Pros

Few platforms handle enterprise GIS work at this level. I manage a massive geodatabase covering boreholes, catchments and monitoring stations and the versioned editing setup allows the team to work at the same time without colliding with one another's changes. Topology rules also flag messy digitising right away. It's impressive how the system brings rasters, vectors and lidar into one project without constant format problems. The client-facing side has become a real advantage for us as well. Rather than sending around huge PDF reports, I can publish a live web map or dashboard through ArcGIS Online. Regulators and stakeholders are able to switch layers on and off, check borehole attributes and print what they need themselves, all without any GIS background. In the field, crews can still collect data offline with Field Maps in remote parts of Malawi and sync later although the live interactive dashboards are the part that really helps us stand out when competing for work. Security has also been very dependable when configured correctly. In ArcGIS Enterprise, I can apply role-based access, HTTPS and detailed sharing permissions. On the desktop side, OS-level file permissions are simple enough to manage on consultancy laptops. I've never had a data breach and once everything is set up properly, the data remains well protected. The analytical side is another major strength. Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst give me terrain modelling, watershed delineation and flood simulation capabilities that lighter tools just cannot match. When I combine that with arcpy scripting, I can string together long geoprocessing workflows and let them run overnight. That kind of automation is not just helpful when deadlines pile up it's absolutely essential.

Cons

Cost is easily the biggest frustration. The base licence is already expensive and then the extensions that matter most, Spatial Analyst, 3D, Geostatistical and others, each come with their own extra cost. The named-user subscription setup feels restrictive too because once you stop paying, you lose access to both the tools and your stored projects. For a small consultancy in Malawi, the full yearly cost leads to some very difficult budget decisions. Support is knowledgeable but the response time can be painfully slow. Esri's analysts clearly understand the product and they have helped me through arcpy and server problems before yet the time-zone gap turns what should be a quick issue into a long email exchange over several days. Without a nearby Esri office in Malawi, I usually end up finding the answer myself through Esri Community or Stack Exchange before official support gets back to me. Stability problems are just part of day-to-day life with it. ArcGIS Pro can freeze if I move around a heavy 3D scene too quickly. Some geoprocessing tools finish without errors yet still return empty outputs and no warning at all. On top of that, licensing checks sometimes fail for no clear reason and force me to sign out and back in at the worst possible moment. Every update seems to fix some issues while introducing others so I've learned to stay at least one subversion behind if I want to avoid unnecessary stress.

Being able to build utility maps quickly from GIS data is a huge advantage. It also performs really well for updating maps in real time on an electronic notebook while working out in the field.
