centralized Devops solution

Pros

Everything needed for modern software development is brought together in a single ecosystem, from source code management, CI/CD automation to security testing and standards validation. After switching from multiple tools it has become our primary development and automation platform. Even as competitors adopt similar strategies, this one continues to stand out.

Cons

Project and portfolio management still has room to grow especially with features like roadmap and Gantt views that would be useful to see in future releases.

fantastic platform

Pros

We moved to this platform mainly because CI/CD comes built in so there was no need to set up any third-party pipeline tools and that cut a huge amount of time off our project. The platform is easy to use and configure and the code collaboration features are excellent. Every commit is logged and available for review which really helps if someone accidentally breaks something in the code. The issue tracking is also enjoyable to work with and markdown support makes it even better. The Community Edition is excellent and the community support around it has been outstanding.

Cons

An issue is that running it in the same setup is not pratical. Technically that makes sense because of the built-in CI/CD capabilities but it still makes the platform noticeably more resource dependent.

Simplified our workflow

Pros

Being open source and offering a full DevOps platform is a big advantage. It makes collaboration much simpler for different contributors and handling our product deployments is quite manageable. It is user-friendly once you become familiar with Git commands. Integrating third-party tools like Slack, Teams, Jira and others is also pretty easy.

Cons

The interface could still use some improvement. Aside from that features are simple to work with and from what I've seen, integrating supported applications has not been very difficult.

feature flags that just work

Pros

Feature flags in the product have become one of my favorite parts of the platform. Setting them up is simple and linking them to issues makes the whole workflow feel much more organized. On top of that, there are plenty of client libraries across different platforms so integrating them into existing applications is pretty painless.

Cons

It does include CI/CD capabilities that I'd love to use for automatically building and hosting Composer and NuGet packages but getting everything configured has been harder than expected. It's not very easy to understand and the documentation hasn't been detailed enough to make the setup process clear.

well-organized layout

Pros

The way this tool is structured works really well and the dark mode is something I genuinely enjoy using. The milestone system has also been very helpful for keeping track of our progress.

Cons

One annoying issue is that the dashboard refreshes twice when you click on "Back." It gets frustrating after a while and I hope they fix it soon.

secure platform

Pros

Something it does really well is security. They back that up by keeping their source code open and even rewarding hackers for finding vulnerabilities on the platform regularly. On top of that, the website has a clean, user-friendly interface that is simple to understand and pleasant to look at.

Cons

Even though it is well known, it still has not been able to convince many major repository projects to host their work there. Because of that you still need to use GitHub for those projects.

reliable tracking and labels

Pros

Version control and tracking are really amazing here. Once we had everything set up properly, handling them felt smooth and organized. The customizable labels were especially useful for organizing different merge requests and keeping the final project deployment on track.

Cons

The biggest frustration with it came when our team ran into user permission issues. It took a couple of days to sort out something that felt like it should have been a simple fix. The interface also felt a little confusing for some of us. There was even some mix-up around the "Merge Request" option and I honestly think calling it "Pull Request" instead would help avoid that kind of confusion.

nice UI for peer reviews

Pros

Interface is clean, clear and visually appealing. It's been really useful for reviewing code written by other developers on the team.

Cons

One thing that seems missing is that it doesn't offer quite as much features as some competing tools like GitHub.

powerful app documentation hub

Pros

Documentation layout is really clean and useful for app projects. You can host your application on it, keep a history of every change and the security feels very reliable. It works like an all-in-one app builder which makes it even more valuable.

Cons

I honestly have not run into any downsides. The platform seems to be handled by professionals who clearly know this industry far better than I do.

clean interface and fast repos

Pros

Using it has been a pleasure thanks to the fast Git servers, built-in CI options and a clean, well-organized interface.

Cons

Plugin selection which could be broader to support a stronger DevOps workflow is still lacking.

excellent version tracking

Pros

Keeping all software versions organized has been really helpful especially when working with a team since it shows exactly when changes were made and who made them.

Cons

Everything is completely in English. If it were available in Italian too, it would be much more convenient for me to navigate and understand the many features it offers.

Helpful milestone tracking

Pros

It helps our organization keep track of tasks, work effort and key milestones so we can stay aligned and move toward our goals.

Cons

Certain parts of the interface use more space than they need to especially when you're just trying to add a short one-sentence note to an action.

USER-FRIENDLY PLATFORM

Pros

Using it every day has been a really positive experience. It's easy to set up on-premise and the free tier already covers what most small teams or businesses need. Where it really pulls ahead of other options is its CI/CD capabilities. GitLab CI is extremely powerful-you can use it to build source code, run code quality checks, deploy projects and much more. It also lets you connect different pipelines and link multiple repositories together to assemble a larger final project.

Cons

Although it is fairly user-friendly, it's still a large platform and the web interface can feel slow at times. The review system can also be a bit less user friendly than what some competing tools offer. Thankfully, there are some really good browser extensions that help fix those issues.

good product

Pros

Having everything in a single tool has let us replace several others we used before. It covers a lot of what we need, including version control, code review, integrations with static code analysis tools, continuous integration and continuous deployment.

Cons

Resolving conflicts through the website sometimes does not work the same way as resolving them locally with the client.

powerful all-in-one dev platform

Pros

There's a lot to appreciate here: it's open source, can be installed on-premises and comes with a outstanding documentation plus plenty of online resources. The web IDE is genuinely useful and CI/CD with Runner has been a big advantage for us. Board Issue and Release features also fit really well into the way our team works.

Cons

We haven't run into any downsides with it in our setup. The platform stays current, issues get fixed quickly and it's been fully accepted internally by both the development and network teams.

user-friendly project tracking

Pros

It has turned into one of the right tools for managing projects. A few of the most appealing things about it are its user-friendly design and improved UI/UX. One of the biggest advantages is being able to assign different tasks to different team members. The Kanban and Issue Board features are also some of the most important and useful parts of the platform.

Cons

Other than the positives mentioned above, a few areas could still be improved in future updates. Beginners may need a tutorial to start using it smoothly and there are still some features missing that are already available in GitHub.

Best for team projects

Pros

Across almost all of our projects, we rely on it to track changes, manage bugs and reviews, collaborate as a team and handle project management overall.

Cons

Getting used to this tool takes some time especially since other options can feel simpler. The pricing can also be a barrier for smaller companies.

easy setup

Pros

This software covers all the essential pieces for a full development and deployment workflow for us. One of the biggest advantages is the pipeline which is easy to set up especially because we can install the Runner directly in our own infrastructure. The issue tracking and merge request features are very helpful and absolutely hold up against other major competitors. I use it both in the cloud as a SaaS product and in an on-premises setup and it handles my DevOps requirements well while also helping the team collaborate effectively during code reviews.

Cons

Compared with Bitbucket one thing I miss is the ability to see in real time when a teammate is actively reviewing a merge request or pull request. I would really like it to add that as well. Also registering the Runner becomes a little more complicated when you are trying to automate the process with something like Ansible.

Code management platform

Pros

It has become my main source code management platform for keeping all my application repositories in one place. It's a very capable tool and still simple to work with. The CI pipeline is one of my favorite parts because it's easy to set up and gives me the automation I need for deployments. The code review workflow is also really well done.

Cons

It already covers everything I need for my day-to-day work. The only thing I'd really like to see is an out-of-the-box Dependabot integration, instead of having to configure so many things manually.

helpful community

Pros

The strong Git standards support makes my daily work very easy and handling things like merge requests is very simple. The community is also very active and helpful and the modern CI/CD integrations fit nicely into our development process.

Cons

I haven't run into any downsides at this point. The company keeps putting out new versions regularly so the product continues to improve over time.
