“top value for coding”

Pros

This has to be one of the strongest options out there for what it does. When it comes to value for money, I honestly think you'd have a hard time finding better coding software.

Cons

Even with all its strengths, usability was the one area that held me back a bit. It took me a while to really get comfortable with it though the helpful support materials and resources did make the learning easier to manage.

“Supports complex workflow designs”

Pros

It's pipelines performed really well and it was always clear exactly where a failure was happening. They were also flexible enough to support complex workflow designs and execution without much trouble.

Cons

Documentation around workflows needs improvement because it often felt incomplete which made more complex setups harder to learn at first. Thankfully, there's a large online community to help but the docs definitely have room for improvement.

“All-in-one DevOps platform”

Pros

Love how GitLab combines code hosting, CI/CD pipelines and project management all in one place. It really makes teamwork flow smoothly.

Cons

Interface can be a bit overwhelming when you first start and some of the more advanced features have a learning curve.

“a worthy GitHub alternative”

Pros

Running this as a self-hosted alternative to GitHub has been brilliant and it even comes with some user management capabilities that GitHub is missing. The CI configuration setup is excellent as well.

Cons

There really isn't much to complain about. It was very simple to set up and use. We went with the self-hosted version though so I can't comment on the managed instances.

“Organized repositories”

Pros

This tool lets both individuals and organizations arrange repositories into hierarchical directories which I find really helpful because this is something we don't get with Forgejo or GitHub. It also includes a moderated issue tracker similar to Forgejo and unlike GitHub and that adds a lot of value.

Cons

Frustrating part of the SaaS version is that its spam detection can be overly aggressive when editing Snippets that contain a lot of content. Also, while the issue tracker is useful and there's a public forum for personal issues and it has recently scaled back the level of support its agents are expected to provide, it still doesn't offer any private, personal account support.

Pros

It's a more complete planning suite than the alternatives with more powerful features that work well for larger teams handling multiple projects. The nested groups are especially helpful for organizing teams.

Cons

Not much to complain about. It can sometimes feel a bit slow in the browser and the lack of an official mobile app is annoying.

Pros

Used this software as a total beginner while I was learning to code. It made it really easy to see my mistakes and get feedback which helped me improve quickly.

Cons

Found it tricky to learn at first and trying to figure it out while also learning to code was a lot to handle at once.

Pros

As someone new to coding and using it during my studies, this software made it very clear where I was going wrong. The feedback was really useful and helped me improve and progress much faster.

Cons

It took me some time to get comfortable with the software and trying to learn the platform while also learning to code at the same time made the whole process feel quite demanding and difficult to keep up with.

“Strong DevOps capabilities”

Pros

DevOps capabilities are great.. especially code review, collaboration tools, secure code storage and issue tracking. The open-source aspect also boosts productivity and IT practices.

Cons

Sometimes it has slowdowns and performance issues. The admin settings and UI aren't the best and its social/community aspect isn't as strong as GitHub's.

“easy version control setup”

Pros

It's simple to set up version control even in a regulated environment. We can still use pull requests and it integrates well with other tools because it follows standard protocols.

Cons

We were worried about potential authentication problems via the command line but we didn't run into any issues at all which was a relief.

“Fantastic for private team workflows”

Pros

This is the platform I've kept coming back to ever since I started my career and it has consistently worked really well for me. Even though it is similar to GitHub when it comes to the basics but it feels especially more stable in closed team environments and organizational use. The built-in CI/CD, issue tracking and permission management make collaboration feel very natural and handling private repositories is much more efficient. For internal projects and keeping workflows organized, it has remained my preferred choice.

Cons

A number of important features are reserved for the paid plans which can be tough for startups. As an example, creating a group in the free version and then only being able to add a small number of members feels restrictive when a growing team is trying to scale. In the same way, advanced branch protection rules which matter a lot for code quality and workflow control are not fully included in the free tier. I'd really like to see it provide a bit more flexibility for early-stage teams that depend on these core capabilities to build strong development practices.

“easy setup”

Pros

Setting up version control in a regulated environment was very simple. It also supports pull requests which is a big plus. Another benefit is that it integrates well with other tools because it follows the standard protocol even though it comes from a different vendor.

Cons

We really didn't run into any problems using this compared with GitHub. At first we were a little worried there could be command-line authentication issues but thankfully that never turned into a problem.

This has been the best tool I've used in a while.

Cons

Updates are offered very often which gets frustrating at times. Right when I get comfortable with how something works it changes again.

GitLab provides a single platform for the entire DevOps process from planning and CI/CD to security and monitoring. This eliminates the need for a bunch of separate tools.

Large repositories or self-hosted setups can get slow especially in the web interface or when running complex pipelines.

What I like most is how user-friendly and practical it is. It's a lifesaver for version control and managing source code.

Feel like the documentation for beginners could be better and it can feel a bit overly complex for smaller projects.

I learned CI/CD using GitLab in my DevOps class. It has so many features like CI/CD, issue tracking, great collaboration tools, customization and easy code log tracing. It's very beginner-friendly.

Cons

Lately I don't have any major complaints. Sometimes it can be very slow but I still prefer it over GitHub.

Pros

GitLab is a very comfortable DevOps application. It has integrated pipelines so you don't need external services for code releases. You can easily add documentation and the GUI is user-friendly for viewing code and YAML files.

Cons

Been using it for two years now and haven't run into any problems!!!! it's always worked smoothly for me.

Pros

It has a lot of features that GitHub and other competing tools lack. I also really appreciate the option to self-host it.

Sometimes it's not obvious where to find all the functions you need.

Works perfectly with the standard Git commands we already know but adds so many great features for pipelines, continuous integration and managing environment variables.

Finding certain things like variables hidden under Settings > CI/CD isn't always simple but it's manageable.

Working with this tool has been smooth and convenient as a DevOps platform. The built-in pipelines eliminate the need for external services for code deployment or releases which is a significant advantage. It also integrates documentation well and the interface is easy to navigate when working with code or YAML files.

After using it for the past two years I honestly haven't run into any issues. It has been consistently reliable and has always worked well for me.
