What Is NoRedInk?

NoRedInk is a writing and grammar platform used in classrooms across grades 3 through 12. Students complete exercises based on topics they choose, which can help sustain interest while they practice sentence structure and argument development. The platform includes a ‘Language Support Suite’ for English learners, adding translations, simplified directions, and text-to-speech so multilingual students can access grade-level writing tasks alongside their peers. The platform’s core features are free for any classroom to use, with deeper features reserved for schools on its Premium plan.

What Is NoRedInk Best For?

NoRedInk is best known for its standards- and assessment-based reporting, which tracks student mastery at the school and district level from a single set of dashboards. The reporting ties performance data to the specific state standards and tests a school is accountable for.

How Much Does NoRedInk Cost?

NoRedInk pricing is estimated to range from $16–$19/student/year, with a minimum purchase of 300 students (approximately $5,700/year at the highest per-student rate). NoRedInk also includes a Free plan available to all users, as well as a Premium plan with custom pricing.

In addition to base subscription fees, organizations may incur additional costs for:

  • Implementation: Estimated at $1,500–$7,500, depending on the size of the school or district and the complexity of the deployment
  • Onboarding And Professional Development: Estimated at $500–$5,000. Premium subscriptions generally include educator training and customer success resources
  • Data Migration: Estimated at $500–$3,000 for businesses needing assistance with migrating classroom, roster, or historical assessment data from another platform

Users describe NoRedInk's pricing as relatively high. They often point to the platform's instructional value and usefulness, while others note that the cost can be difficult to justify, particularly for budget-conscious schools.

NoRedInk Use Cases

Based on our analysis of user feedback and NoRedInk's current capabilities, we have identified key scenarios where this software is a good fit:

Classrooms With English Learners At Mixed Proficiency Levels

Teachers managing a classroom where students range from beginner to advanced English proficiency often end up building separate materials for different groups. NoRedInk's language support suite addresses this directly, with single-word translations, translated directions, and text-to-speech built into the same assignments the rest of the class is using.

Districts Scaling Writing Feedback Without Adding Staff

Grading essays at scale can time-taking for English departments, especially in districts trying to increase how often students write. NoRedInk helps teachers streamline grading and writing, allowing them to spend more time supporting students and less on administrative tasks.

Departments Preparing Students For State And Standardized Tests

Schools often face pressure to improve student performance on assessments such as the SAT, ACT, STAAR, and NWEA MAP. However, it can be difficult to identify writing interventions that produce measurable gains. NoRedInk helps in this regard by providing targeted writing and grammar practice along with data that helps teachers monitor student progress and adjust teaching approaches over time.

Elementary Schools Introducing Foundational Writing Instruction Early

Some schools want to start structured writing instruction before middle school but don't have grade-appropriate digital tools built for that age group. NoRedInk's resources for grades 3–5, including adaptive skills exercises and an opinion guided essay track, were built specifically for this gap rather than adapting secondary-level content downward. It's a fit for elementary teams trying to establish writing habits before students move into more demanding secondary coursework.

Is NoRedInk Right For You?

If planning different lessons for students takes a lot of time, NoRedInk can help automate some of the busywork, making it a good fit for educators. The software is compliant with student privacy regulations, including COPRA, FERPA, PPRA, and applicable state student privacy laws. Whether it's a short grammar lesson or a full essay assignment, NoRedInk works for diverse types of classroom work and provides students with tailored practice in grammar and writing.

NoRedInk Features

Scalable Differentiation

NoRedInk uses adaptive exercises to adjust practice based on student students' current skill levels rather than relying on fixed questions. When students get stuck, the system gives them hints, simple explanations, or easier questions to help them keep going. If they're doing well, it makes the activities more challenging so they can continue learning at their own pace. With one assignment, each student gets activities that match their skill level, so teachers don't have to adjust the difficulty for every student themselves.

Writing Curriculum

NoRedInk includes grammar practice and writing assignments across more than 10 writing styles, including narrative, persuasive, and literary analysis. For English learners specifically, the curriculum includes prompts and standards alignment tied to WIDA, AZELLA, and TELPAS, among other EL frameworks. For younger students in grades 4 and 5, the Opinion Guided Essay program provides step-by-step support to help them organize and write opinion essays.

Standards Alignment

Every exercise, writing prompt, and diagnostic in NoRedInk can be filtered by the specific standard or test it maps to, including Common Core, TEKS, SOL, and state-specific framework. It also covers major assessments like the SAT, ACT, AP English Language exam, and NWEA MAP, so teachers building toward a specific test can search by that target directly instead of guessing which content applies.

Must-have writing assistant

Pros

NoRedInk makes learning grammar and conventions incredibly easy and enjoyable. By tailoring sentences to students' interests and requiring them to really understand the topics, it offers a learning experience unlike anything else I have seen. It's super simple to get started, very user friendly and the free subscription already includes a wide range of useful tools for students to practice with.

Cons

There's very little I dislike but two things stand out. First is the price, while it's a fantastic tool the cost can be hard to swallow. Second, some of the built in lessons don't meet expectations. If users are willing to supplement with outside resources, it works well. Including video tutorials like those on Khan Academy would make it even better.

Good but could be better

Pros

The basic features like signing up, logging in and navigating the site are all so simple and user-friendly.

Cons

The website fails to provide an effective learning experience because of its unorthodox method for completing tasks... their approach of making users correct every single mistake does not fulfill its intended purpose and instead feels more like a test of patience, rather than genuinely helping the user learn.
