trusted choice for development

Pros

It's one of the most widely used and dependable tools in the development world which is exactly why I trust using it.

Cons

There really isn't anything specific that I dislike about this software.

handy project sharing hub

Pros

This tool lets you store your project ideas and share them with others which is really helpful when you need to pass along information or collaborate.

Cons

A few features, like copying or downloading code, aren't as visible as they could be and would be better if they were easier to locate.

Collaboration made easy

Pros

Really deepened my interest in open-source work after using this software.. My team and I can contribute to open-source projects without any hassle and it also gives us one place to keep everything tied to our company's software projects, including source code and documentation. The markdown editor is very helpful for formatting content and the branching feature lets multiple team members work on the same project at the same time. Also, Github Pages makes it possible to host individual product websites as well. All in all, it's the go-to platform for any software publisher.

Cons

When it comes to software development features, Github feels almost complete. That said it would still be nice to see a few more add-on capabilities in the future. The interface could also be refined a bit so professional users can take fuller advantage of everything the platform offers.

Great repos and actions

Pros

This software has been excellent for keeping all of our project repositories in one place and it works really well for managing issues, pull requests and GitHub Actions. We rely on GH Actions every day for all kinds of jobs, from PR-related workflows to scheduled cron tasks.

Cons

At this point, I haven't run into anything negative with GitHub.

easy to use

Pros

It feels simple to use and being the biggest platform in this space really helps. Working with other users is very convenient and it makes online development much more manageable.

Cons

A few limits in the free plan can be a bit frustrating, like not being able to use private GitHub Pages repositories under an organization. That said it's generally not a major issue and doesn't bother me much.

tons of resources

Pros

With so many open-source projects being managed on the platform, there's a huge amount of resources available to explore and learn from. It also does a really good job of helping you document your work and present it clearly.

Cons

I haven't run into any major issues with GitHub though I do think the security around private repositories could be improved.

Excellent collaborations

Pros

Having GitHub Desktop on Mac has been a big plus since it makes committing code to GitHub projects much more convenient. The platform is also very user-friendly when it comes to commenting on code and discussing other parts of a project which really helps the team collaborate and work through problems in the code together. Also, being able to create issues and rank them by importance improves the workflow a lot because it lets us focus on the highest-priority tasks first and then circle back to smaller bugs later.

Cons

A downside is that the full system takes some time to understand. Beginners may feel a little overwhelmed at first but once they get familiar with how everything works, it becomes a very effective environment for development. More than anything, it just comes with a fairly steep learning curve.

Helpful integrations

Pros

One of the best parts of it is that it's free and lets you create as many repositories as you need. The platform is simple to work with and you can use it through the web interface, desktop app or command line depending on what fits your workflow. It also connects with plenty of other tools, like Slack which can help teams move faster and keep business processes more efficient.

Cons

That said dealing with merge conflicts in the web interface is pretty confusing and someone without much experience would probably have a hard time figuring out the right next step.

strong ci/cd

Pros

It stands out to me for how transparent everything feels and how good the overall user experience is. The CI/CD features also work really well.

Cons

Something that could be better is pull request customization. I also miss having an option to approve comments something along the lines of saying, "I agree and I'm already working on it."

Version history really helps

Pros

Working with others is really simple in this software. It lets you manage source code versioning well and gives you complete visibility into the full history of changes.

Cons

There's nothing I dislike about GitHub. It feels secure and is very simple to use.

copilot transformed our workflow

Pros

All the standard Git capabilities are consistently excellent and some of the standout additions like GitHub Copilot are genuinely impressive. For our team, Copilot has been a game-changing feature because it has noticeably cut down the time we spend coding.

Cons

At the beginning the interface was a bit tricky to figure out and it took some time to locate where everything was on the first use. After getting familiar with it though, navigating the platform became much more natural.

Great multi-repo collaboration

Pros

Having multiple repositories and different project types together in one solution is a really valuable feature. Helpful technical support is another plus. Being able to share code and keep track of changes also makes collaboration much more effective.

Cons

It isn't very user-friendly and does require some technical knowledge to use comfortably. Handling merge conflicts directly through the GitHub web interface is also difficult.

A must-have for developers

Pros

Github feels like a sixth sense that every developer eventually has to build. Once you really understand how to create branches, make commits and publish versions, you've mastered a fundamental part of the developer journey.

Cons

Trying to learn it on my own was pretty confusing and I kept feeling lost. I only really understood it once I took courses that required using GitHub. I'm sure documentation exists but it often felt like everyone else already knew the topic and I had shown up late to the conversation.

student-friendly collaboration perks

Pros

The collaborative features are really useful and the free access for students is a big advantage. Also, the extra benefits that come through GitHub's software partnerships add even more value for students.

Cons

There's not much to complain about with GitHub since the service works the way it's supposed to. The only thing that can be a bit challenging is that newer developers may struggle at first when trying to get used to advanced features like merging code and related tools.

flexible pipelines

Pros

Prefect lets an administrator take existing code and turn it into a powerful distributed pipeline without forcing a full rebuild. You can continue using your current tools, languages, infrastructure and scripts which makes adoption much easier. It creates a rich DAG structure in a way that supports good engineering practices instead of getting in the way. The functional API makes it possible to adapt scripts with very little friction and you can also access the underlying computational graph directly or mix both approaches depending on what you need.

Cons

It's a very capable tool but getting the setup right can be more complicated than with some similar products.

top choice for source control

Pros

This software is still the most widely used source control management platform out there right now. It has a full set of features, runs reliably and doesn't require any on-premise hosting. Also, it remains the biggest hub for open-source communities anywhere on the web.

Cons

One thing worth noting is that GitHub Actions arrived later than Bitbucket Pipelines and Microsoft's acquisition initially made a lot of users uneasy. Even so, after all these years, it continues to be an excellent product so neither of those feels like a real reason for concern anymore.
