useful project support

Pros

The way it supports our project groups and subgroups helps keep all project components organized in a clear structure.

Cons

It would be even better if it included a UI-based CI/CD configuration similar to what Azure offers.

Extensive app integrations

Pros

It connects well with other third-party applications which makes it possible to build a dynamic and efficient work ecosystem for us without much struggle.

Cons

To really get the most out of it you need to understand all of its features and how they work. Because of that, it tends to be more suitable for intermediate users who already have some knowledge of source code tools.

good tool to use

Pros

Being open source is a big advantage. It's really useful if you want to host your own custom version control system and the free private repositories are a nice bonus.

Cons

Interface doesn't feel as polished as GitHub. It also has quite a few bugs and offers fewer features than other competing tools. One thing I miss is an "Explore repositories" option like GitHub has. Since it's also less widely used than GitHub I still prefer GitHub for my open source projects.

Private deployments in one hub

Pros

Running deployments on private servers is a big advantage for us and being able to control everything from one place keeps the information centralized. It also helps all the code stay managed in a much more private way.

Cons

I have not experienced anything that would make me avoid this tool. Software developers tend to prefer it and I can understand why.

well organized tool

Pros

As a code repository and management tool this works really well. The feature set feels well organized and it connects nicely with third-party applications. Being free and open-source also makes it a strong alternative to other expensive products.

Cons

No significant issues have come to my attention so far as everything appears well-structured and performs reliably.

Tasks management done right

Pros

It is very easy to use even for someone who is new to the industry. It makes a big difference to have a clear view of projects, sprint progress, each team member's workload and all open tasks which really helps with staying organized and getting the work done.

Cons

I'd still like to see is better documentation, maybe even more content on YouTube, to make it easier to learn everything it already offers. I really enjoy the tool but I feel like we're only using a small portion of its features compared to everything that's available.

Powerful SCM software

Pros

Among the SCM tools I've used this one has been the best. It connects well with a range of CI/CD tools and the code review features are really good.

Cons

Nothing major to complain about. The only minor issue is that the 2021 UI/UX redesign felt a little confusing to me and I preferred the older look.

valuable code review feature

Pros

Installation and running is easy and it comes with plenty of keyboard shortcuts that really help when you're coding. The code review feature is also useful because it lets you clearly check your current changes before committing them to the project.

Cons

Dependency compatibility sometimes can be tricky with certain packages but aside from that, it's a very clean product.

Reliable private code hosting

Pros

Compared with the public version of GitHub it performs really well. Once it is installed in the cloud and configured properly, I'd say it feels just like using GitHub itself. Pulling and pushing code works very well especially for private groups and smaller teams. The security is also very strong for managing code versions in internal development environments.

Cons

It has been working very well for us so I don't really have any complaints at this point.

helpful snippets and docs

Pros

The standout features for me are the code snippets and the built-in code documentation. I have not seen another application that offers that combination. Since it is open source, you can also run it on your own infrastructure and allocate the resources you need.

Cons

Using it is challenging on Windows and that makes the experience less convenient. I also feel it would benefit from having a desktop app because code tracking would be much easier that way.

keeps our repositories private

Pros

One of the biggest benefits is not being tied to a company like GitHub or Bitbucket. It gives my team confidence that the work we are doing stays completely in-house which brings real peace of mind without having to rely on native Git.

Cons

Setting it up can be difficult if you are not already familiar with Linux administration. Ongoing admin tasks and upgrades are not very simple either.

one hub for every project

Pros

Having tasks, assets and code together in one place gives me everything I need to run a software project without jumping between different tools.

Cons

Pricing is pretty high compared with GitHub and if you're only using a few of the features it may not really feel worth the cost.

Simplified Dev and PM collaboration

Pros

It connects with just about everything. We use it alongside JIRA and it has made our move toward CI/CD much simpler for both the developers and the project managers.

Cons

Onboarding can be complex as it requires a person some training before they can use this tool easily. A lot of the time gets spent figuring out how to do things that should actually be very simple.

Product that delivers

Pros

Working with this tool makes team development much more manageable. We can review pushed code online and leave comments before anything gets approved and merged into the relevant branch. That has been really useful, both for learning from senior developers and for making sure the code we push to the repository is clean.

Cons

There is not much to complain about here. The only thing I would really want is for the free tier to support automatic syncing whenever there are changes in forked repositories.

slow performance!

Pros

There was a time when this felt like a suitable alternative to GitHub especially because it offered free private repositories. Now that this advantage is gone I honestly do not see any real benefits that set the software apart anymore.

Cons

Using the software feels slow and the API is designed very poorly. They also seem intent on looking different from GitHub by renaming familiar things like "Pull Request" to "Merge Request" which just makes the experience more confusing.

perfect tool

Pros

It covers just about everything needed to run a full platform, from a Git repository to Kanban boards and burndown charts. It is valuable not only for developers but also for project managers and product owners. Recently 2FA was added as well.

Cons

I really do not have any complaints. The software has been excellent.

helpful real-time monitoring

Pros

This is one of the most efficient version control tools out there. It lets developers keep the entire codebase organized within a single project, makes conflict resolution much more manageable and also helps identify vulnerabilities in the project. On top of that the real-time monitoring is really useful.

Cons

I haven't run into any drawbacks with it. From what I've seen the platform is doing an excellent job and takes a lot of the pressure off developers when it comes to maintaining the codebase.

adaptable for teams of all sizes

Pros

I really appreciate is that it comes in both community and enterprise editions which makes it useful for different kinds of teams. Even the free account includes nearly all of the core features so you can do a lot without paying upfront. As a CI platform it is top-tier and having the choice between the default repository and third-party repositories adds a lot of flexibility.

Cons

Permissions have caused some trouble on our side and have been an ongoing issue at times. The enterprise pricing also feels a little on the expensive side. It would also be much better if there were drag-and-drop options in the interface especially to make the experience simpler for non-technical users.
