Pros

Having it available as a developer has been really valuable because it puts everything needed for building quality code in one place. It helps a lot with managing version development timelines and the time required for code reviews since you can give access to the right people and get issues resolved much faster. It also supports cleaner code while keeping development synchronized so different tasks can be assigned to multiple team members and the project can move ahead more quickly. Another feature I really appreciate is being able to go back to the original code and make changes without worrying that others will be left with an outdated version. That saves time and helps prevent accidental overwrites which can create major problems. Also, task assignment keeps the project flowing better instead of putting all the work on one person and tracking progress is simple. In practice, this has helped my team stay coordinated and move through each task faster.

Cons

A very useful platform for developers, programmers and even students because it supports both private and public repositories and makes interaction with other developers possible. That said it does take time to fully understand how to use all of its features well. The learning curve can be fairly steep especially for someone who is just starting out.

Pros

My go-to platform for handling coding projects because it's dependable and simple to use, with very little downtime. The part I appreciate most is how flexible it is for controlling team access and handling version management. Branches and tags are especially helpful when testing changes without affecting the main application branch. Developers can open issues, submit pull requests and merge updates into whichever branch is needed. It also includes strong security options such as 2FA and Personal Access Tokens which help protect code and applications from unauthorized access. Also, GitHub offers workflows for deploying apps to servers. There are useful repository management options too, like adjusting visibility, deleting repos or archiving them when needed. Wikis are handy for documentation and teams can also start discussions around issues and feature ideas. It supports webhook integrations, lets you manage email notifications for repository activity, includes a dark mode and even provides a CLI that's very useful for handling commits and other repository operations.

Cons

At the end of the day, it's mainly a source code management platform. It would be even better if it offered a stronger built-in code editing environment similar to Visual Studio or IntelliJ. Adding features like debugging tools and syntax highlighting would make it possible to handle the full application development process in one place.

Being able to copy and adapt tools that already exist is a huge advantage, whether it's for organizational use or personal projects. There's no need to build everything from the ground up. Also, GitHub keeps the ideas flowing because the community is full of creators and builders whose work constantly sparks new inspiration.

Cons

There isn't much to dislike about it since you can shape the experience to fit how you work. That said the mobile app still feels like an area that could be improved especially with a stronger task management experience on mobile devices.

Kicking off a new project usually starts with initializing a repo on it because it makes source management really simple. I also really enjoy using GitHub Pages and the CI/CD features it provides are a big plus as well.

The only downside I've run into is the limited number of seats available for an organization.

Getting end users trained on it doesn't take much effort and the feature set is simple to understand. The product has been very stable and being able to save testing scripts locally while keeping values updated is a big plus.

Initial setup does require some knowledge of GitLab installation. In our case, we rely on an application support team to help get everything configured at the beginning.

It helps prevent a lot of the issues you might run into on your computer. You also get private items that only you can see. On public projects, there are countless services available for free and some are even proactive, warning you when the packages you use need updates or when your coding practices could be improved. Your profile also builds a picture of your habits and preferences as a programmer which is really useful both for job opportunities and for hobby projects.

I really haven't run into any major flaws. If there's one downside, it's that the platform isn't very friendly for people who don't know what it is or how to use it yet. For users who are completely new to programming, it can feel a bit complicated and there's definitely a learning curve before the website starts to make sense.

When you create a new repository, it walks you through the steps to upload your source code from your computer with just a few simple instructions. Beyond that, it offers a wide range of features, including task tracking, issue management, DevOps integration for deployments, static website hosting and plenty of other functionality. It's also highly extensible so you can connect all kinds of third-party marketplace components. Another plus is the flexibility to keep your source code private or share it publicly.

Cons

One thing that took some getting used to was the interface. Since it wasn't built with the most simple UI even checking something small like the exact date and time of a commit means hovering over another date to reveal that detail. Little things like that can make it feel challenging for beginners although it definitely gets easier as you spend more time using it.

What could make it even better is adding tips or guidance on how to use the different parts of the site. For beginners, it can feel a little intimidating when first starting out.
