Athena EMR

Pros

Patient data entry is straightforward and I appreciate the tab that reminds me of meaningful use requirements. It's also great for maximizing billable services.

Cons

It's inconvenient that you can't have the patient's chart open while keeping the daily schedule visible for tracking patient arrivals.

Pros

Coordinating becomes pretty easy with Athena as it makes organizing and syncing tasks much simpler for me.

Cons

Not sure if it's a privacy setting but I find myself having to reset my password far more often than I'd like.

4.0

Go-to system for scheduling and billing

Pros

I work in a number of physician practices where it is the go-to system. It handles scheduling patient visits and checking them in really well. I also rely on it for billing patients and taking copays. The web interface is user-friendly and makes everything pretty simple for our office staff, nurses and physicians.

Cons

Overall it is a great application but the problems I face are almost exclusively related to the hardware that runs through it. Occasionally, I see failures connecting to card readers and document scanners. The Athena Device Manager needs periodic updates as without them those peripherals won't pair. Coordinating those updates across thousands of users becomes a major administrative task.

helpful help section

Pros

athenaOne is so user-friendly that almost anyone can use it and I really like the help section for when I run into a problem and need guidance.

Cons

What frustrates me is that each time I open it, it takes ages to load and will occasionally boot me out, forcing me to restart the app.

User friendly and stress reducing

Pros

I am impressed with how user friendly and simple it is to use. Working with it is genuinely enjoyable and it significantly eases managing our patients care, reducing a lot of stress.

Cons

One thing I wish could be simpler is editing the provider choices on orders and modifying the notes attached to patient cases more easily. These are the two major problems I keep facing, as they slow down our workflow and impact timeliness.

User-friendly with multiple schedules

Pros

One thing I really like is how user-friendly and fairly simple the system is. It lets me set up multiple schedules for different doctors and locations which makes managing shifts much simpler. It is also easy to scan, upload and keep paperwork organized. The platform supports several users at once and multiple open screens so I can multitask the way we often have to throughout the day. And I love that you can attach a photo to each patient's file so it shows during check-in. That visual cue is a great reassurance when we are dealing with high patient volumes. I also find the capture app handy for uploading patient insurance details and insurance cards.

Cons

I really dislike athenafax. I am never confident it actually sends and faxes seem to go missing all the time. Lately it feels like it's improved a bit over the past few weeks but reliable faxing remains crucial for our work so this is still a big concern. Another thing that bugs me is the number of unnecessary clicks required just to check a patient in. When the office gets busy, speed at check-in matters a lot and those extra steps slow us down. It would help if clinicians in the exam rooms could complete check-in for a patient in case someone slips through the initial process because it frustrates both the providers and the front desk staff when it doesn't happen.

Structured to follow the whole visit

Pros

When I use Athena Health in a clinical setting, I appreciate that the EHR is structured to follow the entire patient visit from the moment someone is registered to the point they leave the clinic. The platform supports multiple clinicians at once as I can pull up a colleague's or my own list of patients and as people present to the clinic their arrival time is logged so I can immediately see who has been waiting longest and adjust my schedule accordingly. When I open an encounter, everything is laid out in simple, clearly labeled tabs down the left side which makes it quick for me to scan through histories, medications and recent notes. I find the pull-out behavior especially handy. those tabs layer over the main patient view rather than replacing it so if I am in the middle of composing a note and need to glance at labs or prior documentation I don't lose my draft. The system preserves what I have written until I slide the tab back and that small detail keeps my workflow smooth during hectic clinic sessions, cutting down on interruptions and rework.

Cons

One consistent pain point is that the assessment and plan section is tied to ICD codes which don't always map neatly to the choices I want to make. I have also noticed the search can box clinicians into very basic codes, even when a more specific diagnosis is clearly documented elsewhere in the chart. This often forces me to click the diagnosis entry multiple times until the system finally accepts a matching ICD code. It is frustrating because some of those extra details are not always obvious or available at the time making the process feel slow and complex rather than user friendly.

Simplifies technology but quite expensive

Pros

This program is good because it simplifies the technology side of an EHR making it easier to use. It's pretty efficient!

Cons

In my experience it is quite expensive but ends up paying off over time. The charts are long and require lots of scrolling which wastes time.

Simple quick-links and built-in chat

Pros

I really appreciate the simple quick-links down the left side. Those shortcuts make navigation easier. I also enjoy the built-in chat since it lets me reach our providers and staff quickly and easily.

Cons

For me the reports filter is confusing and could really use some tweaking. It takes multiple screens to narrow what I am searching for.

Worst EHR Imaginable to a Physician

Pros

Certain sections are well-organized with easy management of INR and useful growth charts with calculated percentages. External screening questionnaires and meaningful use are implemented effectively. Auto-texts and templates can be created.

Cons

Athena is the epitome of glitchiness. It presents numerous issues such as text formatting problems superimposed text transferring to the next screen failure to scroll properly resulting in jumbled paragraphs poor copy-paste functionality small view screens stubborn dragging and sorting of ICD diagnosis code boxes frequent slowdowns freezes and sudden crashes that fail to save work. The system even uses severely outdated terminology for certain medical diagnoses making it difficult to find common diseases in the search feature. The medication refill system is abysmal taking an unreasonable amount of time ranging from 3 to 15 minutes to address a single refill request. It's incredibly challenging to determine whether a prescription has been filled or not. The medication lists are an absolute mess. The inclusion of a "Medicare monthly order form" as a medication that needs to be reconciled is baffling. Shockingly the system even allows unwittingly prescribing controlled substances under other doctors' names without their consent. It poorly interfaces with external labs pharmacies hospitals and other clinics lacking effective communication. It demands excessive daily hands-on maintenance making it unsustainable for a busy practice. The most frustrating aspect is the complete lack of helpful customer or IT support. Even when an Athena clinical trainer attempted to assist they proved incapable of providing effective solutions spending the whole week fiddling on their computer without offering any real help.

Brings high quality to the forefront

Pros

Athena is brilliant in the sense that it has allowed me to connect with my patients, generating a higher quality service. I feel that the integration of the health network into this personalized service platform has really helped me make my practice better.

Cons

It would be great to be able to integrate more services in the platform such as laboratories, diagnostic centers, and pharmaceutical industries so that there’s a complete information network with optimal quality care. I feel if Athena developers can look into this, it will make it a much bigger and popular software.

Pros

We found it easy to implement, learn and use in our daily workflow. We didn’t need to make a lot of changes in our workflow to fully adapt Athena

Cons

The add on software like the label printer or document printer tend to stop working. You have to restart the program in order to get them working again. It happens rarely so not complaining much.
