Key Takeaways
Generated from the text of customer reviews
Matomo is a privacy-first web and app analytics platform designed for banking, financial services, and enterprise organizations. Users consistently point to complete data ownership as a strength, while managing its advanced capabilities may require more technical expertise. Matomo recently released version 5.13.0 that redesigned sparkline summary cards for clearer metric comparisons.
Our Verdict
Matomo is a strong choice for regulated organizations that need detailed analytics without giving up control of their data. Its cost-benefit ratio holds up well for larger, compliance-driven organizations, though smaller businesses may find Matomo cloud pricing steep compared with alternatives. We recommend it primarily for compliance-driven, larger organizations rather than small teams working with tighter budgets.

What Is Matomo?
Matomo is an open-source web analytics platform built to track visitor behavior across websites and apps. It gives businesses a choice between cloud hosting and self-hosted, on-premises deployment, so data can live wherever the organization needs it to. The platform reports unsampled data, meaning it counts every visit rather than estimating from a sample.
What Is Matomo Best For?
Matomo is best known for its Media Analytics feature, which tracks how visitors engage with video and audio content on a site. It reports play counts, finish rates, and drop-off points within specific segments of a video. Additionally, the platform also logs when and where content is consumed and connects that activity to individual visitor profiles in real time.
How Much Does Matomo Cost?
Matomo pricing starts at €22/month for 50,000 hits/month and goes up to €822/month for 5 million hits/month under its Cloud Business plan. The Cloud version also offers a custom-priced Enterprise plan, while the on-premises version is available for free at €0 for the Community plan. Additional on-premises plans include:
- Team: €275/month
- Business: €1,450/month
- Enterprise: €3,400/month
- VIP: Custom pricing

Matomo Use Cases
Based on our analysis of user feedback and Matomo's capabilities, we have identified key scenarios where the software is a good fit:
Banks Replacing Google Analytics Under Regulatory Pressure
Banks run in a tightly regulated environment where analytics tools that share data with third parties or fail to meet regional compliance standards create real regulatory exposure. Matomo is built specifically for this constraint: it gives banks full ownership of their data, meets GDPR, CCPA, and LGPD requirements, and secures access through controls like SSL encryption, SSO, and two-factor authentication.
Financial Institutions Analyzing User Behavior While Managing Compliance Risk
Financial services firms may need deeper insight into how customers navigate loan applications, account dashboards, or onboarding flows while maintaining control over sensitive data. Matomo provides heatmaps, session recordings, and A/B testing to help teams identify where users hesitate or drop off, alongside privacy controls that support requirements such as GDPR and CCPA.
Enterprises Consolidating Analytics Across Multiple Sites And Departments
Large organizations running dozens of regional websites or business units often end up with analytics scattered across separate tools and logins, making it hard to see a consolidated picture. Matomo supports multi-instance setups with roll-up reporting, so data from every property can be reviewed from one place, while each department still gets custom reports tailored to its own goals.
Fintech Companies Scaling Analytics Infrastructure Alongside Security Requirements
Fintech products handle sensitive financial data from day one, which means analytics infrastructure has to meet security expectations well before the company reaches enterprise scale. Matomo applies SSL encryption, two-factor authentication, audit logs, and configurable access controls uniformly, so a fast-growing fintech isn't forced to migrate platforms as its compliance obligations expand.
Is Matomo Right For You?
If you need detailed, unsampled analytics while keeping ownership of your website and app data, Matomo can be a strong fit. Big corporations such as Siemens, Boeing, and Novartis use the platform. It holds ISO 27001:2022 certification and follows internationally recognized information security standards. Matomo also supports compliance with regulations such as GDPR, CCPA, LGPD, HIPAA, and PECR.

Matomo Features
Acquisition
Acquisition tracks where visitors come from before they land on a website, breaking traffic down by search engines, social platforms, paid campaigns, and referral links. It integrates directly with Google, Bing, and Yahoo search consoles and includes a campaign URL builder for tagging individual social posts, emails, or ad variations.
Custom Reports
The custom reports feature lets users build their own reports by combining any of Matomo's 200-plus available dimensions and metrics. A business can, for example, pull revenue by city, filter it to mobile-only traffic, and layer in time-of-day performance, all in a single report built through the interface.
Conversion Funnels
Funnels map the exact sequence of pages, actions, or events a visitor takes toward a defined goal and show the percentage of visitors lost at each step. Funnels help identify which step causes the biggest drop rather than just reporting the overall conversion rate.
Website Heatmaps
Heatmaps visually record where visitors click, how far they scroll, and where their mouse moves across a page, without requiring manual data digging through tables. The feature works across desktop, mobile, and tablet views, so behavior can be compared by device type on the same page.

“clean UI with useful features”
Pros
Matomo strikes a nice balance between being non-intrusive and still offering plenty of useful features. The user interface is also very nice and pleasant to work with.
Cons
One challenge is getting non-technical people to adoptit.Italso doesn't have the same name recognition as Google Analytics.

“On-prem tracking that delivers!”
Pros
It worked very well for a specific need we had such as tracking all user interactions. That was a big advantage for us since this software can be set up directly on your own servers and gives you that level of control quite easily.
Cons
There were a few frustrating parts especially when working across different browsers. Some ad blockers can block JavaScript from running which means the script may not load at all. Another challenge is that once you start usingit, if the knowledge is not shared properly across teams, itcan become a headache for anyone new coming in.Italso gets quite difficult to maintain all those events as the database grows and the number of tracked events increases.
