Ideal archive tool

Pros

Right from the start 7-Zip covers pretty much every common compression format and quite a few others as well. It has a tiny footprint, both in disk space and memory use, so it never is heavy on the system. Installation is quick and it ties into Windows really well especially with the optional context menu integration. I can use it from the command line for batch files or PowerShell scripts and the GUI works well when I want to handle things manually. Another nice touch is that the installer includes a detailed help file, so There is no need to open a browser just to figure something out. On top of that it's free, open-source, updated regularly and clearly still actively maintained. It's always one of the first programs I put on a new PC.

Cons

There are still a few things missing compared with WinRAR. For instance, it doesn't have an Archive tab in File Properties that shows details like file count, packed and unpacked sizes, plus a visual compression ratio bar. The interface also is a bit old-fashioned and a few menu items can be somewhat unclear.

Simple secure zip tool

Pros

7-Zip is what I use whenever I need to zip or unzip files and the password-protection option adds a nice extra layer of security. It's also very simple to use which makes the whole process quick and convenient.

Cons

I don't really have any complaints aboutthis software, although it would still be nice to see a few more features added over time.

Handles large batches well

Pros

Handling a large batch of files is where 7-Zip really helps. I have been using it for about 8 years and it has consistently done the job well. The password protection option for compressed files is also a big Plus since it adds an extra layer of security.

Cons

It would be even better if it came with more added features. At the moment, the softwareis mostly limited to compressing and extracting files.

secure file sharing win

Pros

Sending files securely is one of the biggest advantages here. I can protect archives with a password which is especially important when working with datasets that contain personal health information, since it helps keep the process HIPAA compliant.

Cons

That said, the applicationlooks like it has not been refreshed in years. The interface is extremely basic and I would really like to see some updates or added features that make it feel more modern.

quick zipping every day

Pros

I have been using 7-Zip for about five years now and it has been a really quick and simple tool for compressing and extracting files. It is also integrated into the right-click menu and available throughout Windows folders which makes it very easy to use.

Cons

The interface is quite basic and I do wish there were an option to choose the compression format directly when creating a zip file from a directory.

handy context menu integration

Pros

From the Windows context menu, 7-Zip fits naturally into the workflow and it handles extracting a wide range of compressed file formats without any trouble. That versatility makes it really convenient to use.

Cons

Honestly it's already an excellent product as it is. Everything is accessible and I wouldn't change a thing.

fast file bundling and savings

Pros

Bundling large files into a single package and sending them to the right destination takes very little time with this tool. It also helps reduce storage usage, saves time and keeps files together so nothing gets lost or left out.

Cons

At times, compression is slow when working with files stored on a network drive. The interface also looks a bit outdated and not very appealing, although it still gets the job done reliably.

Offer the best support

Pros

Extraction is really quick and it handles a wide range of file formats that a lot of other programs don't support. It's also been very reliable for me and hasn't crashed at all especially compared with other archive and zip tools I have used.

Cons

I honestly don't have any complaints because I really enjoy usingthe program.

Most effective strong compression

Pros

Compared to every archiver I have used, 7Z has been the most effective by far. On the ultra setting, its compression is even stronger than RAR5 which makes it very hard for other tools to compete. It can also archive into more than 20 different formats and the setup is very easy. Another big plus is that it can open some uncommon archive types like ARJ, ONEPKG and XAR. On top of that it's open-source and licensed under LGPL which means modifying the code is legally possible to some extent. I also appreciate how many automation options it offers. Using PowerShell scripts, for example, you can automate tasks like creating self-extracting archives after building software or finishing project files.

Cons

There honestly aren't many real downsides. The biggest one is that using the ultra setting on a slower computer can make archiving feel pretty slow, although switching to normal improves the speed, with the expected trade-off of getting a larger archive size. Also if you increase the default dictionary size into the GB range, the main process can use more memory than expected but again, that comes with the benefit of better compression efficiency.

Open source wide format

Pros

Being open source is a big plus and it handles a wide range of file formats like 7z, rar, zip and others without any trouble. There are also plenty of customization options available when creating compressed files which makes it even more useful.

Cons

I really do not have any actual complaints aboutthis software. The only thing worth mentioning is that, like many open-source tools, there is no traditional customer support, so you are mostly relying on community forums and documentation for help.

strong encryption tool

Pros

One of the best things about 7-Zip is its high compression ratio especially with the 7z format. It also works with nearly all popular archive formats for both packing and unpacking which makes it very versatile. On top of that it uses strong encryption algorithms and integrates nicely with the Windows shell, so it fits well into our everyday use.

Cons

The only downside is that the interface is very basic compared with competitors like WinRAR and WinZip.

Zip format easy sharing

Pros

This software lets me compress files in two formats .7z and .zip. The .zip option is especially useful because most people can open the files I send without any trouble, even if they are using a different compression program. A lot of users do not realize that 7-Zip can create .zip files as well, so that feature turned out to be very practical for sharing files with others.

Cons

At first, there was an issue when I sent my manager a .7z compressed file because their software did not support that format, so they could not open it. I initially thought the only fix would be to change the software my manager was using. Later, I discovered thatthe same programalso allows .zip compression which solved the compatibility problem. Since then, I have been happy usingthis softwarefor both types of compression.

quite a useful tool

Pros

The software handles just about every file type and compression level I need and the compress and email option is a really useful touch.

Cons

One thing that needs improvement is how it deals with files that are currently being used by another program or are still in the middle of being copied, since those really shouldn't be compressed.
