Accurate insights at a glance

Pros

At a glance, I can see exactly what's happening with my open orders and projects and that's absolutely essential. The possibilities this software brings to improving my company's data analytics feel almost limitless.

Cons

Because the software is so powerful, it does come with a bit of a learning curve and can be somewhat difficult to use at first.

Versatile integration

Pros

Built by Microsoft, this tool comes with a lot of advanced capabilities for data analysis and reporting in an enterprise environment. It connects to a wide range of data sources and reports can be configured and sent out on a regular basis. It also integrates very well with other Microsoft products which makes it even more useful.

Cons

I didn't run into any major downsides while using it but the app does occasionally hang when working with very large volumes of data.

Easy to use for everyone

Pros

Getting started is very easy and it gives newer users a real sense of confidence when working with data.

Cons

At the same time, just dragging a few data fields onto the screen can make some users feel like they fully understand analytics. That can create problems for the organization and seriously affect data accuracy.

deep insights

Pros

There's a lot of flexibility when it comes to customizing dashboards especially with the many plugins available. It offers plenty of ways to filter data and drill down into the details, while still keeping the visuals clear and understandable. Another big advantage is how well it connects with other Microsoft Office tools like Excel and it also handles multiple data sources without much trouble.

Cons

Getting the most out of the platform takes time because the learning curve is pretty steep and the different views can make things feel complicated at first. The web browser version is also more limited in terms of features and Mac compatibility can be an issue. On top of that licensing can get expensive for organizations that need access for a large number of users.

has a lot of potential

Pros

Its a very user friendly tool with a lot of potential. It presents relevant data really well in executive-level presentations and also helps with project management.

Cons

One downside is that some programming knowledge is needed to connect it with other software like Excel and Microsoft 365.

An analytics boost

Pros

Using the program feels fairly simple when you already know Excel, Pivot Tables and Power Pivot. That familiarity really helps with the learning curve.

Cons

Using DAX effectively does take some studying on your part if you want to make the most of those features.

Helps keep the team motivated

Pros

This has made a real difference for my team. We can now keep track of how the team is progressing with document delivery and having that visibility has helped everyone stay more engaged and motivated as we follow the results.

Cons

The data takes a while to load and it also needs to be refreshed every day. It would be much better if there were an automatic update option.

powerful dashboards and secure insights

Pros

Among the data visualization tools I've used, this stands out as one of the most complete. It lets me pull data from multiple sources like Azure and SharePoint databases which makes it very versatile. The platform has a lot of potential because it can transform raw data and present it in a much clearer, more useful way. One thing I really appreciate is the user interface. It's user friendly and doesn't come with a steep learning curve so even new users can get comfortable with it quickly. The tables are displayed in an organized manner which makes analyzing data much more manageable. Security is another strong point since only authorized users can access the information and that matters a lot when you're working with sensitive data.

Cons

Im not too happy with the desktop version because it tends to use a lot of RAM and can feel slow at times. To run it properly, you really need a computer with solid specifications.

flexible imports

Pros

It lets me bring in data from all kinds of file formats instead of locking me into just one. I also appreciate being able to clean up, reshape and edit the data before I start using any analytical tools. On top of that the interface feels very familiar because it resembles other Microsoft products so if you've used other Microsoft applications before, it's pretty natural to get comfortable with it.

Cons

Collaboration is where this platform feels a bit lacking since the tools it offers for teamwork are fairly limited and it's difficult to manage a project with a team directly through the platform. Another issue is that I can't really take advantage of overlapping windows when I need to work across several workspaces at the same time.

Strong reporting feature

Pros

Getting started with it was quick since the installation process is easy. It offers both a free version and a paid option which makes it accessible for different needs and budgets. It handles a large amount of source data very well and deploying it is simple. Creating reports and visual graphics is also very convenient and there is plenty of helpful documentation available when needed.

Cons

One area that could still be improved is the data gateway especially in terms of how it functions and the different connection methods it supports.

dynamic dashboards

Pros

Pulling data in from different sources is one of the best parts and it gives you dynamic ways to present everything in a clear, interactive format.

Cons

A downside is that it uses a lot of system resources so you really need a computer with at least 8 GB of RAM to run it properly.

excellent data modeling capabilities

Pros

There are plenty of options for working with data relationships, visualizations, models, charts and the filters are excellent.

Cons

Fine tuning the alignment between visual elements is not very good and sometimes it takes several adjustments to line objects up properly. It also often refuses to accept a 1 to 1 relationship between columns from data sources that do not have repeated values and keeps insisting the relationship has to be many to many. It still does not allow background customization directly inside the platform which forces the user to create a background in another program and then add it as the screen background making any later layout adjustment much more labor intensive. At times the data does not refresh as the database changes and there are tasks that should be simpler but end up requiring several steps, such as sorting the categories in a stacked bar chart according to the user's preferred order.

May 2022

strong data visualization

Pros

Coming from other Office tools, getting comfortable with the basics of Power BI happens pretty quickly because the interface is very user friendly. Its biggest strength is the wide range of built in data source connectors available right out of the box. The data visualization features are also impressive and it works very well alongside other Microsoft products. One of the biggest advantages is that it's free for most use cases. On top of that the cloud version adds plenty of storage and collaboration options at a reasonable price and moving between the desktop and cloud versions is pretty smooth.

Cons

There are times when the desktop app feels sluggish especially when working with large, diverse datasets. And while the basics are approachable, unlocking the more advanced capabilities comes with a steeper learning curve than some competing tools. Setting up cloud integrations is not always simple either and connecting to on premises or SaaS data sources can sometimes be a challenge.
