ModMed is the goods for ophthalmology practices

Pros

As a state-of-the-art eye clinic in Madison, we needed an affordable EMR service to automate our clinic; frankly because due to staff shortage are rising location overheads, we had to rely on tech to get the job done. ModMed, since we signed up in Jan 2022, hasn’t disappointed for the most part. The patient scheduling feature is the best; we’ve been able to drive a lot of our revenue during COVID with telemedicine on it.

Cons

Onboarding was a little difficult at first; it did take us a good two weeks to learn it properly (but it’s paid off, so not a lot to worry about).

Useful functions and user-friendly software

Pros

The customer support service of Modernizing Medicine EHR Software is great. It enables us to practice paper free. E-prescribing is HIPAA compliant.

Cons

Claim generation has been a bone of contention for our practice. We have identified errors in automatic claims generated through the system.

Pays attention to customer feedback

Pros

I feel this company actually pays attention to customer feedback and is dedicated to delivering one of the top products available. Their advanced technology makes it easier for my practice to manage everyday tasks. I notice the EMR and practice management parts work together without any hiccups. Plus, they're always pushing to refine an already strong product. My sense is their dedication to the medical field is unmatched.

Cons

I find the support hold times are longer than I'd like and could use improvement.

Pros

Great audit logs and mips advising

Pros

Having switched from another EMR, the Audit Logs within Firm Admin quickly stood out as my favorite feature. With the previous system we had almost no ability to track activity, so this added visibility has been a huge upgrade for us. Another feature I really rely on is MIPS Advising and I would strongly encourage every ModMed client to invest in that service. Having someone who truly understands the reimbursement program's ins and outs is a major selling point. They provide our practice with clear guidance about what needs to be done and how to report properly and they also help troubleshoot and resolve any reporting issues that arise. Because of their support, our practice has reached a comfort level with MIPS that felt out of reach before and it's made a real difference in our day-to-day operations and compliance confidence.

Cons

There are a few workflows and the way ModMed prioritizes issue resolution that I am not thrilled about. For example, we've experienced a persistent problem where the system ends up un-enabling the kiosk which disrupts check-in processes. Another frustrating issue is the tracking for who links a faxed document to a patient's chart as the system records the action as being done by the user System, Builtin when in reality one of our staff members attached the file. Our practice has already contacted support and our account manager about both of these problems but we still don't have a fix. It feels like these are treated as low-priority issues, even though they affect every practice using the kiosk, online check-in and the fax drive for incoming faxes and I wish ModMed would acknowledge the broader impact and move these to resolution faster.

Continually enhances user experience

Pros

I have noticed ModMed continually looks for ways to enhance the user experience. Their commitment to customer service is great too as support agents are friendly and efficient. That level of attention feels uncommon these days and I am really happy to be using their services right now.

Cons

Honestly I cannot point to any real drawback with ModMed. When a solution isn't available right away, I am consistently kept informed and told when one will be provided, so I never feel left out of the process.

Clinic handles everything from booking

Pros

it's easy to use but I find the interface a bit click-happy. I appreciate that our clinic can handle everything from booking appointments and processing payments to integrating pathology results from our lab. The reporting side leaves something to be desired. There are very few reports and they lack the depth or specific data our practice relies on for day-to-day operations. I wish the patient portal offered more features.

Cons

As mentioned above, what I dislike is that the analytics are weak. There are very limited reports and they don't provide the level of detail our practice needs for everyday operations. I'd also like the patient portal to be more powerful and offer additional functionality now.

Committed to pushing medicine forward

Pros

From my perspective, the company genuinely seems committed to pushing medicine forward and improving patient care. I am really impressed that they're addressing the frustrating pain points of electronic medical records instead of simply accepting the industry's glass ceiling the way most other vendors do.

Cons

The communities page is not woven into the main platform which drives me nuts. I end up wasting far too much time managing multiple logins, resetting passwords and dealing with locked-out staff. I mean this whole experience needs to be integrated into one simple system.

Super simple navigation saves time

Pros

I have found ModMed super simple to navigate which really cuts down the pain of note-taking and saves me a ton of time.

Cons

In my experience the system overall feels a bit quirky and most of the time the support team is not very helpful, so I end up troubleshooting issues myself. Also there are numerous features that aren't obvious so I had to learn many of them on my own or stumble upon them by accident to discover they exist.

Simple system for client management

Pros

Using ModMed, I really appreciate how simple it is to move around the system and the way it lets me effectively manage and care for my clients through the software.

Cons

Game-changer for practice communication

Pros

Our clinic moved away from paper charts and Mod Med has saved us an enormous amount of time! From the standpoint of practice communication, it has been a game-changer as we can attach patient charts to notes and keep communication flowing even when team members are out of the office. I'd strongly suggest it to any ophthalmology practice.

Cons

I find they show little enthusiasm for implementing optometry-specific updates, like features for contact lenses.

Big fans of mips support

Pros

We're big fans of MIPS! Our advisor Darlene is amazing and the support staff are extremely well trained.

Cons

I have noticed the G reminder seems to have problems with timing and doesn't always provide patients with the right information.

Useful kiosks and detailed walkthroughs

Pros

The kiosks and round-table sessions were incredibly useful and I appreciated that. I also really enjoyed the detailed walkthrough of how inventory management operates. Plus, I like how the entire convention is put together.

Cons

I really hated how the majority of my pre-conference sessions turned out. There were so many in-depth questions that belonged at support desks or in round tables, plus people used the time to unload their personal issues, so the instructors didn't get through all the planned material. It was incredibly frustrating given how much I paid for the pre-conference.

Specialty-focused ehr simplifies practice

Pros

I find the specialty-focused EHR really simplifies practicing medicine and the conference shares a ton of valuable, wide-ranging information.

Cons

We don't have many complaints about the software or the conference overall, though I wish the sessions and product could run a bit more smoothly and efficiently at times since I know there are plenty of upcoming changes. It would also be great to see more of our enhancement requests actually implemented.

Easy insurance payments, overwhelming and fragmented

Pros

After roughly ninety days with ModMed, I am starting to get comfortable with it and I really like how easy it is to record insurance payments once you get the hang of the workflow.

Cons

I am finding ModMed somewhat overwhelming because there are so many features and I often feel like I am barely scratching the surface of what it can do. The Communities section has been somewhat useful but again it's packed with content and can be hard to navigate. I also don't like having separate logins for sandbox, ModMed EMA Practice and admin as juggling multiple accounts is frustrating. In my view, it would be much better if everything were integrated and the office manager could control who gets access to the specific modules each person needs.

Pleasant and helpful support

Pros

When I reach out, the support team is consistently pleasant and happy to answer every one of our questions.
