“simple to track current clients”

Pros

Keeping up with current clients is simple and sending messages through the platform is really convenient. The calendar setup is clear so checking or updating availability doesn't take much effort. It also works well for a group practice since being able to see other team members' schedules is helpful. On top of that, syncing with my phone calendar is simple and the secure system is a big plus.

Cons

The billing section, especially when trying to view co-pays, could be more user-friendly. I'd also love to see more pre-made note templates included.

“Keeps everything together”

Pros

Running my practice feels much more manageable with SP because it keeps just about everything in one place. The mobile app is especially helpful when I need to quickly check my schedule, send client reminders or cancel, update and add appointments on the go. The reports feature is also very useful for tracking outstanding invoices, insurance claims and several other categories. One of the biggest benefits for me is how it handles insurance claim submissions. I really don't want to file those manually or pay someone else to do it so having that built in is something I value a lot. It's also helpful that clients can request appointments and that all of their information is stored together in one system. During COVID, SP responded very quickly and I really appreciated that they introduced a HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform during the pandemic at no extra cost. They offer a large library of training videos although I've mostly taught myself because that's the way I prefer to learn. On top of that, they provide solid CEU classes on a range of topics for a fairly low price. And if you're anything like me and can't always finish a class in one sitting, the reminder emails about unfinished courses are a nice touch.

Cons

Actually getting in touch with customer service can be very frustrating. I end up spending a lot of time typing out questions, then digging through other users' posts and the answers they received. That becomes a real time drain because everyone describes issues differently so a lot of the results aren't relevant and take extra effort to sort through. A lot of the time, I can't even remember how to reach a live chat person. When I do manage to connect with someone, it usually goes okay but even then the process can feel complex depending on the problem.

“Checks all boxes”

Pros

After looking around for something that could handle appointment scheduling, billing and secure record storage, this checked all the boxes. It keeps everything in one place and organized so there's no longer a need to deal with stacks of paperwork or notebooks taking over the desk.

Cons

The note-taking template builder, calendar integration and mobile support could still use more development and improvement.

“generic templates”

Pros

The note templates were useful and sending forms electronically was a feature I appreciated. It was also helpful to be able to access the system from different portals.

Cons

The templates felt too generic and didn't allow for the customization I needed. On top of that, support was very poor and often failed to return messages.

“impossible to get help”

Pros

handling documentation like progress notes and billing is simple and user-friendly.

Cons

Getting real help is nearly impossible. There's no access to management, questions go unanswered and the team seems unfamiliar with 277 files and ZIP+4 requirements. It can take up to two weeks just to get a meeting with a support specialist and even then they often don't understand behavioral health claims. The clearinghouse reps give incorrect guidance about claim submissions and the clearinghouse itself is badly designed, throwing scrubbing errors for ZIP codes and then taking 24 to 48 hours to post a claim. Retrieving your own records is another major problem since there's no way to download client demographics or other information. When issues come up, they push you to post ideas in a forum and wait for votes instead of actually addressing the problem, even though thousands of agencies have already asked for direct support.

“Perfect fit for my practice”

Pros

It has been a hassle-free platform for my practice and feels very user-friendly for healthcare professionals like me. It makes virtual care feel smooth by taking the stress out of scheduling appointments, sending reminders, uploading progress notes and client documents and handling billing since everything is only a few clicks away.

Cons

Honestly, I don't have any complaints about this software, it really feels like therapy reinvented. On top of that, the customer support team is incredibly helpful and consistently replies to emails and questions promptly.

“HIPAA approved platform”

Pros

It's really helpful that this platform is HIPAA approved and it doesn't add any extra cost to the business when it's used just for video conferencing.

Cons

A lot of people still aren't familiar with the software so walking them through downloading the app or clicking the right links to join a video session can be a bit difficult. It would be better if the whole process were more organized.

“Budget-friendly option”

Pros

Found it easy to use and it feels very cost-effective for what it offers. I can sync it with my calendar without any hassle and taking online payments is simple and convenient.

Cons

At this point, I really haven't come across any downsides while setting it up. I'm still in the trial period so I just don't have enough long-term experience with it yet.

“Lived up to its name”

Pros

This software really lived up to its name. Billing was incredibly simple and the video quality during client sessions was consistently excellent. My provider had always relied on it and spoke very highly of it and after using it, I could see why. If the chance came up, I would absolutely move back to SimplePractice. On top of that, their customer service team has been one of the most pleasant and helpful support experiences I've had in the healthcare field. It's nice to see them continuing to improve and I'd be happy to use them again.

Cons

There were only two things that stood out and neither of them was truly bad, they just didn't fit the way our practice and clients preferred to work. One was the removal of the password-based client portal login. While it was still very secure, our clients were more comfortable with the traditional username-and-password setup they were used to. The other was how strict the user roles are when it comes to protecting client documentation. In most cases, that level of privacy control is absolutely appropriate and even admirable. Our practice, however, needed something a bit more group-oriented, where clients could interact with multiple people on our team who each play different roles in their care. Other than that personal preference, SimplePractice comes very close to being perfect.

“Needs a complete overhaul”

Pros

At first glance, it seems like a pretty full-featured solution for therapists who need billing and practice management tools.

Cons

After several months with this software, I'm still running into ridiculous problems. Almost everything I need to do is either not possible at all or requires bizarre, overly complicated workarounds. On top of that, it makes billing calculation mistakes. I had been using an old Windows program from 1990 called "SumTime," and that outdated software was far better when it came to usability and flexibility. With COVID, I decided to switch so I could get electronic filing and HIPAA-compliant telehealth features, among other things. I genuinely regret that decision but at this point I've invested far too much of my own time and my clients' time and energy to move to another system. My clients are worn out and honestly so am I because interacting with this software is unbelievably complicated. SimplePractice promises a lot but what it actually delivers is an overpriced, poorly thought-out and unnecessarily complex platform. To make things worse, their customer support setup seems deliberately built to keep you from ever reaching a real person right when you need help. I'm not someone who struggles with technology either, I'm usually the person colleagues turn to for computer-related help. This software needs a serious overhaul.

“Documentation made efficient”

Pros

Billing insurance takes just a click which saves a lot of time. Being able to build my own forms has made documentation much more efficient and the paperless intake workflow works really well. A lot of the platform can be tailored to fit the specific needs of a practice which is a huge plus. The company also seems very open to user feedback and keeps improving the product with regular updates and new features.

Cons

It definitely took some time to learn and I'm still figuring out the full range of reports available. The online scheduling piece hasn't been my favorite though part of that is because I'm comparing it to Acuity Scheduling which offers a lot more functionality. When I tried the scheduler, I wasn't happy that only new clients could book directly through the website, while existing clients have to sign into the portal to make appointments. In the end, I chose to keep using Acuity since it lets me collect client information at the time of booking and also works for scheduling groups which is an important part of my practice.

“Google calendar sync is fantastic”

Pros

Having it sync with my Google Calendar is a big plus for me since that's something I really need. It also feels pretty simple and not too difficult to learn or use.

Cons

I definitely wish the price were lower. I'd also really like the option to color-code appointments so I can quickly tell whether something is a phone session, a Zoom appointment or an in-person visit.

“Easy to learn”

Pros

The biggest benefits for me have been the paperless intake workflow, online billing and the HIPAA-compliant storage for PHI and billing records. It didn't take long to learn and fitting it into my practice was pretty simple.

Cons

Telehealth is where it feels lacking. The feature set is pretty limited and we need stronger tools to match what other platforms already provide like a whiteboard, in-session chat sound sharing from the client's screen during screen share, a simpler screen-sharing process for clients and better support for group video sessions.

“keeps client information secure”

Pros

Getting started with this software was incredibly simple. My supervisor, who purchased it and used it for her private practice, gave me a brief walkthrough and I was able to start using it right away. I really appreciated the range of features, especially being able to save psychological notes, upload important documents and handle billing by credit card. It also felt very secure when storing private client information.

Cons

My only real wish is that more healthcare professionals and primary care providers used this software since that would make consultation and coordination between providers much easier.

“Feature-rich tool”

Pros

Using this app has been really simple and it comes with a lot of useful features. They also keep improving it and regularly add new ones which I really appreciate. For anything that isn't immediately user-friendly, there are plenty of tutorials that are clear and simple to follow. Overall, I'm very happy with SP!

Cons

The scheduling part feels a bit complex, especially in the way appointment times have to be entered. That setup could definitely use some refinement.

“friendly charting system”

Pros

Running my mid-size private practice has been much more manageable with this software. The charting system feels user-friendly and simple and the templates are very thorough while still being simple to customize. The built-in patient portal has been a huge help. With the integrated messaging, scheduling and billing tools, I'm able to keep everything moving without needing extra staff. Being able to accept and monitor referrals online is also something I really rely on. It gives me enough flexibility to set things up around the way my practice actually works. Since I also work in two hospital systems and a government setting, I can honestly say this feels dramatically better than the EHRs used there like Cerner and EPIC. I understand those platforms serve full healthcare systems but the difference is still striking. I've also worked with NewCrop and ClinicTracker and compared with those, this is on another level.

Cons

A feature I'm still waiting on is the ability to order and review labs directly within the platform. I know that functionality is being developed but at the moment I still have to use an outside application for that. Paper lab orders can be created though so there is at least a partial workaround.

“Helpful patient portal”

Pros

It was not hard to figure out and using it day to day feels very simple. The patient portal has been especially helpful and having messages integrated directly into charts is a really useful touch. Electronic prescribing has also been a huge asset.
