AI tools are revolutionizing the job application process, offering job seekers new ways to save time, reduce stress, and improve resume quality. However, these advancements raise questions about how hiring managers feel about AI-enhanced resumes and their impact on hiring outcomes.
Based on surveys of over 1,000 job seekers and hiring managers, this report explores the adoption of AI in job applications, its benefits for candidates, and the current preferences of hiring professionals.
AI tools are reshaping the way job seekers approach the application process. This section explores how widespread AI adoption is among candidates, its perceived benefits, and its impact on hiring outcomes.
The use of AI tools in job applications is rapidly growing, with 75% of job seekers incorporating them into their process. Adoption rates vary by generation—Gen Z led at 78%, followed by millennials at 74% and Gen X at 72%. Industry-wise, technology professionals were the highest adopters (88%), with marketing (83%), finance (80%), and healthcare (77%) close behind. Manufacturing and retail workers also showed significant usage, at 75% and 71%, respectively.
The benefits of AI tools are substantial, with 77% of users reporting increased confidence in the application process. Time-saving emerged as the primary advantage (74%), followed by improved resume tailoring (48%) and reduced anxiety (41%). On average, AI saved job seekers two hours per application.
AI's role extends beyond efficiency—it impacts results. Job seekers in tech (20%) and marketing (18%) reported higher callback rates for AI-assisted resumes. However, the technology is not without controversy. Nearly 1 in 5 applicants admitted to lying about using AI tools when applying for jobs, with Gen Z being the most likely to do so (24%).
Job seekers using AI tools saw notable financial benefits, with 77% securing higher-paying roles compared to 48% of non-AI users. However, not all AI users fully optimize the technology—7% admitted to submitting AI-generated applications without making any revisions, potentially risking inaccuracies or missed opportunities to tailor their documents further.
While AI can enhance application quality, it may slightly extend the job search. Candidates who used AI reported an average hiring timeline of 3.3 months, compared to 2.9 months for those who didn't use such tools. Despite this delay, the long-term advantages—such as improved earning potential—highlight AI's growing value in the job application process.
The use of AI tools in job applications is shaping how hiring managers evaluate candidates, sparking a mix of benefits and concerns. Exploring these views reveals how AI-generated content is influencing hiring decisions across industries.
Most hiring managers (61%) said AI tools enhance resume quality. Over half noted fewer grammatical and spelling mistakes (55%) and more polished and professional-looking application materials (51%), while 44% cited better clarity and structure. However, some hiring managers expressed concerns, with 61% feeling AI-generated resumes could make applications seem inauthentic.
Other top issues were the potential misrepresentation of skills (55%), candidates becoming overreliant on technology (50%), and the use of generic or repetitive language (35%). Additionally, 34% noted that AI might lead to similar content among multiple applicants, making it harder to distinguish the best candidates.
AI-generated resumes can also pose risks for candidates. Nearly 1 in 4 hiring managers said they would disqualify candidates for submitting AI-crafted resumes. The industries where this sentiment was most prevalent included education (35%), manufacturing (34%), finance (33%), and tech (31%).
AI-generated resumes are increasingly common, but how do they compare to those written by humans? In a blind review of successful resumes, hiring managers evaluated both AI-generated and human-made versions.
Though 60% of hiring managers said they could identify AI-generated applications or resumes, 75% couldn't do so when tested. Overall, they showed a slight preference for human-written resumes, being 8% more likely to hire a candidate whose resume was not generated by AI.
While AI-generated resumes performed well, they trailed slightly behind human-created ones in terms of appeal and authenticity. This suggests that while AI tools can enhance the application process, a personalized touch remains a key factor in making a strong impression on hiring managers.
AI tools are transforming job applications, helping candidates save time, improve resume quality, and secure higher-paying jobs. While AI-generated resumes perform well in many areas, hiring managers show a slight preference for human-written resumes due to concerns about authenticity and originality. To maximize success, job seekers using AI tools to enhance their applications should take time to review the outputs for accuracy and to add a personal touch.
Methodology
We surveyed 601 job seekers and recent hires to understand their views on using AI during the job application process. The generational breakdown of respondents was: Gen Z (26%), millennials (53%), Gen X (19%), and baby boomers (2%). We also surveyed 403 HR representatives and hiring managers to gauge their perspectives on AI's role in job applications.
To further explore AI's impact, we compared human-created resumes with AI-generated ones that we tailored to specific job roles using prompts. In a blind survey of 403 hiring managers, participants evaluated an equal number of AI-generated and human-written resumes without knowing which was which. All data was collected in November 2024.
