“Permissions enable field teams to use live data”

Once the right permissions are in place, ArcGIS lets our crews work with valuable data in real time which has been a big advantage for us.

Cons

At times, the software feels a bit sluggish. Simple tasks can seem more complicated than they really need to be in ArcGIS.

Pros

Few platforms handle enterprise GIS work at this level. I manage a massive geodatabase covering boreholes, catchments and monitoring stations and the versioned editing setup allows the team to work at the same time without colliding with one another's changes. Topology rules also flag messy digitising right away. It's impressive how the system brings rasters, vectors and lidar into one project without constant format problems. The client-facing side has become a real advantage for us as well. Rather than sending around huge PDF reports, I can publish a live web map or dashboard through ArcGIS Online. Regulators and stakeholders are able to switch layers on and off, check borehole attributes and print what they need themselves, all without any GIS background. In the field, crews can still collect data offline with Field Maps in remote parts of Malawi and sync later although the live interactive dashboards are the part that really helps us stand out when competing for work. Security has also been very dependable when configured correctly. In ArcGIS Enterprise, I can apply role-based access, HTTPS and detailed sharing permissions. On the desktop side, OS-level file permissions are simple enough to manage on consultancy laptops. I've never had a data breach and once everything is set up properly, the data remains well protected. The analytical side is another major strength. Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst give me terrain modelling, watershed delineation and flood simulation capabilities that lighter tools just cannot match. When I combine that with arcpy scripting, I can string together long geoprocessing workflows and let them run overnight. That kind of automation is not just helpful when deadlines pile up it's absolutely essential.

Cons

Cost is easily the biggest frustration. The base licence is already expensive and then the extensions that matter most, Spatial Analyst, 3D, Geostatistical and others, each come with their own extra cost. The named-user subscription setup feels restrictive too because once you stop paying, you lose access to both the tools and your stored projects. For a small consultancy in Malawi, the full yearly cost leads to some very difficult budget decisions. Support is knowledgeable but the response time can be painfully slow. Esri's analysts clearly understand the product and they have helped me through arcpy and server problems before yet the time-zone gap turns what should be a quick issue into a long email exchange over several days. Without a nearby Esri office in Malawi, I usually end up finding the answer myself through Esri Community or Stack Exchange before official support gets back to me. Stability problems are just part of day-to-day life with it. ArcGIS Pro can freeze if I move around a heavy 3D scene too quickly. Some geoprocessing tools finish without errors yet still return empty outputs and no warning at all. On top of that, licensing checks sometimes fail for no clear reason and force me to sign out and back in at the worst possible moment. Every update seems to fix some issues while introducing others so I've learned to stay at least one subversion behind if I want to avoid unnecessary stress.

“Real-time updates”

Pros

Being able to build utility maps quickly from GIS data is a huge advantage. It also performs really well for updating maps in real time on an electronic notebook while working out in the field.

Cons

Since it's an Esri product, the price is definitely on the high side but that comes with getting one of the best GIS platforms in the industry.

“Data imports into other tools are simple”

Pros

I was able to work with data across multiple platforms which was a big plus. Importing data into the other tools we use is also very direct which makes the whole process much more convenient.

Cons

I have noticed that sometimes, the software can feel a bit janky. It also comes across like it was built more with data analysts in mind than the people who actually use it day to day.

“Bugs appear now and then but get resolved”

Pros

This has evolved a lot over time and now brings mobile workflows and data entry into the mix making it possible to support an enterprise-wide solution.

Cons

At times, minor bugs and technical issues can slow operations down but once those get resolved, everything goes back to working as expected.

“Advanced licenses cost about three times more”

Pros

There's a huge amount of online documentation available which makes it much easier to complete geospatial analysis. The bugs are also thoroughly documented and available workarounds help users keep moving without too much disruption.

Cons

The licensing tiers are frustrating to deal with. Most work can be done with a basic license but when a specific tool needs extra licensing, the software has to be restarted which adds about a 10-minute delay. Using an advanced license every day also ends up costing roughly three times as much.

“Some county functions load very slowly”

Pros

Using this out in the field completely changes the way we manage facilities. Without it, handling facility management would be a nightmare.

Cons

Not having an offline mode makes things tough in places where our facilities have limited connectivity. On top of that some of the add-in county functions can be slow to load or struggle to come up at all.

Pros

The platform, ArcGIS is a key part of how we operate. We rely on it to build maps and those maps can then be connected to other software through the API or published as standalone web apps. It really feels like the industry standard for this kind of work.

Cons

It does require having someone on staff who can focus on managing and maintaining the ArcGIS organization. There's definitely a learning curve involved as well.

“Great for mapping”

Pros

Comes with a very clear interface, strong mapping capabilities and excellent data visualization tools that work really well for professionals.

Cons

The learning curve can still feel pretty steep at times especially depending on how your data is structured and the kind of visualization you want to create which can make it tough for beginners.

Pros

This honestly, has been a really powerful tool for spatial analysis. Its analysis features make complex work much more manageable and the platform produces detailed, high-quality map visualizations.

Cons

ArcGIS is definitely pricey although for a large company like ours the cost is still manageable. There's also a fairly steep learning curve so it takes a while to become comfortable using it.

Pros

It offers a wide range of capabilities and connects with plenty of other software which makes it very versatile.

Cons

There are occasional unexpected errors that can crash the entire program and some parts of the interface are not very easy to use.

Getting around the software is pretty speedy overall. One of the parts I appreciate most is how simple it is to modify features which can be a tedious process in a lot of other open-source tools.

Cons

Some tools require purchasing a license before you can use them. It's also fairly common to run into lag when working with raster data and the customer support for this product could definitely be better.

Pros

There's a huge selection of mapping and analytical tools and it works well for people with all kinds of skill levels.

Cons

Their Pro-version especially the desktop app, can take quite a while to learn because the learning curve is pretty steep.

Right out of the gate, this feels like the industry standard for geospatial work. The platform is incredibly broad in what it covers and can handle just about anything you need in that space. There's a lot of complex logic behind the scenes but it still does an excellent job of making advanced data manipulation feel approachable for both experts and less technical users.

Cons

One of the cons is the price especially if you need a full license with the wider range of features. It comes with a pretty substantial cost. That said, you generally get what you pay for and although open-source options exist, they still don't offer the same level of completeness or overall value in one package.

Pros

Adding layers and pulling in maps from online sources is pretty user-friendly.

Cons

A downside is that it runs slowly on Windows. It's especially noticeable after a map loads since zooming in or out takes a while.

Once you add the extra modules, GIS can handle just about anything you need it to do.

Cons

It's unfortunate that the desktop version is still limited to x86. If you need x64, you have to move to the Pro version which feels quite different.

“Clean visuals aid both interior and exterior planning”

Pros

Right away, this felt very accessible to work with. It's especially useful for both interior and exterior planning and it does an excellent job of storing data and documents in one place. Another big plus is how clean and polished the drawings look which makes them very practical for stakeholders to review and use.

Cons

Getting everything assembled at the beginning does take time and can be pretty labor-intensive. Once the core drawings are finished though, maintaining the site becomes fairly direct. I'd recommend bringing in an AE firm to help with the initial setup since doing it alone came with a fairly steep learning curve for me.

“Great for urban planning”

Pros

A tough platform for building maps and working through data analysis. It scales very well and it gives users the ability to produce impressive cartography for urban and city planning projects.

Cons

Starting up can be a bit challenging especially for new users who are still trying to understand the platform and how its layers work.
