“advanced project management”

Pros

It comes packed with a broad set of tools right out of the box, including built-in CI and more advanced project management features which is one of its biggest strengths.

Cons

On the self-hosted version, I've run into a few bugs, such as views not refreshing properly at times after clicking an action. The interface also doesn't look very appealing.

Pros

This is a widely used cloud-based project management tool. It makes delivering a project to anyone really convenient since you can just share the link.

Cons

I still would not trust it with confidential projects because it does not feel secure enough for sensitive information.

“USED BY NASA!”

Pros

Design looks polished, with a simple, minimal interface that is pleasant to use. The free plan offering unlimited private repositories and collaborators is a huge plus. Even NASA uses it which is pretty fun to see. It runs on Git as the version control system, includes multiple authentication methods and also comes with agile and scrum tools that can make Jira unnecessary in some situations.

Cons

I haven't faced any issues while using it. It is an excellent Git service provider packed with a lot of useful features.

“Free from Microsoft ties”

Pros

Free private repositories are a big plus and I also don't have to think about Microsoft being involved the way I would with GitHub now.

Cons

It covers a lot of the same ground as GitHub but it still misses a few extra features here and there. The bigger drawback though, is the connection speed when you compare them side by side. Cloning, pushing and fetching are really fast on GitHub, while it is noticeably slower. Running the same Git commands can feel like it takes about twice as long on GitLab.

“Nevers lets us down”

Pros

We've relied on it for our private internal Git projects and it has consistently felt secure while making it simple to set up organizations so the whole team can access what they need. We've used it for years and it has continued to cover everything we need. The storage limit is also high which has been a big plus.

Cons

It doesn't offer as many integrations with popular tools compared with GitHub.

Pros

Having the option for personal, private and even self-hosted repositories is a big plus since it gives you complete control over how everything is managed.

Cons

This is not really the software's issue itself but its community does feel a bit smaller when compared with some other alternatives.

Pros

Complete Git features performs really well here in this tool. Adding Docker containers is also very convenient and the commenting tools are excellent. I also appreciate being able to view the code in a way that feels similar to an IDE.

Cons

The UI in this software does have a few issues and from time to time it behaves a bit strangely.

Pros

CI/CD pipelines make continuous integration easy to set up. It also works with a standard Git client, offers unlimited free repositories, has fair licensing for SaaS deployment and gives you the option to host it in-house.

Cons

One downside is that the web interface feels less simple than other Git repository platforms like GitHub or Bitbucket.

Since it's still new, trust is the biggest concern. Asking clients to host their code on a newer website can sometimes be a hard sell.

Pros

Testing a free version before committing to a purchase was a big plus for us. The CI/CD pipelines are excellent, the support team has been fantastic whenever needed and it's clear the product keeps improving with ongoing development and new features being added every year.

Cons

Only a small number of open source developers seem to be on this platform and the UX can feel a little confusing at times.

“startup-friendly issue tracking”

Pros

This has been a really capable option for our startup. It makes it simple to keep tickets organized by priority and the detailed fields plus the option to attach items to tickets are genuinely useful. On top of that, it delivers a lot of value for the price.

Cons

We honestly haven't run into any issues with this software so far.

“Self-hosted CE”

Pros

Running our own Community Edition instance has been a really positive experience and the open-source nature of it is a big reason why. At our company we self-host GitLab CE and use it mainly for source code hosting and CI/CD and it has worked reliably for both. On the code hosting side, it covers pretty much everything you would expect: groups, nested groups, repositories and role-based access control for members. You can also organize members into named groups which is very useful when you want to create a team, add people to it and assign access at the group level. It supports forking, SSH and HTTPS repository access, notification and watch features and a wide range of integrations. We rely heavily on Slack and GitLab's Slack integration has been very helpful for sending alerts about everything from commit pushes to pipeline failures. We also use GitLab Pages to host wiki sites for repositories which is a nice touch. The CI/CD setup is also well thought out especially with runners. Since runners use tags, it's easy to route jobs to the right environment. We use separate runners for different purposes, like pushing to a Docker registry, accessing production databases or applications and handling regular script-based tasks. Our experience with it has been fantastic overall

Cons

Even though it comes packed with features, there are still a few things that feel lacking. I'm hoping newer releases address some of them. The CI/CD feature is good overall but it still misses some capabilities and flexibility that we would really expect. For example, being able to trigger one pipeline from another is not available in CE as far as I know and features like grouping jobs within a stage would also be useful. The CI/CD interface could definitely be better too. There are some UI glitches and not every screen auto-refreshes to show whether a job is still running, has passed or has failed which gets annoying. The job view itself also needs work because long job names or stage names become hard to read. Another issue is with large job logs: when a job finishes, the page reloads and truncates the visible output, then pushes the rest into a downloadable file. Depending on the situation, that can be either helpful or frustrating but in our case it has mostly been an unpleasant experience.

Pros

After switching over from Bitbucket, this has felt like the best free git repository service available right now and I'm really happy I made the move. The interface is simple, the features are placed where they should be and being able to install the whole system on your own server is fantastic. It also comes with a ton of app integrations which was actually the biggest reason I left Bitbucket especially integrations like ClickUp.

Cons

My only real complaint is the speed. Compared with some competitors, pull and push operations definitely feel faster on their platforms.

Pros

Huge range of integrated DevOps tools makes it easy for companies to set up and connect their DevOps environment quickly. Built on modern technologies, the monthly release cycle ensures new features and improvements keep coming on a regular basis.

Cons

It still needs more work on its project management and service desk features if it wants to compete more directly with leaders like JIRA.

“everything covered in one platform”

Pros

Number of features I need for my business is honestly more than I could list and having them all work together in one integrated platform is a huge advantage. The level of control and detail available across the entire workflow is hard to match, whether it's project planning, issue tracking, code reviews or documentation. Throw in the fact that it's open source and it becomes a tool that's very hard not to recommend.

Cons

One thing I've noticed, at least from personal experience, is that bringing new collaborators into it can feel a bit overwhelming because the onboarding process is somewhat intimidating.

Pros

Best thing about it is that it's free and you can even host it on your own server. It also gives you free repositories even for private projects. On top of that, you can run tests and handle deployments from the same platform.

Cons

Getting everything configured can be a bit more difficult compared to other platforms but that usually comes from the fact that it offers more options.

Pros

The design feels polished and simple and there are plenty of features to work with. One little touch I really enjoy is the mouse hover effect on the fox logo-it's small but it adds a fun and delightful bit of personality.

Cons

The permissions setup when adding people to projects is a little confusing to understand.

There are plenty of features included, along with a very easy user management system and lots of integrations.

Cons

I really do not have any complaints. The community edition already offers a lot of features and it is free.
