“Helped our practice expand”

Pros

It has really helped my telehealth practice expand without any hassle. One thing I especially appreciate is how simple it is for clients to fill out documents securely and privately.

Cons

The telehealth feature does provide secure video sessions which is important. That said, it doesn't include all the functionality you get with platforms like Zoom. I'd love to see the video sessions offer more interactive tools that make direct engagement between participants easier.

“Efficient solution”

Pros

Having the calendar sync both ways has been incredibly helpful and being able to handle insurance billing all in one place saves a lot of time. The templates for forms, intake documents and emails are also really well done and make the whole process much more efficient.

Cons

I just wish it were more affordable or that they offered a discounted rate for providers who are new to private practice.

“huge template library”

Pros

The platform is simple to work with, nicely organized and comes with a large template library that covers a wide range of unique business needs.

Cons

It took a while to set everything up the way I wanted and a few of the forms I had used before weren't included in the template library.

“Extremely secure”

Pros

It has been very user-friendly. It gives my employees a convenient way to complete their notes without any hassle and the security of the software is another big plus.

Cons

I love just about everything about it. The only downside worth mentioning is that instead of relying only on email for customer service, it would be much better to have a phone number available to contact support directly.

“Top-notch accessibility and practicality”

Pros

Right away, the accessibility, practicality and functionality stood out to me. It feels very user-friendly to use and it's clear it was designed with therapists in mind, especially in the way it matches how we think and approach our work.

Cons

Something that would make it even better is having forms that are more tailored to the laws of each state so they stay fully compliant with state-specific requirements.

“Online booking widget is a plus”

Having the online booking widget was a big plus since I could add it directly to my website.

“Strong community”

Pros

There's a huge amount of information available for troubleshooting and answering questions as they come up which has been incredibly useful. I also really appreciate having a community to connect with, collaborate with and learn from, especially when it comes to seeing how others are getting the most out of the software.

Cons

I haven't noticed any real downsides yet but I've only been using the product for about a month.

“quick training”

Pros

Getting up to speed with it was simple and the note templates are really helpful.

Cons

The ability to add multiple clients under the same email address would be nice. Right now that doesn't seem to work which is frustrating for cases like different family members using the mom's email as the primary contact.

“Feels like a second brain”

Pros

Running a private practice can feel overwhelming at first and it has taken a lot of that pressure off. It feels like a second brain because I don't have to keep track of appointments, payment details, reminder emails and therapy notes all on my own. If I miss documenting something or forget to collect a payment, the system gives me a reminder which has been incredibly helpful.

Cons

I've only used the free trial so I'm still figuring out some parts of the platform and learning how everything works. Even with that, I liked it enough to go ahead and subscribe and start paying the monthly fee.

“Choosing it was the right move”

Pros

The free trial made a big difference for me for a couple of reasons. It gave me the chance to learn the platform before ever scheduling a client and as someone starting completely from scratch, I appreciated how user-friendly it is and how many customer support options are available. The team behind it seems to have thought through just about everything in the design. I also love that they provide educational resources. I honestly can't say enough positive things about it and feel very confident that choosing it was the right move for starting my business.

Cons

At this point, I really can't identify anything I dislike about it.

“Clients can set up appointment reminders”

Pros

At first glance, the platform feels a bit overwhelming but they really do a good job of making it hard to mess anything up. The free onboarding call was especially helpful because they walked me through almost everything I needed to learn which got me started quickly. The automated billing is a big plus and the appointment reminders that clients can set up are something I really appreciate too.

Cons

Every now and then, it takes me a bit to locate certain features. That said, the help center is quite reliable and when I search my question there, I can usually track down the answer without much trouble.

“Reliable payments”

Pros

Having credit cards stored on file has been a huge plus. It gives me confidence that I'll actually get paid every time.

Cons

I haven't come across any downsides yet since I'm still in the trial period but I already know I'll be sticking with it.

“Time-saving notes and claims”

Pros

Being a working mom with two little kids, I needed something that would give me some time back. Getting started took longer than it should have because the video tutorials weren't very helpful and customer support wasn't much help either so I had to figure most of it out myself. Now that I've learned it, it really does save me time. Charting progress notes is simple and it has also helped cut down on desktop clutter. Once I understood the claims submission process, I really appreciated not having to manually enter the same information every time like I used to. Those were two of the biggest reasons I wanted to make the switch.

Cons

I still wish the platform could do more and be more user-friendly. There are several additions that would make SimplePractice much better for me. I'd love a way to track office expenses like supplies and tax deductions, almost like using Excel. Customer service also needs major improvement, they should be easier to reach and much more knowledgeable. Going back and forth over email is frustrating and not a good support experience. Professionalism from support staff also matters. During my free 30-minute onboarding video call, the representative showed up late, was not dressed professionally and looked like they were calling in from a beach house. It was also frustrating that the person seemed to know less than I did and had to keep checking with others before getting back to me. Since I understand insurance well, that was especially disappointing. The tutorial videos were also not useful and honestly felt like a waste of time. In the Coverage Report, it would be very helpful to see specific mental health benefit details since those are often different from a patient's medical benefits, including copays and coinsurance. Choosing an insurance carrier from the insurance list is also more confusing than it should be. Overall, I'm sure I'm not using the software to its full potential but it's frustrating not knowing how to get more out of it, especially when I don't feel like I can rely on their team to guide me.

“better pricing”

Pros

Most of it is user-friendly and simple to follow. It was helpful that the system already included forms, even though some of them were fairly basic and I ended up customizing them with my own details like adding more language to the informed consent they provided. Compared with other EHRs I considered, it was also a bit more affordable and that was a big reason I went with it since I'm new to private practice and trying to keep costs down. I even created a test client using an old email address so I could see how the intake process worked through the portal and it felt simple to use from both the therapist and client sides.

Cons

Some of the settings have been frustrating to work through because certain changes need to be updated in more than one place. For example, if you want clients to book sessions online, your availability calendar has to match the session type and you also have to go into the services section and mark that service as available for online booking. If you miss either step, it will not appear in the client portal and it took me a while to realize that was the issue. Another drawback is with notes and assessments. You have to access them through the calendar and it seems like you can only attach one type of document to each appointment slot. Because of that, I've ended up creating multiple calendar events for the same session when I need to complete more than one document such as a biopsych form and a substance abuse assessment. It's possible there's a better workaround but I haven't found it yet.

“Client portal works well for communication”

Pros

The privacy practice, consent-to-treat and ROI templates are especially useful. On top of that, the client portal works really well for communication and makes it simple for clients to fill out standard forms.

Cons

One thing that feels like a strange omission is the inability to create a group note.

“No need to be tech-savvy”

Pros

Having everything integrated in one place has been a huge plus. I'm not especially tech-savvy but it has been pretty simple to learn. Everything I need for both my clients and the business side is connected and organized which really helps keep things organized.

Cons

I don't really have any complaints. I still haven't had the chance to work through the insurance billing side yet so I'm just hoping that process goes well.

“Tailored perfectly for therapy”

Pros

It's built in a way that really fits the needs of a mental health therapist. Most electronic health record systems are designed more for primary care providers or physicians and those setups just don't translate well to therapy work.

Cons

Navigation can feel a bit confusing at times though that may partly be because I'm still getting used to the platform. I also expected the insurance billing side to be more simple and to provide more detailed information.

“Paperless documentation”

Pros

The software feels very simple and setting up the client portal was simple. I also really appreciate being able to communicate with clients through the portal and handle documentation without paper.

Cons

there's no way to speak with a support person right away. It would feel like the ideal software for me if there were a phone number available for troubleshooting.
