Flexible add-ons for every team

Pros

One of the best parts is the add-ons you can bring in since they let each team tailor the tool to fit the way they actually work.

Cons

Nothing really stands out as a downside although having more UI customization would be absolutely awesome.

Lets me set reminders for messages

Pros

It is incredibly versatile when it comes to staying connected and communicating with coworkers. It not only boosts productivity and efficiency in a remote work environment but also helps create a real sense of community. One feature I especially enjoy is being able to set reminders for messages so I don't forget to follow up.

Cons

I honestly haven't run into any downsides though I also don't have experience using competing tools.

solid features on the free plan

Pros

Even on the free plan, it gives us all the core features we actually need. It also lets us connect with a few third-party apps which is really helpful.

Cons

The mobile app can be frustrating at times especially when it comes to notifications.

Messages anywhere, flags that help

Pros

Whether I'm on my phone, computer or tablet, I can get to my messages without any hassle. Being able to flag important conversations for follow-up is also really useful and helps me keep track of what needs attention.

Cons

It really depends on everyone actually using it consistently. I still have to keep reminding certain team members to check and respond there which means I can't rely on it as the only or even the primary, way we communicate.

real-time communication features

Pros

Keeping in touch with teammates and coworkers feels effortless thanks to the real-time communication features.

Cons

There's not much to complain about. Occasionally, messages don't sync right away between my phone and computer but that's probably more on user error than the platform itself.

Fun and versatile communication hub

Pros

It is really simple to use, enjoyable to spend time in and it works well whether you're building a community or using it for business communication.

Cons

I don't have any real complaints about it. The only small thing I noticed is that they changed how GIF integration works but it's not a major issue.

Fast live chats

Pros

It lets me collaborate quickly with coworkers and family through audio calls and live chats which makes communication feel fast and convenient.

Cons

For video calling, it still needs support from web conferencing platforms.

Staying connected across teams

Pros

Keeping up with my team and the broader organization is really convenient with it. It makes staying connected feel natural and constant.

Cons

I'd change the way GIFs are added. I'd rather have a dedicated GIF button instead of needing to type /giphy every time I want to share something fun.

Started to feel buggy

Pros

Keeping it running in the background works really well and using it on mobile is very convenient. The standout feature is that everyone on a call can draw directly on the presenter's screen without any setup which makes collaboration much more interactive. Getting a new user onboarded is very simple and they can start communicating almost immediately. The API also turns it into a very useful hub for reminders and system notifications.

Cons

Lately though, it has started to feel a bit buggy. Over the past year, there have been recurring issues with joining Huddles, being removed from Huddles while drawing when the presenter has drawing enabled and getting audio to work consistently. My team has run into these problems on both Windows and iOS.

feature-rich messaging app

Pros

It is a feature-rich messaging app with tons of integrations and broad compatibility across just about every platform. Whether it's Linux, Mac, Windows android or iPhone, there's an official app available which makes it really convenient to use anywhere.

Cons

Some users can't share their screens from iPads during huddles which seems to be more related to Apple's privacy restrictions than Slack itself.

Exceptional status and snooze features

Pros

It has been a huge help day to day especially with the status and snooze features and how well it connects with other apps like GSuite. The option to build custom Slack bots and create message-based workflows is also incredibly useful and when that feature is used well, it gives productivity a real boost. Huddles are probably the standout feature for me because screen sharing is so practical there and having someone annotate directly on your screen makes collaboration much easier than on Zoom, where it usually takes way too many clicks. It has made pair programming with another engineer much more convenient. On top of that, being able to keep channels and direct messages organized has honestly been a lifesaver as the number of Slack channels keeps growing and the search function works really well and saves a lot of time.

Cons

Screen sharing can drive CPU usage up and often causes significant lag. The mobile app notifications are also pretty frustrating because if 5 messages arrive at the same time, the phone will vibrate and ping 5 separate times within milliseconds instead of notifying just once, even when all of them come from the same bot or the same person.

highly effective

Pros

Right from the start, Slack has been highly effective especially with third-party integrations. It's genuinely impressive and very comfortable to use which makes day-to-day work much more convenient. It performs amazingly well with external tools and really helps simplify everything.

Cons

Honestly, I don't have any real complaints. I'm not sure about the cost since I use it as an employee but based on my experience, I would definitely recommend it.

Excellent integration support

Pros

It has a really user-friendly interface and the integration support is excellent, you can hook it up to pretty much everything you use.

Cons

There's not a lot to complain about. If anything some people might say it creates pressure for employees to always appear online but I still think a company can set healthy boundaries and avoid creating the expectation that messages need to be answered when someone isn't available.

still one of the best tools

Pros

After more than three years of using it, I still consider it one of the best tools available. There's both a free version and a paid option so it works well whether your team is small or much larger. It covers a lot in one place: direct messages with one person or a group, voice calls and video calls, channels for all kinds of topics and integrations with other tools like GitHub or HubSpot. Everything stays synced in the app which is honestly amazing.

Cons

if you're not careful about managing your time, it can become a bit addictive to use. At the same time, while it often helps with productivity, there are moments when it can end up being counterproductive too.

Better teamwork across time zones

Pros

Working with teammates in different parts of the world became much more manageable because of Slack. One feature I really appreciate is being able to edit messages after sending them if something was written incorrectly and the emoji reactions make conversations feel quicker and more natural. I also like that replies can branch into separate threads which makes it much easier to follow the context and keep the overall conversation organized.

Cons

Even though most things work really well, searching for files and older messages can sometimes be frustrating because they are not always easy to track down. On the free version, users also can't draw while screen sharing which is a limitation. It can also be difficult to connect with people outside the organization.

Notification controls are awesome

Pros

Adding people to different channels is simple, direct messaging works well and the notification controls are really flexible since you can pause, mute or turn them back on whenever needed.

Cons

Signing in can be a bit annoying at times when you're part of multiple channels although that feels more like a user-side hassle than an actual limitation of the software.

becomes simple to navigate

Pros

Right away, the amount of control you get when setting up your workspace stands out, themes, colors, sections you can add or remove and even how you want the app to open or close. Once you spend a little time clicking through everything, it becomes pretty simple to navigate. The desktop notifications are especially useful because a pop-up shows who is messaging and you can jump right in with a click. Like any app a company decides to use though, it does come with a few hiccups.

Cons

Every now and then, the app seems to freeze while scrolling through messages or the feed. That could be related to where I am in the high desert of California. Uploading pictures or memos is decent but it also seems to depend a lot on the strength of your connection, along with your location and even the weather at times.

Top-notch built-in messaging system

Pros

Across our team, it handles a lot of our day-to-day communication really well. The built-in messaging system is excellent for keeping everyone aligned and on the same page. We also rely heavily on the file-sharing feature which gets used all the time. Channels are especially helpful because they let us share information by topic and get real-time feedback from the people actually involved in a project, without filling up the inboxes of teammates who don't need those updates.

Cons

There honestly hasn't been much to dislike. If anything, I'd love to see a few more customization options like being able to personalize fonts or styles when writing to-do lists or notes for yourself but that's a very minor issue overall.

Works fine

Pros

One of the best things about it is how well it connects with the other software our team already uses. Those integrations make it much more useful in day-to-day work.

Cons

There's nothing major to complain about but it would be nice to see a "Lite" plan added between the Free and Pro options to better fill that pricing gap.
