Highly flexible

Pros

As a developer, I appreciate that the flexibility and on-premise installation allow our team to tailor the software to our exact specifications. It's one of the few EMR systems that lets us do that.

Cons

A major drawback I have noticed is the steep learning curve. Across the years there have been many different versions, with significant changes between them. Tracking down the right documentation for the exact version often feels tedious and eats up a lot of time.

Clear and organized payment visibility

Pros

I can easily see payments as they come in. As everything's displayed clearly and in an organized fashion.

Cons

For me, payments take a little too long to post.

Powerful and tailorable for any specialty

Pros

I have found NextGen EHR to be a powerful platform that fits virtually any medical specialty. Being able to tailor templates and documents to meet our specific requirements is truly beneficial for everyone involved. The active NextGen user community also offers helpful, practical support when I need it.

Cons

Like many EMR/practice management vendors, NextGen seems constantly focused on revenue generation. One clear example is that they charge fees for establishing interfaces with other third-party solutions which can add up for practices.

packed with excellent features

Pros

I find that it lets me move between programs which makes it much simpler for providers to revise their work overall. I appreciate that NextGen invested in Televideo and Telehealth well before COVID hit and OTTO was a truly fantastic application. The updated patient portal is really excellent as well.

Cons

I have noticed that instead of adopting a more modern GUI, NextGen hasn't overhauled its interface. It has remained unchanged for quite a long time. I think it should switch to a web-based layout with tabs to make navigation simpler and management easier. Better cross-functionality with other modules would be highly beneficial.

offers top tier US-based support

Pros

Whenever I reach out to support, I am talking with someone based in the United States who really understands how the system operates and can quickly answer my questions or resolve issues without dragging things out.

Cons

From my perspective, the payment-posting workflow definitely needs attention as there are hardly any workarounds and despite having two decades of billing experience across multiple platforms, it still took me well over a year to feel comfortable with it. The connection between the practice management PM and EHR modules could be much smoother and I'd like to see tasking added directly to the claims screen. Also, the scheduler should make it obvious who is checked in on the PM side at a glance without having to click each name and printing views from the scheduler ought to be far easier.

Simple training and excellent support

Pros

The training was simple, with helpful videos and downloadable handouts, so I never had to look anywhere else. Also their customer support was excellent. The interface feels very user friendly too, works well on a Mac and getting telemedicine up and running was extremely simple.

Cons

We would prefer a smoother way to push and sync our patient information into the state health registry, since integrating that data currently isn't as easy as we'd like.

Easy to use and highly tailorable

Pros

Net Gen is really easy to use. Following up on claims is easy and the EHR lets me tailor settings to my specialty.

Cons

Reversing or fixing payments and claims can be cumbersome at first and I don't find it smooth until I have done the steps a few times. 990oi

User friendly but slow reporting

Pros

What I like most is how user friendly it feels. As there are several different ways I can reach the same result which makes it very flexible in practice.

Cons

I am annoyed by how long it takes to generate reports as the slow reporting speed disrupts my workflow and wastes time.

Convenient all in one bundle

Pros

I like that they bundled an EHR with Practice Management, so I don't have to juggle two separate systems.

Cons

One frustrating thing for me is how often I get stuck in loops. I'll click into something and then there's no easy way to go back to where I was, so I end up having to start the entire process over again.

frustrating loops

Pros

Overall it's fairly easy to navigate as I can find or reach what I need quickly and efficiently.

Cons

I find that some fields are marked as required even though they really aren't necessary which frustrates me. The way payment, non-claim and backdated payments are handled is unclear and confusing.

Excellent community and support system

Pros

I am a big fan of NextGen's Success Community. If I run into an issue, I sign into my account and post the questions or problems I am encountering with the software. I am also able to submit ideas and suggestions for how the program could be improved.

Cons

What really frustrates me is when I cancel a patient's appointment, but it doesn't update on the provider side. The doctor still sees the encounter for that date as if the patient was seen, which causes confusion when they try to complete their notes.

One of the easiest EHRs available

Pros

To me, Next-gen is one of the easiest EHR systems I have used. I can pull up patient records quickly which is crucial and Next-gen consistently delivers on that.

Cons

Honestly the only real frustration I have with it is that finding lab results can be difficult.

Simple and tailorable across devices

Pros

whether I am on a desktop, laptop or tablet its easy to move around and the ability to tailor forms and templates is really helpful.

Cons

What frustrates me is the very limited ability to customize e-statements and it's also difficult for patients to complete online payments through the patient portal which I find inconvenient.

User friendly for records and billing

Pros

NextGen EHR system is very user friendly and it helps me ensure my patients medical records satisfy the proper standards so I capture all required elements needed for accurate billing.

Cons

Occasionally I struggle with linking nursing-home visit dictations between NextGen and our billing software, especially when those encounters happen outside a traditional office environment which makes the billing workflow more complicated.
