4.0

valuable legal research companion

Pros

Lexis Advance gives me access to cases and opinions that I cannot find on Westlaw which makes it an essential companion to use alongside Westlaw.

Cons

That said the interface isn't as clean or as user-friendly as Westlaw and the tools for narrowing search results aren't as useful as the ones Westlaw provides.

powerful database

Pros

The search tools rely on familiar Boolean terms and connectors which makes researching feel natural. The databases are extensive and companion tools like StateNet are among the best available.

Cons

Becauseitkeeps adding new innovations some features are so complex that they are not immediately obvious and can end up being overlooked.

Modern research powerhouse

Pros

Using Lexis Advance has been a really positive experience because the interface feels user-friendly and up to date. it has a modern design that helps me move through research much faster and get things done more efficiently.

Cons

There are so many tools available thatit's hard to tell which one fits the specific research task I am working on. That said their reps are very helpful and do an excellent job explaining whatever I need.

helpful case search tools

Pros

Finding cases that support my position is very easy with Lexis Advance which is something I really appreciate.

Cons

That said the range of research options can feel a bit limited at times when compared with Westlaw.

up-to-date case law info

Pros

Having access to current case law and being able to track how later courts have applied that same reasoning is incredibly valuable. Lexis gives me a level of confidence in my client matters that I really would not have otherwise. it also helps me move settlement negotiations along faster and anytime I can save that kind of time, I feel satisfied regardless of the final settlement amount.

Cons

Cost is definitely on the high side. You really need to bring in clients every month to feel like you are getting full value fromit. Still, I often end up reading cases from other courts just out of personal interest and to build my own knowledge which makes the price a lot less frustrating thanitmight otherwise be.

Pros

There is a lot to like but one thing I like most is Shepardizing.

Cons

The part I am not happy with is the cost ofit especially the billing.

Powerful database for quick mailings

Pros

One thing that really stood out was how powerful the database was. Sending letters was almost effortless and could be done with more or less the push of a button.

Cons

At the time we were usingit, itdidn't offer cloud support which was a noticeable limitation.

helpful lookup and business details

Pros

Having phone number lookups, current and past addresses, relatives and associated people, plus business registration information all in one place makes this tool really useful.

Cons

Search results can get cluttered and a bit confusing when multiple people appear so narrowing them down with filters is pretty much required. The philanthropic search data also isn't as current or as complete as some other platforms.

Very capable platform

Pros

Lexis Advance strikes a nice balance between being simple to use and still very capable. So I'd choose it over most other legal research tools.

Cons

At times, itstill comes across as a bit buggy and the navigation could definitely be more user friendly.

fast search that delivers

Pros

Getting around the software is easy and the search engine performs very well. The natural language search works well, usually brings up results fast and refining or narrowing down the results is simple.

Cons

When compared with similar programs, this onecosts more anditdoesn't really offer enough added value to justify the higher price.

Flexible search options

Pros

One thing I really appreciate is the variety of search options available. Being able to move between possible relatives is also very helpful when I am trying to track someone down.

Cons

The only downside is that searches can return far too many results at once. I'd rather see a more limited and focused set of responses.

Pros

Getting started with this program was very easy and using it day to day felt simple and user friendly.

Cons

Price was high anditcame with more functionality than our firm actually needed for the kind of law we practice.

mixed value in case overruling

Pros

One thing Lexis Advance does really well is identifying cases that overrule parts of a decision.

Cons

At the same time, itseems to put almost too much focus on overruling cases. I ended up spending a lot of time digging through them, only to realize many were overruling some other minor or insignificant point.

Top-tier legal research tools

Pros

Lexis Advance feels like an amazing, well-established platform from a company that has been doing this for a long time. it's a very good, top-tier product overall and it's clear Lexis keeps working on new tools and products to support legal research.

Cons

One thing to watch closely is the sales side ofit.it's really important to read all the fine print and be realistic about your future income.itoften starts you off with a heavily discounted rate for the first year or two but after that the monthly cost can jump quite a bit. If you're confident you'll be able to afforditlong term, that may not be as big of a concern. Even so,itstill feels expensive for what you actually end up using similar to a phone plan with a lot of extra features that sound nice but mostly go unused.

Detailed legal research library

Pros

After using Lexis Advance for many years, I really appreciated the browser-style search experience. it did an excellent job with deep research and the interface was user friendly. The basic search subscription was priced somewhere in the middle and for a lot of legal work it was simple to assign charges to specific clients for reimbursement. The depth of the search was one of its biggest strengths and the library available to search was unmatched. it's an excellent option for a large firm that can handle the overhead. it also included some very useful brief-drafting features and Shepard's was easy to use.

Cons

For the amount of searching I was actually doing, the cost ended up being too high. Downloads and printing is also not easy at the time. I also had to pay extra for specialty libraries even though I could sometimes find some of that same material for free with a basic Google search.

Positive review !

Pros

Whenever I start researching a legal issue, Lexis Advance is usually the first place I go because I know I can count on it to pull up the case law, statutes and public records I need. The interface is very user-friendly which makes the whole process much faster. it saves me a ton of time when I am trying to find relevant legal information at the start of a project.

Cons

The biggest downside is the cost. As a law student, I had free access but now that I am paying foritmyself as a solo practitioner, the price feels pretty steep. Even so,it's such an essential research tool that I still end up paying forit.

user friendly search upgrade

Pros

Right away, the redesigned search bar seems very user-friendly. it takes a lot of the stress out of starting a research project and makes the whole process feel much more approachable.

Cons

At first adjusting to the updated platform layout was a little challenging since the interface had stayed the same for such a long time. After spending some time withit though, the new version is actually much easier to navigate than the old one.
