“Easy anti-spam management”

Pros

We use MDaemon as our anti-spam solution and it offers a wide range of options while still keeping the administration clear and well organized.

Cons

Because the system is quite complex some settings can end up affecting one another.

“flexible user self-service tools”

Pros

Getting this product up and running is simple and managing it over time is just as practical. It's very convenient on the end-user side too since users can handle many things on their own, like creating their own rules, changing passwords, setting signatures and managing forwards and automatic replies. Another strong point is that the software works well with many third-party applications.

Cons

The user interface isn't really to my taste and the base version of the software doesn't include support for some features such as shared contacts and shared calendars.

“A solid fit for PMI”

Pros

The setup is simple and the management features are handled well overall, even if there are a few limitations. It works well for small and medium-sized businesses.

Cons

It can't really compare with other tools especially when it comes to enterprise-level environments.

“reliable in-house email control”

Pros

MDaemon has been a cost-effective and dependable way to manage our critical email communications while keeping everything under our own control. Cloud hosting definitely has advantages but giving up that level of control is a major downside for us. With MDaemon, I can directly manage spam filtering, antivirus protection and routing rules to fit our needs. As long as it stays affordable and reliable, I plan to keep our email in-house with MDaemon.

Cons

I think getting started isn't especially hard but there are quite a few steps involved before everything is fully set up and implemented.

“Great admin tools”

Pros

Migration, upgrades and deployment have all been simple to handle and the same goes for user and domain management. The admin side of things works really well overall.

Cons

Because our team is based in Australia and the timezone doesn't line up, getting support quickly can be a challenge. There is a paid option with 24/7 coverage but we manage with the overnight replies and to be fair, the answers we get are really helpful.

“so hassle-free!”

Pros

It's actually good and getting started with it was simple too. The installation, configuration and even troubleshooting are all simple to handle. Overall, it's very user-friendly.

Cons

Doesn't consume many resources and runs lightweight so managing it is no trouble. Support is also available 24/7 through the distributor, Thobson.com and their team is well-trained, responsive, honest and quick to resolve client issues as a priority.

“rock-solid control and scalability”

Pros

From day one, this solution proved to be stable and highly scalable. Expanding to larger storage was simple and mailbox size was really only constrained by what Outlook PST files could handle. Hardware migrations from one machine to another were also very simple to carry out. It runs with a very small memory and CPU footprint which made it even more reliable in daily use. Version upgrades were stress-free because all settings stayed intact so there were no unpleasant surprises afterward. It also worked very well with the "previous versions" feature when restoring emails that users had permanently deleted. Another big advantage was the flexibility it gave us.. since it was hosted in-house, we had complete control over features and settings based on our business needs. Implementing SPF was especially valuable in helping protect the company against phishing. Troubleshooting was also simple because we had full access to the logs and the hardware. Downtime was rare, maybe once or twice a year and even then it usually lasted only a few minutes. Also, the cost was very reasonable, about $500 for one year of support and even after support expired, the server kept running and the data remained accessible. Even so, we still chose to renew support.

Cons

One part that never really delivered was Outlook Connector. It struggled badly when folders contained thousands of emails so I ended up going back to Outlook IMAP profile settings and PST files as a workaround. It also did not behave well with roaming profiles because some of its data was stored in the AppData Roaming folder instead of Local. Whenever sync problems came up, that could result in the Connector mail account settings being deleted.

“Easy to manage”

Pros

Between the pricing, the way it handles folders and the support for it, this software has been a really solid fit. It offers a lot of power while still being simple to manage which makes day-to-day administration much more convenient.

Cons

Spam filtering works well overall though there's still a bit of room to make it even better.

“quick setup”

Pros

Getting it implemented was pretty simple. honestly it doesn't take much effort to have it installed and running properly.

Cons

One thing I'd still want is clearer guidance around some features. There are times when the sheer number of options feels overwhelming especially for someone who only spends a few minutes a week managing a mail server and isn't constantly keeping up with newer internet mail features and RFCs.

“reliable cloud email powerhouse”

Pros

Running email services for multiple companies, we need something dependable and flexible and MDaemon has delivered on both. It's an impressively full-featured platform that fits a wide variety of real-time business needs. Our clients rely heavily on uptime and designed configurations and this product gives us the customization we need to support that. We host the services in the cloud on AWS and it works very well in that environment especially from a security and around-the-clock availability standpoint.

Cons

Some of the more advanced features involve technical complexity that end users really don't need to deal with directly. Because of that, we include a service component in our contracts and handle those parts on their behalf. It's not really a downside of the product itself but businesses deploying it will likely get the most value from it when they have the right level of IT support behind it.

“their customer support is spot-on!”

Pros

It comes with a lot of features that are genuinely useful for our organization. The biggest advantage for me is the logging. It records transactions day by day which makes it much easier to track down email delivery or acceptance problems and quite often I can identify the issue myself. That's incredibly valuable from an admin standpoint. Since not every organization has their mail server configured correctly, those logs let me pinpoint the problem and even work around it for that specific organization when needed. And on the occasions when I can't figure it out on my own, their tech support has always been able to identify the problem and guide me toward the fix.

Cons

The only downside with it is also, in a way, one of its strengths, it has a huge number of options. Because of that, it can sometimes be a little confusing trying to locate the exact setting you want to change. Thankfully, the help files usually point me in the right direction. It mostly comes up in unusual situations so it feels more like part of the software's learning curve than a real flaw. Once everything is configured and running, it's very dependable.

“supportive team!”

Pros

Installing MDaemon was completely hassle-free from start to finish. The support team even checked in with us during setup which was reassuring although we didn't end up needing any help because the whole installation process was clear and simple. It was simple to install, configure and start using, even for someone without a technical background.

Cons

The level of flexibility can feel a bit overwhelming at times. It just means you need to plan the implementation properly before getting started.

“affordable and reliable email hosting”

Pros

Using this software has been a really positive experience because it's very simple to work with and the price is only a fraction of what similar options like Exchange or O365 cost. I've been using it for years and I'd absolutely recommend it to anyone looking to run their own email server, archive and related services.

Cons

Since Outlook is still the dominant email client in most environments, it's a bit disappointing that full 100% Outlook compatibility comes as an added cost. That said, if I could get approval from the Board to allocate the budget, I definitely would.

Pros

It's been a cost-effective solution with solid stability, dependable performance and reliability overall. Also, the support team has been helpful whenever there's an issue to sort out.

“Solid spam controls!”

Pros

After running its Email Server around the clock since 2001, starting back with version 5.x, I've been able to see how much it has evolved. Alt-N keeps refining the product, rolling out useful new features as technology changes and addressing problems whenever they come up or get reported. The spam filtering options are outstanding, the mailing lists are simple for other people to manage on their own without needing me involved and the webmail has been consistently dependable.

Cons

Honestly there's hardly anything here to complain about. Over the years, Alt-N has added the features that matter to me so it's been hard to find much to dislike.
