“github is basically essential”
Pros
Pretty much every developer or software company has used it at some point and these days it's hard to imagine working in software development without it. Even if someone eventually moved to another platform, almost everyone has gone through GitHub first.
Cons
The problem is that when it goes down, everything turns into chaos and there's really no proper workaround. Sure, a few things can still be handled locally with Git but it's just not the same :).

“impressive features”
Pros
Interface is strong and the forking feature is especially impressive. The sync option for pulling updates from the parent project is a standout and works really well.
Cons
A few features aren't the most convenient to work with and there are times when it's not very clear how they're supposed to be used.
