server support dropped and useless

Pros

This product has gone completely downhill over the last few years. The moment they stopped supporting their server products it became useless for any real business. I wouldn't trust it now.

Cons

After the company made some recent changes I can't back up my servers anymore. Now I'm stuck hunting for a completely different product to replace them.

self-hosted with free storage

Pros

I used to run the self hosted option with CrashPlan and loved not having to pay extra for cloud storage. That was a sweet setup while it lasted.

Cons

Back when I first signed up there weren't many choices out there. And even then all I could really do was back up files and folders. Nothing fancy.

can't change plan online, trapped by admin problem

Pros

Look I've been on this thing for years and it used to be perfectly fine. But now? Something changed and not for the better.

Cons

They hit me up to update my payment method. I figured instead of just updating it, I'd switch to a different plan that made more sense for me. Well you can't do that online apparently. So I opened a ticket, sent email after email asking someone to help me change my plan. Nothing happened except getting a million emails threatening to delete my account if I didn't update my payment info. So now I'm completely stuck because of some stupid admin issue and it's looking like I'm about to lose every single piece of data I have stored with them.

Software is a waste of your time

Pros

The only reason I even looked at this software was the price and the features they advertise. That's what got me in the door.

Cons

This thing is so ridiculously confusing it's basically unusable. I paid for CrashPlan Pro and couldn't even get it installed. I practically begged someone to help me get it running and got absolutely nowhere. Then there's the trial thing. I signed up for 14 days, went to where it says "Change My Plan" because I wanted to cancel and the only option they showed me was to pay more for a fancier plan. Way, way down at the very bottom of the page in text so small you'd miss it, there was a link that said "need to cancel." I clicked it and they forced me to pick from a list of nice things to say about the software before they'd let me out. Let me be clear, this software is complete garbage.

simple background backups with easy restores

Pros

Getting it running was dead simple. It just sits there doing constant backups in the background without me thinking about it. When I need to pull something back, it's easy. The reporting tells me what I need to know and the retention works the way it should.

Cons

If it actually worked with NAS devices that would be amazing. But it doesn't.

Huge help in making backups obvious for users

Pros

CrashPlan has been a huge help in making things obvious for our users. They can actually see their backup history clearly and understand what's going on. It's helped us catch problems before they turned into real disasters. Compared to years past we've lost almost no data.

Cons

It's not free obviously. Haha. But seriously if you're going to use this actually read their documentation first. Like really read it. It'll save you headaches when you're trying to set it up on every device during imaging.

pretty much no manual work!!

Pros

I literally do nothing. The backups just happen automatically and I don't have to think about any of it.

Cons

Nothing yet. I just started using it so haven't run into problems.

impossible to deal with

Pros

Nothing good to say anymore. Used to be great, now their support is so embarrassingly bad I genuinely don't understand how they're still in business.

Cons

I'm not what you'd call a computer person. But the guy I pay who is, he finds CrashPlan absolutely impossible to deal with. For months and months we did everything they suggested. Now they're telling me I have to personally authorize my expert to talk to them directly. And they're charging me twice what I used to pay because we can't resolve whatever the issue is. You never get the same person twice. They don't even create a ticket for your problem. I would never in a million years recommend this company to anyone.

would never recommend!!!

Pros

CrashPlan is easy to get going. I'll give it that. But that's literally the only good thing. The actual software is terrible. It eats up way too many resources on my machine and they built it in Java so it runs everywhere which sounds nice until you realize that's its only selling point. Beyond that there's nothing here worth sticking around for.

Cons

Here's the real kicker. When I tried to restore my backups I couldn't. Every single one was corrupt. Years of data just gone.
