central place for communication

Pros

Across our international team, it has become the central place for communication and collaboration. Setting up groups is simple and it helps a lot to be able to star key channels, pin important messages and link everything with our drive assets. The integrations are a big plus too especially with tools we already rely on like PandaDoc, Salesforce, GetGuru and Filestage. A smaller feature that still makes a real difference is the Google Calendar connection since coworkers can immediately see when someone is tied up in meetings. It is also really convenient that you can start a huddle or a video call from either a laptop or a phone. On top of that, using the @ command to notify an entire channel, a specific group or just one person is incredibly practical.

Cons

A few of the integrations could still be better since more advanced software can sometimes be a little difficult to get working reliably although that may partly come from the third-party developer side. We also ran into an issue about a year ago when some core settings were changed and the app was unusable for a couple of hours. Because Slack is our main communication platform, outages like that leave us in a pretty vulnerable position.

helpful message search

Pros

message search stands out. Being able to pull up older conversations quickly is incredibly useful when I need to reference something from the past and the UI makes finding old messages feel effortless.

Cons

There's not much to complain about though I do prefer the calling feature in Teams a bit more.

clean interface for team communication

Pros

The interface is very user-friendly and it makes it simple for me to stay in touch with the other translators working for the same client.

Cons

When I click a link from an email notification, I can't go straight to the web version without another click on the page that tries to open the app. I don't use the app and prefer working in Chrome so that extra step gets annoying. I've also run into notification issues at times. It seems I'm required to set a time during the day when I'm unavailable and during that period I stop receiving email notifications. Because I don't check Slack every day, I've ended up missing messages because of this. The only workaround I found was setting my unavailable time to the shortest possible window, from midnight to 12:05 a.m. I really wish there were an option to always receive email notifications.

Inconsistent add-ons

Pros

Setting up channels and group chats is really simple which makes it convenient to organize conversations and keep everyone connected.

Cons

On the downside, not every add-on works as reliably as it should so the overall experience can feel a bit inconsistent at times.

Effective way to organize shared knowledge

Pros

It gives the project teams I'm part of a really effective way to organize both people and shared knowledge. We usually handle issues and meeting notes through messages, then keep the conversation going in threads or separate channels so the workspace doesn't get cluttered. That setup works especially well because everyone on the team can still see and acknowledge an update, while those who want more detail can jump deeper into the topic through the related thread or channel. It's a smart way to manage different levels of interest across a team and that's something other tools haven't really supported as well.

Cons

There is a lack of channel-specific censorship or age-based restrictions. I don't really have a reliable way to prevent other students from posting inappropriate messages or images before others have already seen them. I'm not exactly sure what the ideal restriction would look like but it's still a real concern since I'm not watching the channels around the clock. Another issue is that anyone can view any channel even if they haven't joined it which makes it harder to keep certain information limited to specific groups like when two teams on the same project need to communicate separately.

Practical learner groups tool

Pros

As a trainer, this tool is really useful for setting up groups of learners. It's simple to use and the mobile app works very well.

Cons

It's pretty easy to get lost with so many channels though.

You can send notes to yourself

Pros

It feels flexible and approachable and I really appreciate being able to use it without relying on email. All the messages stay together in one place, there's a direct message feature and you can even send notes to yourself which is surprisingly handy.

Cons

it can feel a lot like an upgraded chat tool and if you're not careful, random conversations can easily turn into a real time sink.

smooth calls

Pros

Having separate channels and threads for different topics really helps keep conversations organized and easier to follow. The status feature is also very customizable which makes it simple to show availability or what's going on. On top of that, video conferencing and screen sharing are built in and work really well.

Cons

Honestly, I can't think of anything I dislike about this software.

Detailed solution

Pros

Between the messaging tools and all the connected apps, Slack covers pretty much everything I need. The Huddle feature is especially useful for quick, unplanned check-ins and integrations with Jira, Google Calendar and other apps make day-to-day work much more convenient. Being able to schedule messages for a specific date and time is also really helpful for sending reminders automatically.

Cons

Honestly, there isn't really a feature I dislike. If I had to suggest one improvement, it would be the option to open a thread in a completely separate window.

Pros

It is used all over the world so getting started takes practically no learning at all. It is always available, works instantly and gives plenty of configuration options to adapt it to different needs.

Cons

The file-sharing features are not as developed as they could be.

great for quick communication

Pros

It keeps our team connected in real time which makes communication much more immediate. I can get in touch with everyone on the team within minutes and count on them seeing the message quickly.

Cons

Sharing files through Slack can be frustrating. Bigger files don't always upload well and that can interrupt the flow of communication a bit.

Way beyond what I expected

Pros

At first, I assumed this was just a department chat tool where you could organize people and talk with the right group but it turned out to be much more than that. It's impressive how much you can actually do with it. Beyond messaging, it helps with sales, offers tons of integrations and can even be used for project management and task tracking. It really becomes part of your daily routine when communicating with a remote team. It connects with most of the apps you typically need like Trello and Google Calendar and it even has a bot that reminds you about things, sends notifications and alerts you about unread chats, among many other functions. It almost feels like having a virtual assistant.

Cons

Removing someone from the workspace or board can be fairly complicated and some of the options you need are not very visible.

I highly recommend it!

Pros

It has become my go-to communication tool because of how much organization it brings and how well it connects with other apps. The interface is simple to use and the way everything is laid out makes it practical for handling different needs at once, whether that's chatting with teams organizing tasks or managing projects. It offers a huge range of possibilities and I regularly recommend it when I need to stay organized with new clients.

Cons

Its video calling and voice note features can be a bit unreliable depending on the device being used. That part isn't my preferred option within the platform although I'm hopeful future updates will improve those features.

gamechanger during pandemic

Pros

When our company shifted from office-based work to remote during the pandemic, this became absolutely essential for us. Once the office staff saw what it could do and how much it improved the workflow, we decided to roll it out across the whole company. After moving to the paid version, we ended up building a lot of time-saving processes that really helped day-to-day operations.

Cons

The challenge has been with our field employees especially those who are not very comfortable with tech-based communication tools. We introduced it gradually, starting with the foremen and then expanding to laborers. Even with that slower rollout, this group still needs ongoing support to use it successfully. We regularly do how-to sessions because they are working with tools and equipment all day so learning and navigating software naturally comes second.

Dark mode is a nice touch

Pros

Works really well as an instant messaging tool. It keeps work conversations separate from personal chats which makes communication feel much more organized. The dark mode is a nice touch, the interface is simple to use and I can access it easily from both my phone and laptop. Sharing files and links is quick, replying in threads keeps discussions tidy and the different channels with hashtags help structure conversations clearly. The status options like online, away or in a meeting are also very useful for letting others know my availability.

Cons

Honestly, I've been very happy with it and don't have any complaints.

Quick meetings with huddle feature

Pros

Slack's huddle feature is easily the standout for jumping into a quick meeting and sorting out questions fast. Being able to share screens, chat at the same time and highlight things while the other person is presenting makes collaboration feel much more immediate and practical.

Cons

It can be hard to fully disconnect from work when using it. If notifications aren't snoozed or DND isn't turned on, it can really break your focus during deep work. On top of that, the constant flow of DMs and the habit of checking the app over and over make it tough to stay away from it.

goes beyond basic messaging

Pros

Running an online business without this app would be hard. It's very simple to use and goes far beyond basic work messaging. You can stay in touch with your whole team, assign tasks they need to work on, send voice notes, start video calls and share files, all without leaving the same app. It even lets you check how many hours an employee has been connected.

Cons

I can't point to anything I dislike, there's really nothing about this app that I don't enjoy.

Loaded with features

Pros

Using it feels simple and it comes loaded with features and integrations that make it really useful.

Cons

No real downsides come to mind. I've worked with plenty of messaging apps for business and this one is easily the best. Compared with Slack, Teams feels pretty awful.
