Proactive and hands-on healthcare partner

Pros

What I really like about athenahealth is how proactive they are in keeping up with changes in the healthcare landscape so our practice stays current with things like ICD-10. I am also grateful that they're so hands-on and genuinely committed to helping medical practices organize office workflows to handle these updates head-on, without the worry of being left stranded when it comes to timely payments. I even value the strong support network they provide as the CSC team is always available to take my calls or read my questions and dig up the answers for me. To be honest I rarely have the time to comb through the knowledge base and training videos myself although those resources are great for anyone who has the bandwidth so having a reliable support team behind me is a huge relief. Another thing I like is that it makes it simple to share patients medical information, with their consent, to other practices and hospitals because continuity of care is the most important part of this service ecosystem. Finally I appreciate how mindful this tool is about striking the right balance between helping a practice thrive and not overstepping their role or stepping on anyone's toes.

Cons

Lately when I use the portal to post non-urgent questions, I have noticed the response times can stretch to more than two weeks. It used to be that turnaround was about seven days or less so waiting this long means I often forget the exact details of my original question and have to go back and reread my notes to pick up the thread again. I have also read several other posts about long wait times and being put on hold for extended periods. When we first started with athenahealth, I didn't run into this and I was calling in frequentlyassometimes ten times a dayasfor a while. Nowadays I call much less often and thankfully I haven't been kept on hold for more than five minutes recently. Still, I do appreciate knowing I can call when something is urgent and get immediate help when it really matters.

Easy

Pros

The system isn’t overwhelming at all. The layouts are really great and pleasant to look at. It is easy to use and navigate through. The chart navigation is easy as well.

Cons

There are times when my charting doesn’t save due to “no clicking” on another portion of the chart. But this is something that rarely happens.

easy to use with regular updates

Pros

This is easy for me to use. The regular updates let me be more productive. Tutorials are helpful and there's a large library of articles I check for answers.

Cons

I occasionally experience delays before glitches or problems are fixed which can be frustrating when I need immediate help.

a fix for almost any practice challenge

Pros

Athena provides a fix for almost any challenge a practice faces. Whether it's handling claims, billing and collections or maintaining electronic health records, Athena touches every part of practice management. After I set it up in several practices I worked with, those offices experienced a significant boost in revenue and overall profitability.

Cons

In my experience the cost is pretty steep. It can be tough to justify the investment for smaller or brand-new practices that are still finding their feet. You pretty much need to be an established practice thinking about switching over because starting out on this system before you know your income can be a risky move.

Unreliable reports

Pros

Factsheet demonstrates the majority of the relevant data on every patient before an experience is open. For whatever length of time that the clinical staff has refreshed the graph effectively.

Cons

The concept of having to "vote" for improvements to be made is terrible. They have failed miserably to create a customizable practice EHR system. Changes occurred in November to the UDS reporting capacity. Reports for clinical information were a wreck, preposterous, and full of errors. They need much help with composing the rationale in their reporting criteria. I have utilized this EMR for 5 years in the front office. back office, the board, and reports. There are such a large number of workarounds for the suppliers and care staff. Their rationale in reports is crazy. The information does not pull precisely. Customer support may as well be non-existent. ACO and UDS are supposed to be logical but Athena reports work on a logic of their own and pull out data that is far from accurate I would suggest any FQHC that needs to report data to CCPM, ACO or HRSA to never use this software.

excellent hands-on training, price went up

Pros

I used Athena for about two years and found it excellent for hands-on training during go-live support.

Cons

After the first year I experienced a drop-off in training availability and then the subscription price went up.

Athena review

Pros

Athena was my first experience with an EMR when transitioning from paper charts. Although there was a steep learning curve the expertise of a well-trained hospital employee helped us successfully navigate the transition. It initially slowed us down but our notes and billing significantly improved.

Cons

I wish there was the option to open two windows at once as other EMRs allow. One reason I would not recommend this system is because they were unable to assist us in merging charts from one Athena chart to another when our hospital was acquired by another system. We were forced to change our Tin number and Athena couldn't carry over essential information such as consults lab trends and imaging reports making the transition difficult. This lack of flexibility raises concerns especially in the constantly changing medical environment with frequent acquisitions. It has been a complete disaster for me and everyone I know in our medical group.

Great software needs support

Pros

Specifically designed for the medical billing and EHR community offering a comprehensive set of features to assist with new regulations.

Cons

Customer support is lacking and the billing staff lacks knowledge. Dealing with claims rules and holds is burdensome and not handled by trained AR or RCM staff.

Limited features and no portal scheduling

Pros

athenaOne is really easy to navigate and I like its clean, attractive interface.

Cons

I have noticed the platform is more limited than other patient-management systems I have worked with. The reporting and messaging tools don't feel as powerful or flexible as in competing products and frustratingly there isn't an option for patients to schedule appointments directly through the portal.

User-friendly with self-paced training

Pros

I find it really user-friendly and what I especially appreciate is that they offer self-paced training modules for anyone who wants to jump in and learn independently.

Cons

There are times when I get frustrated because patient payments end up posted to the wrong account or they get split and applied across different service dates which makes things really hard to follow and awkward when I have to explain the situation to the patient.

Very user-friendly

Pros

Athena is very user-friendly. Every interface and module is easy to navigate, even when you are not used to the system. For me it performs well both for clinical workflows and for handling financial tasks.

Cons

Not much that I dislike but the delay when opening and modifying reports can be somewhat annoying. I also wish the reporting tools were more powerful so larger datasets could be analyzed quickly because right now it can take longer than I'd like to process a significant amount of information.

Helps with billing but not with clinical aspects

Pros

During my internship with a primary care physician I had the opportunity to become familiar with this software. It proved to be immensely helpful in terms of billing aiding both the doctor and the administrative assistant in tracking patient payments. The billing aspect was easy to use and the data was well-organized streamlining the process.

Cons

The software is confusing and not intuitive. It lags frequently and customer service is unresponsive.

easy navigation

Pros

What I really like about Athena Health is how easy it is to navigate. As it makes moving from one part of a patient's record to another feel smooth and it also eases the transition from our previous EMR/EHR system.

Cons

I wish more clinics nearby used Athena Health because so few of them are familiar with it. this isn't the vendor's problem as it's just that where I practice, Medford or, overwhelmingly favors EPIC so Athena hasn't taken hold and as a result it's rare to find colleagues who can offer support or swap tips about workflows.

3.0

No value for money

Pros

The only pro is that you can opt out of the billing portion, as I believe that paying 8% of your bill is a complete rip-off. I now save $2,500 per month by not using Athena billing. It may have a system which works but you need to have the know-how of ‘computer engineer speak’ to be able to run it.

Cons

The software developers who designed Athena seem to be unfamiliar with the medical language. You have to learn ‘Computer engineer-speak’ to use Athena and that hampers the use of this software. Truth be told, Athena made me detest practicing medicine for about 3 years, but now that all the information is in, and I understand how their system works, its much easier. My salary is also back to where it was pre-Athena.

Functionality is prime for Athena

Pros

I think that Athena is a good software due to its functionality and its ease of use. There are also great videos uploaded into the system that really helped me to use Athena software. For a mid-range company, the software helped us in streamlining our work. Truly, it has changed the way work was being done in our industry.

Cons

The only con to this software is that nothing really stands out. Athena can use an upgrade where they are able to make the user interface friendlier and more accessible. However, overall it is a great product and can be better if some amendments are made.

Incredibly simple with helpful visuals

Pros

The system is incredibly simple to use and I like how easy it is to pull up a patient's record using date of birth, last name or the unique ID that athena assigns to each file. I also find the ability to visualize trends in a patient's vital signs really helpful for judging whether their care plan is working or if I should consider switching them to a different approach.

Cons

It frustrated me how long it took to become fully proficient. the training and hands-on practice required to understand and use it efficiently took me about a month before I felt comfortable.
