“Appreciate the inventory system”

Pros

The inventory system has completely changed things for our lab group and the electronic lab book has made it much simpler to present my data to my supervisor.

Cons

Getting comfortable with the system does take some time since it isn't immediately user-friendly.

“Helpful for sharing information in real time”

Pros

It's helpful for sharing information in real time across different sites which matters a lot when teams are spread across different cities and still need access to the same data. Adding collaborators is very user-friendly and working together on a protocol or experiment goes quite well. It's also excellent for record keeping and I really appreciate that deleted information or vials can still be recovered when needed.

Cons

Using it does take some patience because of the ongoing updates and occasional glitches. At this point, refreshing the page has basically become part of my normal workflow in the ELN. It also isn't very flexible so I'd strongly suggest creating the protocol or experiment in another format first and then importing it into the platform. That approach saves time and avoids frustration. You also have to remember to save before moving between steps or sections, even within the same experiment. On top of that, there are still limitations when it comes to organizing an experiment.

“Template features save time”

Pros

Overall, the software is simple to use and being able to follow cell history across experiments is really useful. The template features also help save time and keep applications more consistent.

Cons

It could really use better integration with other software. Excel regularly fails to calculate my formulas which is frustrating. Inventory access should also be more convenient, with a simpler way to add or remove items from checked-out locations.

“Customizable software”

Pros

Using it has been really convenient for keeping my experiment records organized and I can tailor it to fit the way I work. Since it's cloud-based, I'm able to check my experiment history and also look at my coworkers' records right from the benchtop or tissue culture room instead of going back to my desk or asking someone. That saves a lot of time and helps me follow records more accurately while cutting down on mistakes.

Cons

Still has a few limitations when it comes to adding raw data files especially things like Excel files or sequencing output.

“valuable templates”

Pros

Template creation and the ability to quickly reuse and refine the protocols we rely on in the lab have been incredibly valuable and will remain a big part of how we operate across both of our sites.

Cons

Adoption of the protocols feature in eLab has been a bit slow, largely because building a protocol from scratch there can feel complex especially when it comes to formatting. A better workaround has been to draft the outline first in a third-party tool like Microsoft Word, then use the import feature to create a protocol skeleton quickly before customizing and fine-tuning it for the user. The absence of a spell-check tool is another reason outside platforms are more effective for creating clean, error-free templates.

“Necessary for sample tracking”

Pros

Between the integration and the way it connects samples to experiments by lineage, this has become a key part of my day-to-day workflow. The interface feels very user-friendly and whenever we've needed help with more advanced projects, the customer support has been outstanding.

Cons

One improvement that would be helpful is the ability to import reagent information directly from vendor websites.
