Houdini Software Features
Pyro FX (Fire & Smoke)
Pyro FX lets you create realistic fire and smoke effects quickly and easily. It utilizes your computer’s GPU to accelerate simulations without compromising quality. The feature also offers advanced volume rendering, which means the fire and smoke look very detailed and lifelike in your final project.
Fluids (Water & Liquids)
This feature helps you create realistic water and liquid effects by simulating natural forces, such as surface tension and viscosity. You can create detailed splashes, waves, and white-water effects that behave like real liquids. It’s useful for any project that needs water or liquid simulations, making scenes look much more natural.
Particle Dynamics
Particle Dynamics allows you to simulate small, moving objects such as dust, debris, or groups of birds. It utilizes a node-based system that allows you to control how particles move and interact with forces and collisions. This helps create natural, dynamic effects that add life and detail to your scenes.
Destruction FX (Bullet Rigid Body Dynamics)
With Destruction FX, you can simulate objects breaking or falling apart realistically. It utilizes a powerful solver to manage complex interactions, including forces, constraints, and collisions. This feature is ideal for scenes where objects need to be smashed, shattered, or destroyed believably.
Vellum (Fast Cloth & Hair)
Vellum is designed for fast and realistic cloth, hair, and soft body simulations. It utilizes your GPU to accelerate calculations, allowing simulations to run smoothly and efficiently. Vellum is easy to set up and adjust, making it great for creating clothes that move naturally or hair that flows realistically in animations.

“One of the top tools out there now”
Pros
Everything is designed to support both beginners and advanced users. I personally find it very accessible as I did not have to put a lot of effort or time getting started with. In short no matter what your skill level is you will be able to use it without much of a struggle.
Cons
The viewport has always been a mess and it still has not been fixed. Now with Solaris the same old issues from the SOP view are showing up again such as it is slow, crashes a lot and brings more frustration than improvements.

“Awesome for creating advanced visuals”
Pros
It is packed with features like procedural modeling, VFX tools, dynamic sims and more. Plus the ability to script in Python or VEX means we can easily customize it however we want. Also it is flexible, open and easy to integrate with other stuff.
Cons
There are a few things I have noticed such as it comes with a steep learning curve and can feel really complex at times. Also performance is not always smooth and the lack of solid resources or a very active community makes it tougher to learn and troubleshoot.

We have put in some feature requests but getting a reply usually takes a while. Other folks in the community are dealing with the same problems we are and it does not seem like anyone has a proper answer to offer.
