A huge upgrade from meditech

Pros

Back when I worked at my previous hospital we used Meditech and moving to Cerner feels like upgrading from the 1990s to modern systems. I really appreciate that most charting can be done in just a few clicks and I can still insert detailed notes whenever the situation calls for it.

Cons

Honestly nothing negative to report as I have been on it for nearly two years and it has performed really well for me.

very limited charts

Pros

The patient charts is easy to navigate and I can easily read lab results because they are grouped by type.

Cons

It's frustrating that I can only open one chart at a time and I cannot search for a patient by room number when I need to.

Fast retrieval of patient data

Pros

I am impressed by how fast it is and how quickly it retrieves data such as patient-specific details are all loaded for my staff to use.

Cons

Signing into the system feels slow because it must load all patient-related data for my specific user role and I find it delays my workflow.

Very user-friendly with quick finding

Pros

Overall it's very user-friendly. Most of the time I can quickly locate exactly what I am looking for without having to search around.

Cons

I have to deal with multiple login screens. Given how our organization uses Cerner, I end up signing into several different pages just to do simple tasks.

Incredibly simple and easy to navigate

Pros

Being already familiar with Cerner's EMR made learning this software very easy for me. Also I find it very user-friendly and simple to learn and because I use it throughout my entire workday, its ease of use is a significant benefit for my daily tasks.

Cons

Honestly I cannot think of any real drawbacks with this system. I find it incredibly simple and easy to navigate and each chart holds a huge amount of data. I also like being able to pull up multiple records for the same patient without issue.

Certain areas are genuinely easy

Pros

Certain areas of the chart are genuinely easy for me to enter notes into and I really enjoy using the I/O screen as well as the mpage view.

Cons

I struggle with several screens that make charting difficult and it bothers me that almost every action opens a separate page. Tracking down earlier notes is also a frustrating process.

Multiple screen options but has issues

Pros

I have found the system really easy to use, with multiple screen options that I can switch between and practical pools that help organize my work.

Cons

Too many steps are required for certain tasks and I find the charting tools awkward and not well suited for everyday use.

Great for ipad dictation and management

Pros

I oversee the PowerChart Touch users and devices and although the system isn't flawless, it generally accomplishes what our physicians require day to day. I am really glad clinicians can dictate using an iPad and I appreciate that I can control and manage the devices from which all of this activity takes place for our organization.

Cons

With PowerChart, data does sync to the PowerChart Touch app and back again but I find this can create confusing situations. It becomes a headache for our clinicians and my support team when we're trying to troubleshoot problems. Having to clarify that only certain elements transfer over isn't ideal and often complicates support conversations.

Great patient portal and education

Pros

As a clinician, I value the patient portal and built-in education because it syncs with the EHR and my patients' longitudinal records. The portal makes it easy for members to message providers securely to schedule or modify appointments, check clinical details, request medication refills, update personal information and upload files. I also appreciate that accredited, evidence-based educational materials, reinforced by best-practice guidelines and standards from leading medical associations, are included in the EHR for physicians.

Cons

Dragon's voice-recognition feature within the EHR consistently struggles to accurately transcribe spoken notes.

Visibility at our fingertips but network dependent

Pros

With Cerner, we keep our item master literally at our fingertips and I notice it gives much greater visibility into inventory for our customers and stakeholders.

Cons

Because PeopleSoft is web-based, when our network goes down I lose access to the procurement system and I often find it frustrating and unclear where I should navigate to locate orders or specific items.

Middle of the road but customizable

Pros

I find Cerner to be a fairly middle-of-the-road EMR. It can be customized, though that's usually simplest during the implementation phase. I see it everywhere and I actually like how it looks and feels to use.

Cons

it doesn't exchange data with third-party systems reliably and I have run into a lot of bugs.

more cons than pros

Pros

I have found their products to be reliable and stable and they provide solutions that cover virtually every sector within healthcare.

Cons

the sheer size of the company and its large employee base means responsibility for products and issues gets passed around constantly. even when you finally reach someone who can help, I wouldn't count on them sticking around long, as people rarely remain in one position. High internal attrition is something I worry about a lot.

better look for other options

Pros

When Cerner's systems are designed properly and remain stable, I see them perform reliably. I appreciate how much flexibility they give in accomplishing tasks and there are lots of capabilities that aren't obvious at a glance but become available to more seasoned users. Overall, I have found their products are often geared toward supporting efficiency and improving accuracy in many situations as well.

Cons

I have found that many of the elements packed into their redesigned mPages don't actually add meaningful functionality and tend to leave clinicians more confused than helped. Also, the day-to-day workflows for clinical staff like MAs and RNs feel noticeably clunkier compared with the smoother processes available to physicians which I find really disappointing and often irritating. Beyond that, it's a constant puzzle to decipher what some alert notifications are trying to tell me, along with other embedded directions or labels scattered through the apps. While a number of the labels are sensible and familiar from clinical practice, several others are baffling to end users unless we go back to Cerner for clarification.
