What Is SolidCam?

SolidCam is a cloud-based manufacturing platform that allows ‘CNC’ program creation directly inside ‘CAD’ environments, allowing machining operations, toolpaths and simulations to run in one window. It employs patented ‘iMachining’ algorithms that optimize feeds, speeds, and step‑downs to dramatically reduce machining time and increase tool life. The platform delivers modules for 2.5D and 3D milling, multi‑axis, mill‑turn, and Swiss‑type machining, and enables production‑monitoring via its ‘SolidShop’ ecosystem.

system integration that delivers

Pros

Working with it has been especially valuable because it runs directly inside my preferred CAD platform. Its connectivity with the part also makes later design changes much simpler and far more efficient to handle.

Cons

A downside is that getting started with the software takes some time since you need to learn the basics and understand how it works. Also, in simulation you can move forward block by block but there's no option to step backward.

efficient toolpath verification

Pros

It has been a very efficient addition to my workflow. The simulation and verification tools are especially important because they let me confirm toolpath accuracy before anything reaches the machines. That helps cut down on mistakes and saves a lot of valuable time. I also really appreciate the automatic feature recognition since it identifies different parts of the design without needing manual input and makes programming much more streamlined overall. On top of that the initial setup is fairly simple so getting started with the software was not difficult which is always helpful when bringing a new tool into daily operations.

Cons

One issue I run into with this tool is system instability along with performance lag. These problems would be much better if the software architecture were optimized further.

Resposive support team

Pros

The powerful connection between Solidworks and SolidCAM is hard to ignore. Being able to switch back and forth and edit the model while you work feels almost essential. On top of that creating tools and importing them is easier than it has ever been which is a real advantage for us. They also have local reps who respond when questions come up so the customer support is right in line with other software options.

Cons

Every now and then the software runs into glitches and can crash. My biggest concern with this product is not always knowing how stable it is going to be.
