“One of the top tools out there now

Pros

Everything is designed to support both beginners and advanced users. I personally find it very accessible as I did not have to put a lot of effort or time getting started with. In short no matter what your skill level is you will be able to use it without much of a struggle.

Cons

The viewport has always been a mess and it still has not been fixed. Now with Solaris the same old issues from the SOP view are showing up again such as it is slow, crashes a lot and brings more frustration than improvements.

“Awesome for creating advanced visuals

Pros

It is packed with features like procedural modeling, VFX tools, dynamic sims and more. Plus the ability to script in Python or VEX means we can easily customize it however we want. Also it is flexible, open and easy to integrate with other stuff.

Cons

There are a few things I have noticed such as it comes with a steep learning curve and can feel really complex at times. Also performance is not always smooth and the lack of solid resources or a very active community makes it tougher to learn and troubleshoot.

“Makes visuals neat and professional

Pros

Houdini integrates well with other 3D applications which makes team collaboration much smoother. Plus it has helped us build more efficient workflows and actually stick to them from start to finish.

Cons

We have put in some feature requests but getting a reply usually takes a while. Other folks in the community are dealing with the same problems we are and it does not seem like anyone has a proper answer to offer.

Pros

Houdini's VFX capabilities are top-notch from fluid simulations to particle effects, it handles a wide range. Plus its procedural workflow gives artists like me the freedom to create without limits making it a great fit for game and film production

Cons

Doing something as simple as a basic animation takes extra steps and more technical know-how compared to other programs. And I feel like the pricing can also be a hurdle especially for people who are following a strict budget.

“Change the way you see 3D

Pros

What I enjoy most is how technical and node-based Houdini is as it challenges me to think differently about 3D and FX. Plus the parametric design and wide range of tools make complex tasks feel much simpler compared to other software.

Cons

It is not the easiest tool to learn as the learning curve is definitely noticeable. Also I feel like it would help a lot if there were more built-in guidance or alerts when something is set up incorrectly to keep beginners from getting stuck.

“A must-have tool if you're into design

Pros

Houdini has become my go-to tool for all kinds of 3D animation. I just wish I had discovered it sooner as it's completely transformed my workflow. The rendering quality is top notch and managing large design projects is way more seamless now.

Cons

So far I do not have any real complaints about it. I have been using it for a while and it has become really suitable for me. What stands out is that each update tackles bigger issues making it even better and more user friendly over time.

“Free and totally next level for 3D work

Pros

I still cannot believe it's free and not just free but seriously powerful. It holds its own against paid software and is quickly becoming a real contender in the 3D space.

Cons

Up to this point there has not been anything about this software that I have disliked or had issues with.

“Our favorite for FX effects

Pros

One of the best things is how user friendly it feels. The nodes are labeled in a way that just makes sense and the layout is very well organized. And since it is node-based, going back and making changes later is easy without me messing everything up.

Cons

In my opinion the pricing is a bit of a barrier if you are working solo. Even though they offer separate versions for individuals the cost is still quite steep and can hold you back from tapping into everything the software offers.
