can pause notifications

Pros

Slack gives me control over communication. I can pause notifications whenever I need to which is really helpful when I'm in meetings or away on vacation and don't want constant interruptions. It also has built-in video calling and I can choose between Slack calls or Zoom when I need to jump on a video or phone call with teammates. Setting up different group chats and channels is another big plus because it keeps conversations organized by topic. On top of that, the integrations are very convenient, I can check my schedule, get reminders and even track deployment progress through connected tools.

Cons

The only frustrating issue I ran into was on Windows, where notifications often wouldn't pop up properly. Because of that, I missed messages and couldn't respond right away. I had to change the settings around just to get notifications to appear when the app wasn't actively open.

Huge range of reactions

Pros

Communication feels really powerful in Slack and I can share just about anything I need to. The huge range of reactions is both useful and fun and the sub-threads help keep conversations organized. My favorite part though, is being able to create all kinds of channels and groups for different needs. I've used it in my personal life and also for volunteer work, including elections.

Cons

Because it is so full-featured and offers a lot, it can occasionally feel a bit confusing. That said, it's still user-friendly overall.

Best chat solution we've come across

Pros

Across our work with both colleagues and clients, Slack has been excellent for what we mainly need, chatting. Whether it's one-on-one conversations, group discussions or live exchanges, it's the best chat solution we've come across especially when we need clients to install it too so everyone can communicate in the same channels. The way it handles automated alerts can also be quite useful.

Cons

That said, the collaborative work features feel limited or not very effective especially things like file sharing, calendar functions and task management.

User-friendly team rollout

Pros

Getting everyone onto Slack was very simple and the platform feels user-friendly overall. Rolling it out to more than 100 employees went smoothly without much effort.

Cons

The only challenge has been connecting it with other apps which can feel a little tricky at times although that may also be because I'm not the most technical person.

More efficient compared to email

Pros

It feels much more efficient than relying on email. It lets us create separate custom channels for different topics, connect a variety of app integrations and even use custom emojis which makes communication more organized and enjoyable.

Cons

File sharing still isn't perfect and at times new features feel like they're pushed a bit too aggressively. When huddles were introduced, for example, I couldn't see the beginning of my messages until I clicked to try the huddle feature.

Real time meeting invites are a plus

Pros

Very easy to operate thanks to its friendly interface. It works well with G Suite and Outlook which makes coordination a lot more convenient. Sharing office files like Excel sheets and documents is simple and the real-time updates for meeting invites are especially useful.

Cons

the system can slow down because of the app itself. There are also moments when the quality of voice and video calls drops.

Favorite team chat platform

Pros

Among chat tools for tech and software teams, this is still the one everyone seems to rely on. It's very simple to use, works well across different devices and dropping GIFs into conversations is quick and fun. I also really appreciate the Huddle feature since it makes it possible to jump into a fast conversation with teammates whenever something comes up.

Cons

From time to time, we run into app lag, delayed messages or even outages. The bigger frustration is the teammate tagging system sometimes notifications don't come through and other times you get pulled into unrelated channels or threads through cross-tagging when it's not actually necessary.

Helpful alerts and updates

Pros

Even when I don't keep it open all the time, the alerts and notifications do a really good job of letting me know when someone is trying to reach me.

Cons

At first, moving between groups didn't seem very accessible but it looks like a software update added that option now.

Clean chat for workplace collaboration

Pros

Around our office, we rely on it for both work conversations and more personal chats. When calling out across the room isn't practical, it gives us a reliable way to have private discussions and collaborate without interrupting everyone else. The Mac app also has a clean interface and feels fairly simple to navigate and use.

Cons

tagging someone in a chat doesn't notify them unless they're already part of that channel which feels annoying , in that situation, they probably shouldn't be taggable at all. On top of that, '@channel' messages can be irritating too since they ping everyone in the channel and plenty of users don't realize that when they use it. Aside from those issues, it's still a good instant messaging tool for work.

Been a great experience

Pros

Running a group of 100-200 college students around the Atlanta area, it has been incredibly helpful for organizing communication. We're able to share files, polls, surveys and more and our members can also create their own fun groups. Overall, it's been a really positive experience.

Cons

There's a bit of a learning curve at the beginning and inviting people into it can be more confusing than on some other platforms.

Quick setup and instant collaboration

Pros

very simple and it lets you begin chatting and collaborating right away.

Cons

It really doesn't measure up to Zoom or other video calling tools. Even for internal team use, the audio calls aren't stable enough and searching for files is not very convenient.

Creative feel

Pros

Getting started with it took almost no effort because it's very user-friendly and nobody on our team needed any training to begin using it. It has a polished, creative feel but even people with very different levels of tech experience can still pick up the features quickly. I also appreciate being able to share all kinds of media in one place like documents, PDFs, photos and more. It really works as an all-in-one hub for teamwork. It has reduced a lot of the random emails we used to send, where someone might get left off a thread or the message would disappear in a crowded inbox. Having everything related to a project kept in one place makes it much easier to stay organized.

Cons

App notifications do not always line up with the actual updates. For instance, one day Slack showed only 5 notifications but when I opened it there were actually 20 messages waiting for me.

Solid customization

Pros

One of the best things about Slack is how many integrations it supports, including Drive, Calendar, Jira, Zendesk and plenty of others. The interface feels very user-friendly, the customization options are solid and connecting third-party webhooks works well. I also appreciate the message formatting features which are practical and make communication clearer and more organized.

Cons

A few areas still need improvement. The audio and video quality could definitely be better, the free plan only lets you access up to 10k messages and the app can get a little unresponsive when there are too many unread messages piled up.

We can't function without it

Pros

It has become something our company genuinely couldn't function without. Every department across the organization relies on it daily. Our sales team uses it constantly to stay connected with Customer Success, Account Management, Sales Operations and Support. Since the shift to working from home, it has become even more critical for the way we operate. Communication through the platform feels natural and efficient and it offers a wide range of features and options. Another big advantage is how well it integrates with many of the other collaboration and office tools we already use.

Cons

It can get pretty expensive. Even so, it has been absolutely essential to our company's success.

Keeps my team in sync

Pros

Working remotely day to day feels much more connected with this because it keeps my team in sync all the time. It also lets us jump on quick calls without any hassle when we need to talk through projects.

Cons

My biggest frustration is the split between the free and paid plans especially since messages on the free version disappear after just a week. Having them stay available for 30 days would be a lot more reasonable.

Love Slack!

Pros

Honestly, I love everything about it. I couldn't do my job without Slack. It makes day-to-day work so much more manageable and the search feature is something I really appreciate.

Helped improve interaction

Pros

It has really helped improve communication and interaction across the organization. Every team uses it for both internal and external conversations and it's also useful for sharing files. The option to create both private and public channels makes it flexible for different kinds of collaboration.

Cons

Search function could be improved. When there are a lot of messages and you look up a keyword that appears multiple times, it doesn't show every occurrence. It mainly pulls up the most recent results which makes finding older information a bit challenging.

Remote work lifesaver

Pros

Working from home would be much harder without it and honestly it is just as helpful in the office too. Between the different ways to communicate like calls, huddles and chat, the strong integrations with plenty of other platforms and the practical features that keep the workspace organized and manageable, it is something I would comfortably recommend to almost any team or organization.

Cons

The 10,000-message history limit on the free plan can feel a little too restrictive for active groups that send messages all the time. A higher cap would probably encourage more people to stick with it since losing older conversations after using the platform for a long period can be frustrating.
