Great tool for everyone

Pros

Back when I was a second-year student, I signed up for Github Pro and had a really positive experience with the platform. It helped a lot when I launched my domain and website for the first time and wanted to share my project with the world.

Cons

Although it's very useful for students and even gives them free premium access at first, the cost becomes quite expensive for students once the Pro subscription expires.

collaboration that solves bugs

Pros

Being able to share with other developers really helps when it comes to identifying and fixing problems or bugs. Exchanging ideas and comparing approaches with others is a big advantage.

Cons

I don't have any real drawbacks to report although you do need to understand this way of working before you can use it effectively.

Version control stands out

Pros

Working with several developers in the same repository is very practical since everyone can make changes and merge their contributions quickly without much friction. It also offers a strong version control system which makes it possible to keep a complete history of every change made throughout the project.

Cons

If repositories are public on Github, privacy and security need extra attention. It's necessary to apply additional safeguards to protect sensitive information and reduce the risk of vulnerabilities.

open source and accessible

Pros

The open source community is a big plus and deployment is simple. It's easy to access and I can keep all my code organized in repositories. I also appreciate the developer events they host from time to time.

Cons

A few features are still missing and pull requests can take a long time to get through.

Incredible usability

Pros

Across the industry, this is still the go-to and most recognized version control solution. There's always a tutorial available for whatever you need to do, whether it's basic setup or more advanced workflows because practically everyone has used it at some point and understands how important it is. It also works well with most technologies and web applications. With just a few CLI commands and simple but powerful config files, you can have a full CI/CD pipeline running in no time. Overall, it's an outstanding choice.

Cons

Getting started can feel a bit intimidating specially for non-technical users. At first, it may seem like it's written in a completely different language because the onboarding doesn't do much to explain the structure, purpose or level of abstraction clearly. Some initial guidance is usually needed but once you get past the learning curve, it becomes much easier to understand and work with.

fast release management

Pros

Using it together with TortoiseGit gives us a platform to manage software releases quickly. Creating branches from the main release stream is also very simple.

Cons

At times, releasing portions of code fails and the reason isn't clear. It also takes strong training to learn how to use it properly which means a noticeable time investment.

top choice for collaboration

Pros

It has been one of the best tools for improving efficiency and teamwork in software development. Its version control system is very powerful and works almost flawlessly which makes managing code much more reliable. Another major advantage is the massive Github community which adds a lot of value.

Cons

If you're just getting started with Github, the initial learning curve can feel pretty challenging.

It keeps everything aligned

Pros

Since everyone on the development team already works in it, keeping track of bugs and issues was very simple. The developers were using it for source code management anyway so we didn't need to bring in another tool just for project management and issue tracking.

Cons

I feel it's pretty basic and doesn't include all the advanced capabilities you'd get from a dedicated project management platform but it still handles everything we need.

Its dependable

Pros

The cost is hard to beat and for small projects it's even free. If all you need is strong version management, this gets the job done without hassle. And if you want to do more, you can dive further into Actions and CI features.

Cons

Getting Github Actions configured can take a little time at first. If you're running CI and pushing a lot of commits, it may make more sense to disable it or limit it to pull requests only.

feature-packed with useful deployment

Pros

There are plenty of free features available and the platform comes packed with functionality. Being able to deploy projects through Github Pages is especially valuable and works really well.

Cons

Offers good collaboration

Pros

One of its biggest strengths is its strong version control system which makes collaboration between developers feel much more efficient. Users also appreciate the large community around it, the built-in issue tracking and the flexible workflow management options. Altogether, it remains a preferred platform for software development projects, whether the team is small or working at a much larger scale.

Cons

A few downsides come up with it as well specially the interface feeling complicated for beginners. There can also be performance slowdowns during busy usage periods and the project management tools within the platform could be more organized. Also some organizations with bigger teams or more specific feature needs have raised concerns about the pricing structure.

friendly interface for teamwork

Pros

Right away, the interface feels simple and approachable, exactly what you'd expect from one of the top platforms in collaborative software development. It really helps developers work together thanks to its tools for version control, project management and code review.

Cons

It works very well for small to mid-sized projects. That said, once you get into very large projects with lots of developers contributing at the same time, it tends to be less efficient. Managing conflicts, coordinating teams and handling scalability become much bigger challenges in those cases.

saves time

Pros

Its so simple to work together on code updates, publish releases and run automation scripts with it. The interface feels quick and they keep refining it which makes getting to the repository or even a specific file fast and efficient.

Cons

My biggest frustration with it is the billing setup. You have to purchase a fixed number of seats and increases only happen in blocks of 10. That means even if you only need one additional user, you still end up paying for 10. Also, getting the extra licenses added can take 2-3 days and sometimes even longer. I honestly do not understand why it works that way. I would much rather see a usage-based billing model.
