Pros

CosmoLex offers a dependable, all in one platform for managing both your law practice and its finances. Having billing, trust accounting and cases all integrated simplifies our work and means we don't need several different programs. Overall it is a trustworthy and user friendly system once you spend a little time learning it.

Cons

A few key features are either missing or need an upgrade. For instance the timer does not stop automatically when a clients trust account is empty which would be a huge help. The platform can also run slowly sometimes. Their support team is usually good but they have not acted on several of the suggestions we have sent in.

Pros

The built-in accounting tools are the main reason I have stayed with Cosmolex for so long. Their invoicing feature was great in the past but the latest changes have made it more complicated to use.

To me the interface feels clunky and is not easy to figure out. Also the latest update made it even worse. It is not as good as Clio, except for its accounting tools and there are so many small bugs that using it every day is a real annoyance.

It was once a strong choice for a wide range of tasks. It is still one of the only platforms that combines legal practice tools with full financial management.

My firm has been using it since around 2017. I was a big fan for years but the quality has been dropping since 2021. Now it seems like they just raise the price every year without adding any worthwhile new features for their customers.

I strongly prefer the old version. The new NextGen release feels like it was launched before it was finished. It is full of bugs. For instance, the timesheets sometimes erase information we have already put in. This has been a known problem for more than half a year with no solution making timekeeping a hassle as we often have to enter everything twice.

Cons

Their so-called Live Support Chat is a joke as it has not been live for months! You request help and get an email days later asking to schedule a call and often the person you talk to does not understand what you need or how to do it. We once needed a simple invoice for a contingency fee client to file with the court and it was a major ordeal.

My favorite aspects are the user friendly process for setting up and managing cases, the simple billing system and the ability to tag and connect emails from my inbox directly to a specific matter.

The program occasionally crashes for no reason causing us to lose all the recent changes we made to a case or the emails we were in the middle of tagging.

It's simple to operate; however, I wouldn't recommend it due to its numerous limitations.

It fails to proportionally apply payments to fees, taxes, and disbursements, which is a significant issue. CosmoLex prioritizes taxes and hard costs, meaning if invoice balances are written off, taxes can end up being overpaid, which doesn't comply with the Canadian tax act, and consequently, lawyers are underpaid. Also, the system lacks a report for client-introducing lawyers, which is common practice since most firms pay referral fees. There are also limitations on payments for multiple clients, and users with timekeeper restrictions cannot access reports. While PC Law is an older system, it had this feature, and CosmoLex is supposed to be more advanced software. As a result, just one person is responsible for generating reports for the lawyers. Furthermore, downloading reports as documents is inefficient; instead of just double-clicking on the numbers in the report to open the transaction, I have to go through more steps to locate the transaction if editing is needed. QuickBooks, being cloud-based, has this feature.

I was impressed by the sales pitch and wish the software performed as well as advertised. Invoicing and expense tracking function effectively.

Cons

The chat feature for help is often unavailable. When it does work, CosmoLex struggles to answer basic questions and usually requires someone else to follow up with me, often weeks later! Many of the tasks it's meant to accomplish either don't function properly or necessitate knowledge of "hidden" steps to complete.

Pros

CosmoLex is incredibly beneficial for a law firm, and it has become my preferred software among the various law firms I've worked with. The case management feature is excellent, and the ability to track tasks ensures that I can follow up on urgent matters promptly.
