Great platform with polished reports

Pros

Has been a pleasant experience because the platform is very easy to figure out and use. The instructions built into the pages are clear and simple to follow and the reports it generates are presented in a very polished way. I also appreciate the ongoing customer support whether through training sessions email updates or other guidance they continue to provide.

Cons

It would be even better if there were more scenarios covering the different tax issues that can arise since the current range of situations feels somewhat limited. There are also times when the required client responses may not be available which can make things more challenging.

A powerful research tool

Pros

It has been a really powerful research tool for me when working through case law and precedent-based tax issues. It gives a confidence percentage that helps me judge how likely a court is to rule a certain way which makes it much easier to prioritize where I need to spend more research time. Another thing I appreciate is being able to adjust the factors and see the confidence level go up or down based on those changes. The platform also does a nice job separating results into "Similar Cases" and "References" so I can quickly review factually comparable cases along with the key authorities commonly cited in judgments. Overall it has made my research process more efficient and given me a stronger level of confidence in my analysis.

Cons

The classifiers currently available cover many of the most commonly searched and requested areas but there are still quite a few topics that Tax Foresight does not include yet. That said I expect the topic coverage to expand over time as more users adopt the platform and continue providing recommendations.

helpful walkthroughs limited tax coverage

Pros

Something this software does well is guide you through the questions that actually matter for a specific issue and it lets you adjust your answers to see how the outcome changes. It's also very good at bringing up the jurisprudence that most closely matches your fact pattern.

Cons

The limitation is that there just aren't many situations where I can actually use it because the number of classifiers is still small compared with the range of questions a tax professional needs to answer. That's not really something the company can fully solve, it's more a limitation of what machine learning can do in this area and that creates two separate problems. First, machine learning needs a very large body of source material to be accurate and in Canada there simply isn't enough jurisprudence available. Also Tax legislation changes frequently so the model can't rely too heavily on older cases which shrinks the usable pool even more. Second, machine learning still depends on people to classify the questions and answers in the first place. If the human trainer decides that certain issues are usually determinative that's what the algorithm will learn. The result is that it can miss edge cases which is understandable but those are often exactly the situations where practitioners need the most support. If a residency issue is easy the tool will likely handle it fine but a practitioner probably doesn't need much help in that scenario anyway.

fast tax research

Pros

Using this software feels very easy and being able to cross reference the results with actual court cases is a big plus. It helps speed up the research process quite a bit and lets you work through a large amount of research in less time.

Cons

I'd still like to see the tool cover a broader range of research topics than it currently does.

Detailed legal insights

Pros

One of the best parts is that the final predictive outcome analysis comes with a thorough legal breakdown including the underlying precedents, relevant cases on point and more all presented in a clear format that's simple to figure out.

Cons

At this point it's limited to Canadian lawalthough I know there are plans to expand into U.S. federal law later on.
