“SharePoint powered reporting wins”

Pros

Getting up and running with it is pretty simple when you're already working within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. It offers a very interactive way to pull in real time data from collection tools like SharePoint Online, Excel and other sources. The SharePoint connection is really the standout feature in my case. When Power BI is tied into SharePoint, it makes real time dashboards and dynamic reporting possible for smaller organizations that want current or near real time insights without taking on major upfront costs for software, training or extra staffing. Microsoft has really opened up dynamic reporting with Power BI and made it possible for even non-technical users to build polished web-based reports. My workflow is simple and effective: SharePoint handles the data collection and Power BI handles the reporting.

Cons

Most of the frustration comes from the changes Microsoft keeps introducing since every update seems to bring another learning curve for users. The biggest downside is the inconsistency in how certain actions work which can be confusing.

Pros

One thing that really works well is how multifunctional it is, along with the wide range of features that let me bring in data from many different sources which makes my data analysis process much easier.

Cons

The part I enjoy the least is that, despite having all these features, the platform can still be pretty complicated to use at times and the onboarding process feels stressful.

Pros

Lets you do a lot of real time analysis with your data making it simple to drill into specific areas and keep narrowing down the results as you go.

Cons

A lot of the features dont feel very easy to use so users often struggled to understand how to work with the reports.

Pros

Has been incredibly helpful for handling advanced workforce analytics. It connects well with our HRIS and we can have weekly or monthly HR metrics reports sent straight to the inbox. It has pretty much removed the need to keep doing routine data analysis in Excel.

Cons

Although it offers a lot of advanced features, the learning curve is definitely steep. Microsoft does run regular training sessions in several major cities and attending those was very helpful.

Pros

It gives really strong visibility into the data, it's simple to download and it connects with different CRMs which makes it useful as a database for tracking performance.

Cons

Exporting the data can sometimes be troublesome and because there are different versions available some of them don't offer the level of detail you may need.

Pros

Adding Power BI to our tech stack has been a really positive move. Being able to build visual reports and quickly export them for presentations is a really useful bonus.

Cons

Getting started can feel a bit uneven. Since the platform offers so much, building that first report can be a little overwhelming at first.

Pros

Working with this software feels very convenient because it connects well with other Microsoft tools like Power Apps, Azure and Office 365. It's really useful for day to day data visualization tasks and building dashboards with it is quite simple.

Cons

At the moment, the pricing is still far too expensive for students.

Pros

One thing it does really well is connectivity. It comes with a huge range of connectors and works very well with common databases in the traditional sense, such as SQL Server and MySQL, as well as broader business tools like JIRA and SAP.

Cons

That said, mastering it is quite difficult and the way it handles data can feel unnecessarily convoluted. It's not really something you can just start using out of the box since you need to learn how to code in it to make it do what you actually need.

Pros

This platform has been a solid analytics tool for turning complex data into clear, well structured reports. It works especially well for people who do not have much programming knowledge which makes it accessible to a wider range of users. The visualizations look really good, it connects smoothly with other Microsoft applications and installation is simple so getting started and working with it does not take much effort.

Cons

One downside is that the pricing can get a little expensive when you need to add more users. There is also a bit of a learning curve for beginners so it may feel somewhat challenging at first.

“User friendly tool”

Pros

Power BI has been a budget friendly and user friendly option for reporting. The Desktop version is available as a free download which makes it very accessible. It also connects to a wide range of data sources and the ability to add custom visuals gives reports and dashboards much more flexibility.

Cons

There is still a learning curve especially when it comes to formulas and the DAX language. Updates happen often and quite a few things can change from one release to the next. It can also become fairly expensive once you need to share content with a larger number of users.

Pros

It won me over with its interactive dashboards and working with it feels very easy. It got me to stop using Microsoft Excel for dashboard creation altogether. One feature I really appreciate is being able to pull in data from multiple sources. On top of that having a mobile version available makes it an even better option.

Cons

Its price feels a little expensive. Other than that, I really have not come across anything else to dislike about Power BI.

Pros

Working with it has been extremely efficient when it comes to pulling in data and the platform is very user friendly. The visualizations are impressive and convenient especially compared to spending hours trying to build them manually. It also stands out against similar software because the overall experience is so simple to use.

Cons

At times, it can take a while to load especially when a large amount of data is being pulled in. Aside from occasional lag and a few minor technical issues, I really haven't run into any major problems.

Pros

A business intelligence platform that connects with multiple data sources and brings everything into one dataset making it much easier to analyze, summarize and use the data for business forecasting.

Cons

Cant think of any cons.

Pros

Across a large share of our production data, this gives us clear visual dashboards that help us make adjustments and stay on track with both small and large goals.

Cons

It is on the expensive side although that's somewhat expected since it's a Microsoft product.

Pros

Covers a lot when it comes to connecting data, whether it's from internal databases, external sources or SaaS platforms through web services. It also gives you the option to set up a report server with the premium plan which adds a lot of flexibility.

Cons

Working with an Oracle client can be fairly complicated to integrate. On top of that the interface changes quite a bit between versions so it can take a while to adjust.

Pros

It really shines when it comes to data analytics and visualization. It provides highly informative dashboards and summaries which are especially useful for senior management when reviewing data. A good example is budget and expenditure monitoring, where it helps present the numbers clearly. One of its biggest strengths is the way it can summarize, transform and visualize data through reports and dashboards. It also supports real time reporting when connected directly to the data source. Another advantage is that it can be accessed on both desktop and mobile and it integrates very well with Excel and other data storage software.

Cons

There is definitely a technical side to it especially when it comes to writing DAX formulas and building relationships across multiple tables. Since it is heavily focused on dashboards and visual reporting, pages can sometimes end up feeling crowded because so much information has to fit into a single view. DAX can also be quite complex and at times the formulas may return results that are different from what was expected. On top of that preparing the data and designing the visuals can take a considerable amount of time.

“I love using it”

Pros

Switching our weekly reporting from Excel spreadsheets to Power BI felt like moving from black and white to full color. The amount of time it saves has made the upgrade completely worthwhile and the automated dashboards pulling data from APIs have given my team several hours back every week.

Cons

Getting started took a bit of effort though that was mostly because we were used to manual Excel exports and macros for basic reporting. Once the team got proper training, everyone was able to create much better reports without much trouble.

Pros

The range of visual tools it offers for presenting data is great. The dashboards look polished and attractive and they make it much simpler to understand a dataset and spot trends or relationships quickly.

Cons

The overall customization and design choices for visualizations still feel somewhat limited. It also helps a lot to already have a background in data analytics because without that knowledge the platform can be difficult to use.

Pros

One of the best parts is that it lets you pull in data directly from Excel files, create dashboards and reports and share those reports with others. Those features make it really useful for organizing and presenting data clearly.

Cons

Downside is that it takes a fairly advanced understanding of the platform to use it well and sharing reports also requires the Pro version which can be limiting.

“Live updating dashboards”

Pros

Live updating dashboards add a whole new layer to business intelligence. It also lets you build maps from the right data which is really useful for showing global presence and tracking progress visually.

Cons

Takes someone with specialized knowledge to use and understand properly and the learning curve is steeper than with some other Microsoft products. That said, it's also far more powerful so the extra complexity feels understandable.
