NXT Blackbaud
Pros

This tool is fantastic for our non-profit organization. It allows us to handle invoice payments, vendor setup and storing important business files such as W9's and contracts. Its functionality is particularly helpful for tasks like sending out 1099's, setting up new projects and vendors, as well as providing the ability to process in-house checks and send out physical or electronic drafts.

Cons

At time accounting-wise, there can be slight inconsistencies in the general ledgers, but nothing major.

Review of Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT
Pros

As a library operating in the non-profit/government sector, Blackbaud serves us exceptionally well as a financial accounting system. They truly understand the unique needs of non-profit organizations and continually strive to develop solutions tailored to those needs. Blackbaud is remarkably user-friendly and facilitates easy training for new employees. The training programs offered by Blackbaud surpass those provided by most other products. We have access to over 20 classes, which can be taken with an online instructor or through e-learning. This comprehensive training has been instrumental in successfully implementing the software across multiple locations and ensuring our staff is well-prepared for their roles within Blackbaud.

Cons

As a government/non-profit agency, we are obligated to use purchase orders. Unfortunately, Blackbaud's purchase order system is not as user-friendly as the rest of the software. However, we have been informed that they are working on moving the purchase order system to WebView, which will introduce several changes to improve the usability of the PO portion. Additionally, we require multi-level approvals on invoices, and the interim solution provided by Blackbaud did not meet our organization's needs, as we are required to have a pre-audit statement on all purchase orders and invoices that are paid.

Pros

The web-based interface has an appealing look and provides a seamless user experience. The reporting feature is highly customizable and allows for easy sharing via email or dashboards.

Cons

The receivable module and EFT payments in Canada are not yet available in the browser view. As a result, these tasks have to be done in the database view, which is outdated, cumbersome and confusing.

Pros

Creating reports is not a problem with this software. Overall, it is a great accounting package and the go-to choice for non-profits of a certain size.

Cons

Overall, it's a great accounting package. However, my one complaint is the way accounts are created, using three parts: account number, fund and department. These three parts together form an account number, such as 7000-02-100. 7000 represents the traditional account, 02 signifies the fund and 100 represents the department. When creating accounts for all funds and departments, the account list becomes extensive.

Pros

The cost of this software compared to others in the market is very affordable. The implementation process went smoothly, and it without doubt performed excellently for us. The support team is usually quick to respond and provides helpful solutions to any issues we encounter.

Blackbaud NXT functions with great effort
Pros

The report writer feature allows me to develop financial statements by defining specific columns and rows. I can organize the rows based on the chart of accounts, and the columns are customizable and adequate.

Cons

Blackbaud lacks intuitiveness and user-friendliness. Controlling the software can be cumbersome. Additionally, the report writer in Financial Edge is less flexible compared to other software products I have used. Columns are defined based on time periods, so if we want to run the same financial statement from past time periods, we have to rewrite the specifications. Reporting periods should be defined relatively and should refer to a fiscal period selection at runtime.

Pros

The migration from the previous version was seamless, with the assistance of the Blackbaud team whenever needed. The "copy previous" function is highly helpful. I also like the availability of training opportunities through on-demand resources and Blackbaud University courses. Whenever I reach out to Blackbaud support, they are usually prompt in their responses and provide clear guidance.

Cons

Understanding the parameters that need to be set, such as post, can be confusing. It was quite shocking that BB support doesn't seem to have access to our org file when issues arise. I would have expected them to be able to access and guide us through these major problems. I understand it may be a data security concern, but having to add a BB staff as a user feels awkward.

Pros

This software offers an extensive range of features that may exceed your needs or expectations. It's particularly beneficial for large organizations with substantial budgets and numerous donors to track.

Cons

My organization is small, and we don't need all the bells and whistles that come with this software. It is way too expensive for the features we do use. It felt like buying a Ferrari when a Ford would have been more than sufficient. We opted for a better-suited software for our organization's size, which was much more budget-friendly and met our needs.

Pros

Pros

This software undoubtedly has great features. If you are a large organization with ample time and resources, you can derive significant value from it.

Cons

This program is very difficult to use. When I was leading a team that took over the accounting function from another organization, we encountered numerous issues. The previous company hadn't seen a balance sheet they had confidence in for many years. Extracting information in a usable form and format was difficult, if not impossible. I was informed that they spent $250k on implementation costs to get the program up and running. It was a poor choice for a company with just two people in the accounting department. I'm sure it may work well for a much larger organization, but it was not a good fit for us.

Pros

We used this software for the first time during the past year for the student class registration process. It was easy to recommend multiple classes, and students could conveniently choose their preferred options. Find payroll solutions elsewhere
Pros

This software is excellent for allocating funds to multiple sources. As a grant-funded non-profit, we need to separate shared costs, and Financial Edge handles this task exceptionally well.

Cons

The payroll module in Financial Edge is, without a doubt, the worst part of the software. Unless I manually enter each employee's time every day, there is no way to keep daily time records. Entering time for each pay period manually is incredibly labor-intensive, and we faced difficulties importing time records since FE lacks a timekeeping solution.

Pros

Both Financial Edge and Raiser's Edge, which we use, have a similar setup. They are very user-friendly, and it's easy to search for invoices. I also like that I have the quick access to recently viewed vendors.

Pros

While Blackbaud offers a comprehensive, flexible and useful solution, unfortunately, the poor customer service and high cost make it an unsuitable choice for any institution.

Financial Edge - the application that works with Raiser's Edge
Pros

If you are using Blackbaud's Raiser's Edge (RE) software and require another application for accounting functions, Financial Edge (FE) is the ideal solution. It handles vendor tracking, accounts receivable, accounts payable and more. Instead of using a separate accounting application like QuickBooks, Financial Edge integrates with Raiser's Edge. When gifts are posted in Raiser's Edge, the information is updated in Financial Edge. Batch numbers, appeals, funds, and campaigns migrate from RE to FE. The user interface and overall experience between Financial Edge and Raiser's Edge are consistent. If you are familiar with RE, then FE will be easy to learn. If you are hosted by Blackbaud, then you will be looking for FE/NXT.

Cons

While there is a significant level of integration between Raiser's Edge and Financial Edge, it comes at a cost. The Financial Edge application is expensive compared to other financial software options. If you host FE on-premise, Blackbaud charges based on the number of users. Moreover, you need a server with SQL to run FE, unlike QuickBooks, which can be installed on a local PC. If you opt for Blackbaud's hosting, you'll need to consider FE/NXT, and again, price becomes the main concern.

Financial NXT is a must!
Pros

Overall, Financial Edge provides a solid foundation for managing accounting, grants and other projects. It offers customizable dashboards and views which makes it easy to monitor accounts and generate detailed reports. The software allows smooth financial processing, eliminating the need for manual work. It even allows you to set budgets for the upcoming years.

Cons

All Blackbaud products come with a high price tag, but I believe they are worth the cost. We use a variety of Blackbaud products, although I do think their customer service could be improved. They provide numerous video tutorials and knowledge base articles, but some features can still be a bit difficult to understand.

Pros

I don't believe there are any more pros compared to American Fundware. Come on, Blackbaud, let's address some of these concerns. American Fundware was a perfectly good software that accomplished tasks in seconds with just a few clicks, unlike the current system which takes much longer.

Pros

FE is an excellent fund accounting software that covers all the basics. Accounts payable tasks are simple and easy to accomplish. The fixed asset module works flawlessly. Although the ledger structure can be a bit complicated at times, overall, it meets our needs.

Cons

Getting help with FE can be quite challenging. While there is a wealth of information available online, sometimes you simply need someone to guide you through an issue. I once encountered a situation where I had to involve their IT department to fix a software corruption while closing a fiscal year. The maintenance and support costs for this software are simply too high.

I have been using Blackbaud for almost 10 years, and I love how easy it is to work with the AP side. From viewing a vendor to adding a new invoice and checking for purchase orders, everything can be done within a single window (with tabs).

Cons

The only aspect I dislike is that updates sometimes complicate things. The alignment on my checks often gets quite disrupted, and it doesn't save the alignment for a new run. I'm not sure if it's a glitch. Additionally, the system tends to time out rather quickly if you're not constantly using it.

Financial Edge: Ease in Monthly Reporting
Pros

When coupled with Raiser's Edge fundraising software, Financial Edge provides seamless financial reporting opportunities for non-profits. I highly recommend partnering RE and FE together to maximize the capabilities of both products.

Cons

Financial Edge and Raiser's Edge have a learning curve, especially for those who haven't used the software before. When transitioning from another software, it's important to work closely with the Blackbaud team to ensure a successful switch.

Easy to use
Pros

There is a wide range of training available for Financial Edge. It integrates smoothly with Raiser's Edge, making it easy to teach new team members without having to cover all the training material.

Cons

If something isn't set up properly from the start, it becomes a lengthy process to rectify. However, I have found that it is very much possible to correct issues, and Blackbaud is quite helpful in that regard.
