“Top notch customer service”

Pros

A simple and easy way to store software and the customer service has been excellent.

Cons

It tends to get overshadowed by competitors so finding answers through search engines can sometimes be difficult. There are also occasional connectivity issues that come up from time to time.

“LOVE it's free plan”

Pros

It's an outstanding tool because it includes free built-in CI/CD. Depending on the kind of project you are working on, that can be incredibly helpful for making sure every commit or pull request meets the same high standards. Another thing I really appreciate is that, it has the best free plan among source control tools, with private repositories available for a very long time and up to 10GB of storage included.

Cons

If I had to point out a downside, it would be that it is not used as widely in the open source community. I think that mostly comes down to people being more familiar with other platforms especially GitHub which is a bit unfortunate.

“Quick installation”

Pros

Installing it was quick and learning how everything works didn't take me much effort. The way it handles Issues and cards is really well done, the integration with other software is smooth and the graphs are also very useful.

Cons

Documentation could definitely be more thorough and include more detail.

Every stage of the development lifecycle is brought together, in one place and the interface is very easy to use for us.

The hosted gitlab.com service runs into outages from time to time.

“Secure code storage”

Pros

Out of all the tools I use, this is one I really appreciate because it lets me store and share my programming code securely. During some projects, we have had computers fail but with this tool that is no longer a concern since the code stays backed up and ready to download from anywhere in the world.

Cons

There is really nothing I dislike about this tool. It is extremely useful and in our organization it has become indispensable.

“better option than others”

Pros

Private repositories included at no cost for personal projects makes this a better option for us than a similar repository hosting service.

Cons

Interface could look a bit better. There are too many clashing colors though that is only a small issue overall.

“good for medium to large repositories”

Pros

In an on-premise setup as a moderate user, connecting it with TeamCity was easy enough. It performs reliably for both medium-sized and large repositories.

Cons

API for pulling branch details and repository statistics still needs improvement. At times, we need branch information displayed on dashboards to get a clearer view of the branches currently in use.

Pros

Using it as a team is very easy and it handles collaboration between multiple people really well. The planning workflow is also very good and helps keep work organized.

Cons

There's still room for a few quality-of-life improvements but even with that, it's still pretty good overall.

Creating and pushing class content on a regular basis has been easy. The use of SSH adds a layer of security and the interface for pushing content along with commands is quite helpful.

Cons

Users do run into problems when pulling content at times. It would be much better if there were a way to automatically pull the material professors push each day.

“no hiccups observed”

Pros

Across all of our development work it has been very useful. We have had zero downtime and no real hiccups. What sets it apart from other tools is that it covers the full development lifecycle in one platform. That includes issue tracking, built-in documentation for every project and CI/CD integration. It really brings everything together in one place and the pricing is reasonable for a small team. Any company that provides a stable free version and keeps its software open source immediately gets my attention.

Cons

The interface can feel a bit awkward at times and some features are tucked away deep in the menus. Once you learn where things are though, the minimalist design starts to make more sense.

Pros

Interface is very simple to work with. The CI/CD integrations are powerful and save our developers a lot of time. The analytics have made the entire development process much easier.

Cons

No one on the development team has had any complaints about it. We've been using it for 2 to 3 months.

Pros

Coming from GitHub and Bitbucket, this felt instantly familiar. As a completely new user, it took almost no time to get up to speed and figure out how to handle everything I needed to do.

Cons

It's hard to point to much that's wrong. If I had to mention something, the interface could look a little more polished. Other than that, it mostly stayed out of the way and helped me get things done.

“merging codes is manageable”

Pros

Whenever several people are contributing to the same project, Git is the tool I rely on to bring all the code together. It handles merging automatically and I honestly can't imagine having to combine everything manually. Merging code is very convenient and we can also retrieve any previous version by using the commit number. For teamwork, Git really stands out. The merge capability it offers is one of its biggest strengths.

Cons

Merge conflicts can be frustrating at times. They are not always easy to fix and in some cases they can even end up breaking the project.

“Free unlimited repositories”

Pros

Amongst the most well-known tools for repositories and version control, it stands out for good reason. CI/CD integration, an open source foundation and free unlimited private repositories all come included. Branching and merging are handled well and the interface is easy to navigate.

Cons

A problem is that it still does not offer fully customizable permissions. The developer community around it also feels less socially active compared to some other platforms and that is something that should be improved.

Pros

Version control it offers is genuinely impressive and it continues to be an essential tool for keeping code repositories organized and maintained. The community behind it adds a lot of value too, helping projects stay effective and collaborative which is a big reason it remains part of our daily workflow.

Cons

Pros

Uploading or pulling files through Git is really convenient especially when I want to keep useful documents stored there for future reference.

Cons

No major complaints come to mind though pushing or pulling files in large volumes can take some time.

“customizable role based access”

Pros

As a take on git-based version control, this tool performs very close to ideal one in the market. What stands out most is how configurable the role-based access permissions are for each repository, letting people across different levels of the company work with source code comfortably. The freedom to collaborate without worrying about the wrong groups accessing proprietary material or someone accidentally wiping out an entire repo is a real advantage.

Cons

Some older releases of the tool were missing a few quality-of-life features, like an in-browser diff tool. That said new versions keep adding features like this on a regular basis even in the free edition so it's really only a minor complaint.

“every lifecycle covered for free”

Pros

Nearly every stage of the development lifecycle is covered with built-in tools which makes this a genuinely strong platform. A lot of the modules are available for free and the way they work together can noticeably boost productivity across the team.

Cons

One downside is that once you move to the paid version of this tool, you have to pay for every person on the team. Even if someone only needs access to handle issues and doesn't use the rest of the platform, they're still priced the same as a full developer using all the development features.

Pros

The continuous integration and delivery pipeline is both well-integrated and built to perform.

Cons

It would be even better if it connected more smoothly with JIRA and other project management platforms.

“Performs really well”

Pros

From hosting and management to testing and production deployment, it covers the full software delivery workflow really well. A lot of the tools and pipeline capabilities teams usually need are already built in so it gives you a platform that's easy to set up and start using quickly. Its business-oriented approach also makes it especially well suited for LOB applications and internal company projects that don't align well with open source-focused options.

Cons

Since GitHub is everywhere some tools and integrations that claim to be git compatible are actually more GitHub-oriented in practice which can limit your choices a bit if you move outside their recommended path. If your integration requirements are unusual or extremely niche, you may have to put in some extra effort. That said for most users, the built-in pipeline and integration options are more than capable.
