Smooth office 365 integration, strong portfolio views

Pros

One of the things I like most about Microsoft Project is how smoothly it connects with Office 365. Since it's a built-in part of the suite, I can access it from my browser or phone without any hassle. This integration makes complex tasks like building projects from scratch and creating clear, useful reports such as burndown charts and Gantt timelines much easier than before. I also rely on MS Project's strong portfolio management features to get full visibility into all active proposals and consistently track their progress.

Cons

When a project has a fluid schedule with lots of revisions and no fixed dates or durations, I notice that is not the ideal tool for the job. Because many collaborators don't have Excel readily available, exporting data into Excel becomes cumbersome and sharing information gets tricky. For that reason, I always recommend fully defining the project's scope before I start inputting details so the setup aligns with reality.

ideal for small organizations

Pros

It is easy to use, supports templates and makes exporting and keeping critical paths up to date really simple. It also ties into Microsoft tools and a handful of non-Microsoft apps. Overall it is a strong choice for small to mid sized organizations tracking project progress.

Cons

This product is hard to install and updates too often. It also requires MS Office for the financials module so many companies don't want to buy it. So I'd prefer a web version with basic free access.

Helps monitor projects and visualize path

Pros

Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management helps me monitor my projects and choose the optimal route to successful delivery. It also gives me a clear visual of the way ahead and highlights the immediate tasks that require attention right now.

Cons

It isn't bundled with MS Office so I have to purchase it on its own. That extra expense sometimes feels difficult to justify especially when there are comparable project tools available online at no cost.

Close performance monitoring, built-in automation

Pros

Project Online lets me closely monitor the performance of portfolios, teams and individual projects by offering different views such as by person, by project or across all resources. In just a few clicks, I can build clear visual reports that include direct input from teammates making it easy to reassign or adjust tasks when priorities change. Also I am genuinely impressed by how much more efficiently our organization runs thanks to built-in automation and scripting features that save time. I could list many more useful tools but hopefully this gives you a sense of why Microsoft Project remains my go-to for managing projects.

Cons

The interface and workflow in it is pretty hard to get the hang of. There's a steep learning curve for me when it comes to navigating its features. It's also frustrating that it doesn't integrate well with non-Microsoft tools which limits flexibility. The cost is another downside as this product is priced noticeably higher than many rivals in the project management space. On top of that allocating resources via MS PPM is time-consuming since it requires handling a large amount of detailed data very precisely.

Likes detailed task breakdown and integrations

Pros

I really like the detailed breakdown and follow-up for each task which helps me keep scheduled activities under control. I also like that it supports a large number of third-party integrations which is very helpful.

Cons

There are occasional bugs and glitches. And even though the program is feature-rich, it does not display warnings when these problems happen so I find it hard to pinpoint what's going wrong.

summaries are good, complicated to start

Pros

This tool is very useful for summarizing information for executive teams in a way that's brief yet polished, giving a high-end and visually appealing impression to my audience.

Cons

When I first started a project, I found it quite complicated to use as it took some time and several tutorials before I understood how to fully leverage the software and all of its features properly.

provide good set of useful tools

Pros

Microsoft Project helps me organise projects and gives me the specific set of tools I need to plan and track work. Also it is fairly easy to use especially when I'm already familiar with other Microsoft applications.

Cons

There is not much I can criticize about. It performs as I anticipate and is quite user-friendly. but if I were to suggest an improvement, I'd like a few more customization options to tailor things to my workflow.

way too expensive tool

Pros

It's integrated into M365 which I find simply amazing.

Cons

Honestly do I really have to pay for the priciest tier just so I can interact with external customers or collaborate with other team members?

very comprehensive for coordinating people and resources

Pros

Microsoft Project is the most comprehensive project management software, covering virtually every use for coordinating people, resources and timing.

Cons

This product is too hard to learn. As I only figured out some problems by making mistakes.

tracks details and aligns people company-wide

Pros

Across our team, Microsoft Project helps us track virtually every project detail and the resources required to finish tasks. We apply it in several different ways and it really helps align people and makes project status easy to see company-wide so everyone stays informed and on the same page.

Cons

It is complex. You get good results only if you put in time and effort. Plus building a template takes a lot of work up front but it pays off.

modern interface, simple to learn

Pros

Microsoft Project offers an attractive interface and tools that are simple to learn.

Cons

The software does not support true real-time updates and it lacks the intelligence to automatically correct or adjust the critical path method (CPM) when changes occur.
