“Strong EMR”
Pros
The EMR itself is genuinely well designed and ranks among the better options on the market. The workflows and order sets are laid out in a way that makes day-to-day use pretty simple so it's not a struggle to get things done in the system.
Cons
We used to like Athena overall but the Athena One package didn't work out for us. The onboarding process, along with Athena's corporate policies, was a letdown. We were told onboarding would take about three months yet throughout that period we attended weekly meetings that didn't feel especially helpful. Outside of those calls, my staff and I still had to complete a bunch of required onboarding tasks that were Honestly more than expected. After five months, the Athena One build still wasn't fully complete because of what felt like slow progress from Athena staff. Updates about delays were handled with corporate deflection and even "gaslighting" instead of clear communication. This is a solo provider practice handling just 1-2 insurance panels so there isn't a reasonable explanation for why the EMR integration should still have been incomplete after that long. We've used Athena in other settings too and it often seems like they're weak when it comes to submitting claims-practices can end up losing money if they're depending on Athena One for claim submission.

“excellent customization and easy sharing”
Pros
To be honest I am really pleased with it as the customization options are excellent and tasks can be shared or reassigned without a problem. The access tracking is also outstanding and patients find the platform accessible and easy to understand. Overall we have been satisfied in every manner with this system.
Cons
Like any EMR it takes considerable time to get comfortable with all its features. Fortunately in my experience the learning curve here is much gentler compared to many other systems and feels similar to other Athena offerings. Moreover moving a practice from paper to Cerner feels like Olympic-level effort, whereas moving from paper to AthenaOne felt more like competing at high school state championships.

“great emr, terrible onboarding”
Pros
The actual EMR is really well designed and it's one of the best out there. The workflows and order sets they have make it super easy to use.
Cons
I liked the Athena EMR itself but I really didn't like the AthenaOne package. The onboarding process and their corporate policies were a problem. They told us onboarding would take 3 months but we had these weekly meetings with their reps that weren't helpful at all. My staff and I did all the required tasks which felt like a lot, outside of those meetings. But after 5 months, it was still incomplete because their team hadn't done their part. When we asked about the delays, they just gave us corporate excuses and tried to make it seem like it was our fault. For a small practice like mine, there's no reason it should take that long. I've used Athena in other places and they seem to do a poor job submitting claims. I think most practices lose money if they rely on it for that.

“Its automation cuts admin time”
Pros
athena genuinely saves a ton of time for day-to-day patient care and office management. a lot of the workflow is already configured so providers can handle common tasks in just a few clicks-things like prescribing, referrals, encounter plans and even faxing right from the ehr. it also automates a lot of the patient-facing routine, including check-ins, appointment reminders, result notifications and scheduling. since i run a one-provider practice without staff, that automation makes a real difference in keeping everything moving.
Cons
i do wish the app had more customization so it could fit a boutique practice setup better. there are plenty of configuration options in general but some patient-facing messaging feels hard-coded and i'd love more ways to tailor those areas. i'd also like clearer communication and more transparent prioritization when coding bugs come up-especially when they affect what athena can do.

“Really helpful for office and patients”
Pros
It's really helpful for both our office team and the patients we serve.. managing tasks on our end while giving patients clear, accessible tools. And scheduling with it is pretty easy which cuts down on phone tag and confusion for everyone. It feels like it genuinely supports the flow of care not complicate it.
Cons
From my experience there is nothing about it that I dislike as everything seems to run smoothly.

“patient chart everything in one place”
Pros
Having everything living inside the patient chart has made the workflow noticeably simpler for us.
Cons
We know this is available but we haven't chosen to add it on. The bigger frustration is that we've had to redo medical billing work AthenaOne's team handled incorrectly according to our state governance requirements.

“Billing errors cost us money”
Pros
At first, I thought it was more user-friendly. It seemed like it had a lot of potential.
Cons
We have so many issues trying to bill claims. I've found that Athena users are just writing off claims without even letting us try to fix them first, which is costing our organization a lot of money.

“A huge time-saver for a solo practice”
Pros
Athena saves me so much time with my daily patient care and running the office. So many features are set up to save me time and a lot of tasks only take a few clicks like sending prescriptions, referrals and faxing right from the system. Plus a ton of the patient check-in, reminders and scheduling is automated which is a lifesaver since I run my practice without any staff.
Cons
I wish there were more ways to customize things for my boutique practice. There are a lot of areas you can tweak but some of the messages patients see are locked in. I'd love more options for that. Also, I'd like better communication from them about when they're going to fix coding bugs that affect how it works.

“Easy charts, frustrating billing fixes”
Pros
I love how easy it is that everything is right inside the patient's chart.
Cons
I know it's an option we didn't choose but it's frustrating that we have to re-do medical billing work that AthenaOne's team did incorrectly, especially when it goes against our state's rules.

“Excellent software”
Pros
Athena runs a real "skin in the game" setup, where their performance directly affects what they get paid. Startup costs ended up being negligible and the first year looked strong, with solid ongoing support too. The team also genuinely engages with us-employees stick around to help us succeed and keep growing.
Cons
For a few services, we've had to rely on third-party vendors that we expected Athena to handle internally and the extra cost that comes with that isn't ideal.

Pros
We're really happy with all the features AthenaOne offers-there's a lot included that we've been taking advantage of since day one.

“and all-in-one patient tool”
Pros
The app feels adaptive to navigate and it's simple to use day to day. Having everything in one product is a big win especially since it brings all the needed features together in one place.
Cons
The medical history section's format could be improved and the patient self-check answers don't match up with what's recorded in the history which is a bit confusing.
