do not know why but this is the only aspect we liked.

Cons

It is so complicated that it is practically unusable. I once hired a programmer to help get it working when their monthly fees for the lease were not excessive.

Not easy to use

Pros

I have nothing positive to say because simply it do not work for me and I do not have the hundreds of hours needed to make this product useful.

Cons

I think its very difficult and quite complex to use. It really needs someone dedicated in-house whose job description includes creating templates.

My first choice

Pros

In my experience, HotDocs is definitely my go-to choice for preparing more complex legal documents mainly in packages. As lawyers who specialize in automating documents for other law firms in areas like loan and security documents, share sale agreements and complex wills and estates, we have not come across anything that we cannot accomplish with HotDocs. While we have explored other document automation tools mainly for simpler tasks, they just do not measure up to HotDocs at the higher end. Beyond document creation we really value the option to incorporate organizational compliance and training into the interview questionnaires.

Cons

In my opinion the biggest flaw of HotDocs is the annual per-user licensing model which limits its use in scenarios where there are many potential users who might only need it occasionally. This also discourages people from starting to use it when they are not sure how significant the benefits will be. I would really prefer a more flexible licensing model that encourages new users to try HotDocs since I believe they would quickly discover its many uses. With a more scalable licensing approach, I think many more people would adopt it. Also the ability to collaborate with others, like through client interviews would be highly beneficial. I would also like to see easier out of the box integration with other systems, especially Office 365.

Expensive but so important

Pros

I like how HotDocs simplifies the drafting process for frequently used documents like Health Care Directives and Powers of Attorney. You can input information via a template, click a button and just like that, you are all good.

Cons

User license fee is very very high. Also getting started is not as easy as I expected and often requires extra tech support.

Moving on from this one

Pros

Learning to use this product takes considerable time but its great features can be very beneficial if you are willing to invest the effort upfront to save time later.

Cons

I have been with HotDocs for a long time and probably would have continued but since they were acquired by AccessData, they changed to a new pricing model that requires a perpetual monthly fee per user which will significantly increase our costs for this product. I am currently exploring other options. But I do not have pricing or enough information yet to determine if any of these options will be more affordable and suitable for us, but I'm looking into Contract Express, XpressDox and Exari. Today, I am online researching other viable competitors.

Disappointed

Pros

I used HotDocs software for several years and invested a lot of time and effort into it. There were no subscription fees as you simply paid for the software and owned it outright. I did upgrade to HotDocs 11.

Cons

With the companys pricing changes, I was informed that I would need to purchase a new monthly per user subscription to reinstall what I already paid for on a new computer that replaced my old one.

It is too expensive

Pros

I find it easy and will surely recommend this program to anyone. And I did successfully introduced several attorneys to it. HotDocs is an excellent way to automate your documents. While it can be complex that complexity provides users with numerous options which makes it a powerful tool.

Cons

HotDocs cost is too high. I do not for what reason HotDocs has decided to raise the price this much beyond what they previously charged. From what I understand, they now want to impose a monthly fee when they used to charge just a one-time fee for the program. The price is too high for solo attorneys and small law firms. Bottom line: Until HotDocs can sort out their pricing, I would not recommend starting to use it as there are cheaper alternatives that can accomplish the same tasks and I mean a lot cheaper!
