Epic is the first EMR Ive used since ACA implementation. Its customizable features and easy navigation make documentation and billing straightforward.

One feature I really loved was being able to keep multiple patient screens open simultaneously like I am pretty sure up to five at once which made it easy to switch between five different patients and the blue-and-yellow color scheme was gentle on my eyes.

I felt the interface was a bit outdated for modern software and I couldn't make payments directly through the site which forced me to enter payment information elsewhere.

Pros

With so many personalization options, I can tailor Epic to fit how I work, making my account much more effective for my specific workflow and needs.

As a therapy student who required my supervisor to co-sign my notes, I found learning to use the system fairly tricky. Eventually my supervisor and I worked out a workflow that satisfied the facility's requirements but the whole process remained rather inefficient. It took a lot of trial and error before we landed on a method that met documentation standards.

“Personalize smart phrases for smoother workflow

I really like how I can personalize so many things in Epic such as using smart phrases, phrase sets, dot-phrases and my frequently used orders makes my workflow so much smoother and faster on a regular basis.

Cons

At times, I find Epic can be so feature-rich that staying on top of all the updates becomes challenging. I have found that taking Epic training classes helps me bridge that gap and makes those transitions manageable.

“Everything consolidated in a single platform

Pros

One thing I really like is having everything consolidated in a single platform. For example, I can pull up medical records, communicate with patients, reach out to other providers and review multiple face notes from different clinicians.

Cons

I get that it's HIPAA compliant but I find it frustrating to have to sign out and sign back in every single time which interrupts my workflow and gets a bit tiresome.

“User friendly with excellent iphone app

Pros

I am genuinely impressed with how user-friendly the system is overall. After I created a set of personal templates it became extremely quick and effortless to produce a detailed, high-quality note that captured meaningful information rather than filler. I mostly use it in the nursery setting and the iPhone app in particular stands out as the best EMR app I have worked with. It signs me in very fast and puts most of the tools we rely on right at my fingertips. The only real limitation I have found with the mobile app is that I cannot place orders from it which is the one thing I wish it could do.

Cons

When it came time to tweak settings to my liking, I discovered that while using the software is easy once it's customized, doing the customizing yourself feels like you need a software engineering degree. Luckily I had colleagues help during implementation to tailor it exactly as I wanted. Without that assistance, I would find it hard to make changes on my own if a need arose.

Pros

The system is so easy to use and genuinely user-friendly. I find it helpful that it gives several different ways to accomplish the same task which fits varying learning styles and individual preferences. For instance I can advance using the space bar, arrow keys or my mouse.

Cons

In the acute care setting, I find the software gets pretty chaotic when multiple disciplines come into play. There are lots of overlapping flowcharts and duplicated data and the layout makes it easy for me to accidentally enter information into someone else's note or flowsheet if I am not paying close attention.
