“Support Severely Lacking
Pros
If everything goes smoothly Gusto is fine. However Im disappointed with their support which falls short of expectations. Despite promises of US-based support its rare to speak to someone from the US. Contacting support is challenging with no available phone number or designated contact person. Lack of response on submitted tickets is unacceptable considering the impact on peoples lives. Expecting bug-free software without investing in customer support is arrogant.
Cons
I have several grievances with Gusto including limitations on payroll journal entries misinterpretation of taxable benefits and unresolved support issues. Despite spending considerable time addressing erroneous tax documents and demanding compensation Gustos handling of the situation was inadequate. Additionally they demonstrated a lack of understanding of local tax regulations further complicating matters.

“Perfect for growing businesses
Pros
Making the jump into entrepreneurship means I have to deal with a ton of unknowns, and being a small operation forces me to search for partners who can grow with me. With it I can start on a budget and slowly add more features as my business scales up.
Cons
I initially braced for the usual poor chat-only support that seems standard now, but I was pleasantly surprised to be able to book actual meetings and receive the one-on-one assistance I required.

“Saves time!!
Pros
All the background compliance tasks that used to chew up so much of my time have been made incredibly simple now. It takes care of everything from payroll to HR services, so I actually get to concentrate on expanding my business rather than being swamped by administrative paperwork. When I need assistance, their customer support is excellent, they reply quickly and give thorough explanations and more often than not they get back to me within a day.
Cons
I find it hard to get help because there's no one nearby, all support goes through remote channels and that tends to slow things down

Pros
The layout shows me everything I want to know about my pay in a very user-friendly way. The aesthetic is inviting and the communications really convey that my employer values the team. Locating salary and compensation information is quick and clear, and grabbing any needed documents for download is easy. Navigation is tidy and interactive and there are no baffling menus to wade through!
Cons
To be frank, I can't think of any negatives to point out and the platform has been excellent for everything we need it to do.

“simple, flexible with support hiccups
Pros
What impresses me is how simple payroll processing has become. The range of payment methods and the platform's features give us genuine flexibility when paying owners and employees. Getting up and running felt much easier than with other systems and it syncs with our accounting software without any hiccups. When I need assistance, support gets back to me quickly and I can reach them directly through the app. Having one partner dashboard where I can see every client and oversee my team has made day-to-day work far more efficient.
Cons
I'd really like to see more reliable vacation policy tools. There are some procedures we only complete once a year, and that makes it hard to recall the exact steps from the previous year or to tell whether the system behavior has changed. It would help to have webinars, refresher sessions, or targeted training that walk through those annual workflows so we can be better prepared. Also when I reach out to support I occasionally get conflicting guidance from different reps, so I never feel fully confident about the correct way to proceed.

“Lifesaver for new business
Pros
I have been using this for three and a half years now and truthfully it's saved my skin. Coming in with zero business background when I launched, all the admin tasks overwhelmed me. Once I connected it to my bookkeeping system, payroll takes me only a few minutes to finish. Almost everything is automated . taxes, worker's comp via their partner, holiday pay, vacation tracking, even bonuses. There are a bunch of features I rarely touch since my operation is still small but it's reassuring they're available when I need them. I've also relied on the data export tool a couple of times which was helpful. Compared to the other business apps I run, this one has been the most reliable and genuinely useful.
Cons
I don't have a lot of complaints. Because my business only runs seasonally, I hit a snag when the platform flagged me for submitting $0 payrolls . I was still doing them to keep records for workers' comp requirements. When I stopped processing payroll entirely, they warned that my account could be shut down. Customer support eventually helped me set up a process to suspend the account over the winter months, but getting to that solution was pretty confusing and I'm hoping nothing goes wrong when we re-activate. Apart from that bump in the road, the service itself has been dependable.

“Lifesaver for multi-state needs
Pros
I use this tool almost every day to handle our payroll and it's become essential for us. Onboarding new hires is incredibly smooth, and keeping their details updated is painless. What truly makes a difference is that it automatically manages payroll taxes and filings which is a lifesaver for our small company that has employees in four different states with varying tax rules. The support documentation is top-notch as well, whenever I need to act on something I get clear notifications plus step-by-step guides that are easy to follow. That extra guidance is especially valuable when we're bringing on people in states we haven't worked in before.
Cons
One area that could be improved is the QuickBooks integration. I like that I can map payroll expenses to specific accounts, but the reimbursement mapping feels too restrictive because it only allows a single account. When I'm reimbursing employees, I often need to allocate expenses across several different accounts depending on the nature of the expense. It would help a lot if I could create a list of reimbursement accounts and choose the appropriate one for each reimbursement.

Pros
Most months I barely have to touch payroll because it runs on its own, I rarely even log in. My involvement usually only comes up for reimbursements or when benefits change, otherwise it pretty much manages itself. The end-of-year obligations like producing 1099s and W-2s, are handled with minimal effort. Whenever I've reached out to support for unusual requests, I've gotten fast, helpful responses from knowledgeable reps.

Pros
The interface is incredibly user-friendly and feels modern compared to other platforms I've tried. Their customer support here is absolutely fantastic like night and day compared to what I've experienced with other payroll services.
