jira integration made it worth it

Pros

After switching from another tool a couple of years ago, there was definitely a bit to learn at the beginning. But once we had been using it for a few months, it became very simple and we kept wondering why we had not made the move sooner. One of the biggest advantages has been how well it connects with other tools. For example, integrating it with Jira was smooth.

Cons

It causes trouble is when checking in a file and a conflict comes up. That part can be confusing and at times it is not clear what the next step should be. It would be better if this process were made simpler.

Good integrations

Pros

It connects well with a range of development tools. Git itself can feel a bit confusing at first but once you get the hang of how it works, the effort definitely pays off.

Cons

The free entry-level plan can be a concern because it may leave your code visible to others. That's not ideal at all when you're building a commercial application.

made our workflow better

Pros

Watching our development work move forward through it has been really valuable. It gives us clear visibility into project progress and makes it much easier to stay on top of bugs, issues, errors and user-reported complaints.

Cons

There's a bit of a learning curve for non-technical users but it's still something they can pick up over time.

Works well

Pros

It has been fantastic for me. It works both as a huge code repository and almost like a CV at the same time which helps a lot when looking for job opportunities. I can also share the source code of my projects with other people very quickly and clearly. The integrated development environment is another really valuable feature especially when working as part of a team.

Cons

I barely have any complaints. I don't think it really does much wrong. If I had to point out something, I'd say the debugging side doesn't feel very useful.

huge open-source knowledge base

Pros

Having access to such a massive collection of open-source repositories can be incredibly valuable for any developer and offers a huge amount of learning material.

Cons

Newer authentication process can feel a bit tiring and may be difficult for developers who are just getting started.

open-source powerhouse

Pros

One of the biggest advantages of it is how many open-source projects are available to contribute to. I've had the chance to join quite a few of them and GitHub was always at the center of that work. It also gives me confidence that my company's software is secure in GitHub repositories. We rely on it to collaborate on source code, create pull requests and manage branches without issues. I've also used GitHub's CI/CD features and they've worked really well for us.

Cons

I can't point to any major downsides with this software. A few parts of the interface might be worth refining but that's mostly personal preference since everything is still functional and well designed.

trusted standard for version control

Pros

When it comes to version control, it feels like the go-to option because it has such a long track record in the development world. Nearly 90% of the software developers I know store both their public and private projects there. If you already work in VS Code or Visual Studio, choosing GitHub just feels like the natural fit.

Cons

One concern came up around security when I switched files from public to private. In my case, I had originally made a project public and after realizing I'd been hacked, it became clear that if the project had contained private account details or passwords, that information could have been exposed.

secure collaboration for open source

Pros

This tool really hits the mark when it comes to source code management. Security is taken seriously and the CLI makes working from the terminal feel very simple and comfortable. It also keeps multiple developers aligned making team-based software development much easier. Also, open-source projects can be created, accessed and improved publicly and contributors can participate from anywhere in the world.

Cons

In my observation its project and issue management side feels weaker compared to the rest of the platform. Features such as roadmap planning, portfolio-level management and story mapping are missing which leaves it a bit behind competitors like Azure DevOps and Jira in that area.

Github fits every dev tool

Pros

It has a lot going for it. I regularly visit it because that's where a huge amount of open-source software and source code lives. It also works smoothly with the development tools I already use especially Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code so I can get my work done without paying anything extra.

Cons

Beginners may struggle at first and it takes some time to really understand how to use it the right way.

coding together across borders

Pros

One of the best things about this software is being able to code with people on the other side of the world. I also learned a lot from using it and it gave me the chance to connect with talented people without needing a business plan or any investment.

Cons

At times the software can slow down and that ends up affecting overall performance speed.

appealing interface

Pros

I liked it.. it is very accessible for someone like me. The interface feels simple to use and one feature I especially enjoy is the static website tool for presenting my portfolio.

Cons

Its website takes a while to reflect updates on it even after I manually change the information. That delay is frustrating and it's something that really should be improved soon.

excellent for code review visibility

Pros

It is probably the best-known Git platform and it provides really useful insight when reviewing source code from a security perspective. Tracking down new code changes is simple both from the command line and through the GUI which helps a lot when spotting recent updates and potentially vulnerable code. It also makes it very clear to see exactly what changed after a security fix so understanding how the fix was implemented is much easier.

Cons

Because it is built around Git, the more advanced commands and features come with a pretty steep learning curve. Most people will stick to the basic functions, such as git clone to download a local copy of a repository or git pull and git commit to sync changes with the remote repository. Once you move into more advanced tasks like merging, removing code or reverting to a previous state, it can take quite a bit of time to learn properly.

Blazing fast source control

Pros

Compared with other source control platforms I've used, it feels incredibly fast and the overall feature set is top-notch. A lot of the usual Git headaches get handled behind the scenes automatically, often without me even noticing anything went wrong. I haven't seen another source control system manage that as well as GitHub.

Cons

That said it still isn't especially welcoming for end users, brand-new developers or people who aren't developers at all. There's plenty of terminology like branch, commit and orphan that can be hard to understand at first and the way the site is organized can feel confusing early on. It does seem like GitHub is making progress on this though.

open-source collaboration powerhouse

Pros

It gives me a free way to collaborate and share code in an open environment. It comes with a lot of useful features, including bug tracking, project wikis and even a social aspect that makes it feel like a developer community. I also use it to host my own website. Since it's the largest repository of open-source projects, it's an incredibly valuable platform and GitHub's Arctic Vault Archive Program is a big plus for long-term code preservation.

Cons

One limitation is that editing files in the browser isn't really available the way I'd want so I have to download files, make changes and upload them again. Another downside is that I can't write code directly on it which means I need to rely on a separate editor like Atom or Sublime Text.

Pros

I've been using it to build and manage software projects and it comes with plenty of features that really help throughout the application development process. It also works really well for collaborating with other developers. The platform is very user-friendly, feels secure and I'd definitely recommend it to fellow developers.

Cons

I have nothing negative to mention here.

Fast response every time

Pros

Something I really appreciate is how quickly the responses come through. That matters a lot to a software developer especially when you need a website that reacts fast and keeps things moving.

Cons

No complaints about this website. From what I've seen, it's been a very satisfying experience overall.
