“User Friendly”
Pros
AthenaOne frequently updates to stay ahead of the constant changes in healthcare. They provide training information at each step of the way. The best feature is the live chat function, which allows access to real-time assistance and troubleshooting.
Cons
It takes some time to adjust to the process of working claims on the back end.

“Frustrating!!!”
Pros
The Legacy system is the only part of this system that I like and consistently use. It's satisfactory, but instead of addressing the issues we've requested to be fixed, they are getting rid of it.
Cons
Where do I begin? The community aspect used for communication with other users is only helpful if Athena values your input. If you're not praising them, they disregard your comments and concerns. They merge or delete complaints about their new user interface (UI) and implement a system that doesn't work without seeking user opinions. Moreover, their new system lacks user-friendliness. They prefer blocking you from commenting and expressing concerns rather than accepting criticism of a flawed system on the community page. On top of that, they respond with the same scripted answers that don't address your questions or concerns and redirect you to their development team, who then provides another scripted response. Not to mention the number of unresolved concerns and complaints in the name of "modernity" or how their 'help' section fails to answer most questions and instead provides links to useless videos and threads. It's truly embarrassing. Needless to say, it's wiser to invest in a company that values user opinions, implements a functional UI, and provides satisfactory answers.

“Billing hiccups and A/R headaches”
Pros
The billing side of things is fairly easy to use and to train new people on. The navigation is alright but I wish there were a few more shortcuts to make it faster.
Cons
You're paying for both the program and for athena employees to work on your claims. Honestly, I don't think they have the skills or knowledge to effectively manage our accounts receivable.

I like how easy the system is to use and the learning modules were really helpful.

“Updates and support are excellent”
Pros
AthenaOne is always doing updates to keep up with changes in healthcare. They also provide training info every step of the way. My absolute favorite feature is the live chat and I can get help or troubleshoot any issue right on the spot.
Cons
The process of working claims on the back end takes some getting used to.

“Poor system!”
Pros
Honestly the only part of this system I like and use all the time is the Legacy system. It's alright but they're planning to get rid of it instead of fixing the issues we've been asking them to improve.
Cons
Where do I even start? The user community forum feels helpful only when Athena decides your voice matters. Unless you're praising them, they don't seem to care about your comments. They'll merge or delete complaints, especially about their new interface and they never asked us for our opinions before rolling out a system that just doesn't work. And the new system isn't even user-friendly! They'd rather block you from commenting than accept criticism. On top of that, their support just sends you the same scripted response that doesn't answer your question, then tells you to send complaints to their development team, who just send another script. So many problems go unsolved in the name of being "modern," and their help section is useless and it just links to videos and threads that didn't answer the question the first time. It's embarrassing. You're better off spending your money on a company that actually listens to its users.

“excellent customization and easy sharing”
Pros
To be honest I am really pleased with it as the customization options are excellent and tasks can be shared or reassigned without a problem. The access tracking is also outstanding and patients find the platform accessible and easy to understand. Overall we have been satisfied in every manner with this system.
Cons
Like any EMR it takes considerable time to get comfortable with all its features. Fortunately in my experience the learning curve here is much gentler compared to many other systems and feels similar to other Athena offerings. Moreover moving a practice from paper to Cerner feels like Olympic-level effort, whereas moving from paper to AthenaOne felt more like competing at high school state championships.

“great emr, terrible onboarding”
Pros
The actual EMR is really well designed and it's one of the best out there. The workflows and order sets they have make it super easy to use.
Cons
I liked the Athena EMR itself but I really didn't like the AthenaOne package. The onboarding process and their corporate policies were a problem. They told us onboarding would take 3 months but we had these weekly meetings with their reps that weren't helpful at all. My staff and I did all the required tasks which felt like a lot, outside of those meetings. But after 5 months, it was still incomplete because their team hadn't done their part. When we asked about the delays, they just gave us corporate excuses and tried to make it seem like it was our fault. For a small practice like mine, there's no reason it should take that long. I've used Athena in other places and they seem to do a poor job submitting claims. I think most practices lose money if they rely on it for that.

“Really helpful for office and patients”
Pros
It's really helpful for both our office team and the patients we serve.. managing tasks on our end while giving patients clear, accessible tools. And scheduling with it is pretty easy which cuts down on phone tag and confusion for everyone. It feels like it genuinely supports the flow of care not complicate it.
Cons
From my experience there is nothing about it that I dislike as everything seems to run smoothly.

“Billing errors cost us money”
Pros
At first, I thought it was more user-friendly. It seemed like it had a lot of potential.
Cons
We have so many issues trying to bill claims. I've found that Athena users are just writing off claims without even letting us try to fix them first, which is costing our organization a lot of money.

“A huge time-saver for a solo practice”
Pros
Athena saves me so much time with my daily patient care and running the office. So many features are set up to save me time and a lot of tasks only take a few clicks like sending prescriptions, referrals and faxing right from the system. Plus a ton of the patient check-in, reminders and scheduling is automated which is a lifesaver since I run my practice without any staff.
Cons
I wish there were more ways to customize things for my boutique practice. There are a lot of areas you can tweak but some of the messages patients see are locked in. I'd love more options for that. Also, I'd like better communication from them about when they're going to fix coding bugs that affect how it works.

“Easy charts, frustrating billing fixes”
Pros
I love how easy it is that everything is right inside the patient's chart.
Cons
I know it's an option we didn't choose but it's frustrating that we have to re-do medical billing work that AthenaOne's team did incorrectly, especially when it goes against our state's rules.

“Think of your Best Hire - that's Athena”
Pros
Athena follows a true "Skin in the game" model where their performance directly affects their payment. The startup costs are minimal and they provide excellent support and engagement to ensure success and growth.
Cons
We've had to rely on third-party vendors for certain services that we feel Athena should be able to provide resulting in additional costs that are not ideal.
