“good but difficult to edit
Pros
NextGen is pretty user friendly and since the workflow can be adjusted, I can draft notes exactly the way I prefer.
Cons
I find it difficult to make edits after an item has been added to the chart and sometimes the system allows me to skip sections without realizing it.

“Overall a very good EHR.
Pros
Key tasks in clinical medicine such as charting office visits documenting phone encounters assigning tasks to staff ordering referrals and e-prescribing medications are relatively easy to perform. Customizing templates and documents is also straightforward.
Cons
Our hosted experience has been somewhat disappointing with intermittent performance lags and frequent service drops for interfaces faxes and offline document generation.

“Steer clear of this software.
Pros
Web-based and compatible with various devices like iPads and Windows. iPad-friendly with easy electronic prescription sending capabilities.
Cons
Looking up diagnoses can be difficult and adding medical/surgical history or problem lists is cumbersome. The software makes scheduling and billing more challenging instead of easier. Reconciling labs is cumbersome and viewing labs and documents can be problematic. There are numerous other shortcomings as well.

“Gotten worse since NextGen took over
Pros
It offers a range of advanced features including robust reporting capabilities. The customer support staff is friendly and helpful.
Cons
Customer support has declined since NextGen took over and they have removed features that initially attracted us to the software such as Live Chat support.

“Great customer support program can be improved greatly.
Pros
The software is user-friendly and it is not difficult to grasp its functionalities. It is a robust product with great potential.
Cons
It requires too many mouse clicks to accomplish tasks. The lack of internal communication between the EPM side and the EHR side is problematic. The software is prone to glitches frequently locking up and slowing down.

“It is very good and user friendly software
Pros
The reporting module and front-end menus are easily understandable and column customization is possible. Customized reports can be memorized.
Cons
It may be a bit costly but it's worth considering for larger practices. However there is room for improvement in the billing and posting transactions as there have been occasional issues.

“System lacks functionality comparable to other programs on the market.
Pros
Utilizing the available reports has proven to be beneficial both financially and in terms of organizational time management.
Cons
The wait time for tech support ranges from 30 to 65 minutes and the option for phone call returns has been unsuccessful. The system goes down frequently for maintenance. In the scheduling feature you can only view one month at a time and there is no partial roll-over to the following month.

“Very Powerful software with good reporting capabilities
Pros
A great software application often comes with complexity and NextGen is no exception. It offers an array of features that require time to fully explore and utilize their maximum potential. Unfortunately some users may overlook these features and end up spending extra time on tasks that could have been easier. Following the recommended guidelines should lead to satisfactory results.
Cons
The Patient Portal needs improvement as it is not web compatible and requires application software for each client. The complex structure can cause speed issues due to the convergence of all roads leading into NextGen. It would be beneficial if NextGen supported a wider range of third-party integrations especially with more hardware and software options.

“Interlinked but Visually Outdated
Pros
What I appreciate is that all parts of the system are interlinked, allowing me to tie billing, scheduling and the medical record together.
Cons
I'd like the EHR's visual/interface elements to be designed more thoughtfully.

“Many features but poor integration
Pros
I have noticed it offers many of the standard EMR features and includes customizable options.
Cons
it isn't very well integrated as medical assistants have a separate intake window while providers work in a different SOAP note screen.

“Really easy and well organized
Pros
I have found it really easy to use, simple to navigate through and overall very well organized.
Cons
That said, I find it easy to make mistakes and I wish the color-coded appointments were more distinct.

“Effective across many settings
Pros
NextGen runs effectively across a wide range of healthcare settings. For example I have used it both in a surgical center and within an ophthalmology clinic.
Cons
What I don't like is that I cannot increase the size of the icons or the font even a little which would make everything easier for me to read.

“offer range of features but complex
Pros
I find NextGen offers a wide range of customizable features that let me tailor the system to my needs.
Cons
It is overly complicated and because it's so advanced, even simple tasks like scheduling an appointment end up requiring far too many steps.

“not at all user-friendly
Pros
One thing I really appreciate about the system is its templates and how I can recreate and tailor my own customized templates.
Cons
The interface is lacking in user-friendliness. In short it is not particularly simple or easy for me to navigate.

“Terrible UI with missing therapy guidance
Pros
Honestly I have very little to praise. It's only slightly better than writing all my notes.
Cons
I find myself clicking a million times to complete each note and the user interface is terrible. I also notice it completely lacks ROM instructions for the wrist and hand and omits strength guidance for every joint. I basically have to type everything and the therapy wording syntax is wrong.

“The windows xp of healthcare apps
Pros
To me it feels like the Windows XP of healthcare apps. As I find it pretty simple to learn, easy to move around and it has clear menus and a usable interface.
Cons
Sometimes it can be sluggish and I feel it looks a bit dated when compared with newer software offerings.

“Easy, quick but gets slowed down
Pros
the interface is easy to use, the system runs quickly, it's regularly updated and I can customize it to fit our practice's needs.
Cons
Sometimes newer releases add extra panels I have to click through and I notice that this occasionally slows down processing.

“Highly customizable daily workflows
Pros
I really appreciate the way it lets me customize file maintenance and my daily workflows so they fit our practice.
Cons
One drawback I run into is that not every report includes all the filtering options I rely on which can be annoying.

“Forced into a backwards workflow
Pros
I have found a few genuine time-savers, such as being able to press a button that has the charge page automatically adjust our timed units for Medicare billing. Another feature I appreciate is the flow sheet that carries exercises forward from one session to the next, saving me from re-entering the same activities each visit.
Cons
Honestly this system forces me through an absurd number of clicks before I can finish almost anything and it drives the workflow into separate pages for tasks that should be together. It actually ends up being quicker to finish a note using the shortcuts on the charge page, even though that clearly isn't the intended workflow which tells me the design feels backwards. Also, I get frustrated that I cannot have more than one chart open at once. It's a real problem in our busy PT clinic where I am often juggling several patients at the same time. The exercise flow sheet is awkward too as I have to apply changes there and then still hit save and close which refreshes the whole page. So if I miss a step, the exercises won't populate onto the previewed note. I could keep listing examples but the bottom line is that these inefficiencies add up and make my job harder than it needs to be.
