I've been using uLaw for about seven years now, ever since I started my solo practice in Canadian immigration law. A colleague was using it and suggested I give it a try and I'm so glad I did! To be honest, I absolutely hate accounting, but I knew my practice was small enough that I could handle everything myself if I had the right tools. uLaw turned out to be exactly what I needed. It keeps things simple, without overwhelming me with too many choices or a confusing interface. I have reached out to customer service quite a few times, whether it was for tax reports, HST returns or law society compliance audits and they have always been quick to respond and incredibly helpful. Even when I don't fully know how to explain my issue, they seem to understand what I need.

Cons

Sometimes the way information fills in template forms can be a little off and invoices or receipts can take a bit longer than expected to generate or download. Not a dealbreaker but something to improve.

In theory, you could run your entire practice using just this one software.

Cons

Entering accounting data can feel a bit counterintuitive which creates some challenges. The features for bank and Outlook integration don't work as smoothly as expected, so you end up switching back and forth instead of handling everything in one place. Some extensive training is definitely needed.

Honestly I'm not a big fan of the design. It works fine but visually it could use some updates.

I'm still getting used to uLaw, so I can't say much about its full potential just yet, but I have to shout out their customer support, it's amazing. I am the kind of person who needs my hand held when it comes to tech and trust me, they are doing just that. They've been so patient and helpful while I learn the ropes.

The free CPD workshops? Absolutely love them! They're so convenient and honestly, they make the monthly price worth it. The LSO compliance features are a huge help for my startup and I really appreciate how well-organized the contact and matter management sections are. Makes staying professional so much easier. The pricing is tough for someone like me who's in the very early stages of business. I don't have many cases yet and barely make any money, so the cost feels a bit high. That said, I know it's competitive compared to other options out there.

My experience with uLaw has been nothing but positive. It has everything I need to manage my firm, case management, time tracking, billing, invoicing, you name it. The layout is super user-friendly and I can easily keep track of client details, billable hours and invoices without any hassle. Plus it integrates smoothly with other legal platforms, which saves me a ton of time. Their customer service deserves a special mention too, they're responsive, knowledgeable and always willing to help.

I struggled a bit with the learning curve. As a new user it took me a while to get comfortable with all the features. There are tutorials and guides but I would've liked a more intuitive onboarding process to speed things up.

Pros

I honestly don't know how I'd function without uLaw! I can pull up revenue reports, check profit/loss, compare financials from different periods and run compliance reports in just a few clicks. I also love that it's a Canadian product, it's much more reasonably priced than similar U.S. software. But what really makes a difference? The HUMAN customer support. So many companies these days just throw you into chatbots and FAQs, but uLaw actually has people who care and help you figure things out. There's a lot to learn when you're just starting, but they make it manageable.

It would be really helpful to have an indexed manual or clear menu paths to find things more easily.

My bookkeeper really likes how easy it is to input information, which is a huge plus for both of us.

I'm still in the process of learning the software but I definitely could've used more help setting everything up in the beginning.

The time tracking feature makes invoicing and billing so much easier. And I love the Statements of Activity, they give full transparency to clients which is so important.

The templates could use more flexibility most seem designed for multiple users, which isn't ideal for sole practitioners like me. Also, the two-step verification feels a bit off because it shows sensitive information before entering the code. A security question (like online banking) would be a better option.

A complete package for paralegals! It keeps everything in line with law society guidelines and takes a huge weight off my shoulders in case of an audit.

Honestly this software has everything. It feels like it was built specifically for legal professionals, especially paralegals. The price is fair, the tech support is outstanding and they even offer LSO-accredited CPDs for free, just that alone makes it worth the monthly fee.

It would be great if it integrated with OneNote for better workflow management.
