Keeps students organized

Pros

It has made communication and collaboration with remote teams really simple. We use it to keep students organized and stay in touch and since they hardly use email anymore, having instant messaging works out perfectly.

Cons

There really isn't much to complain about. The paid limits are frustrating but that's pretty much expected when you're using a product for free.

helps with project management

Pros

It works well for managing projects especially with channels that can be organized around specific tasks inside each workspace. It keeps team meetings and work discussions more structured so conversations feel less cluttered and easier to follow.

Cons

The interface feels pretty plain and getting around the app can be frustrating. Replying to messages is more of a hassle than it should be and having a new account created for every workspace still feels unnecessary and confusing to me.

Works well regardless of team size

Pros

Keeping up with posts is very simple even when you're working with a team of more than 500 people. The setup also feels user-friendly right from the start.

Cons

I haven't run into any issues while using it and that's been consistent across different organizations.

No more messy conversations

Pros

It has become something I genuinely can't picture working without. It keeps daily communication moving with instant messaging, separate group channels, topic-based discussions and threads that stop conversations from becoming messy. Jumping into quick calls or huddles with teammates is really convenient too. It's also fast to search for older messages or find conversations around a specific subject. The integrations make a big difference especially with Google Calendar which my team relies on to see when people are in meetings and set expectations around when someone can or can't reply.

Cons

I use it every day and honestly enjoy every minute of it!

best tool for collaboration

Pros

Slack has been the best tool for collaboration in my workflow and the way it connects with other apps makes it even more valuable.

Cons

There is a bug where the desktop app sometimes suddenly goes blank and the bot messages can be pretty annoying.

Strong community

Pros

The community side of Slack is what I enjoy most especially how useful the channels are for keeping conversations organized.

Cons

The video feature is the part I'm not really into. It makes me question what it offers compared to Zoom especially when it comes to video conferencing.

Lovely search function

Pros

Keeping in touch with teammates is really simple on Slack. Video calls run well and the screen sharing feature works especially nicely when collaborating. I also appreciate being able to create specific channels for different topics or teams and the search function is incredibly powerful when I need to find past messages or files.

Cons

There honestly isn't much to criticize. I did run into a few minor issues with the mobile app but nothing serious enough to cause real problems.

cuts down on unnecessary notifications

Pros

Using it feels very user-friendly and the channel setup keeps our conversations focused, relevant and optional for the people who actually need to be involved. Team members can step out of channels that don't apply to them which cuts down on unnecessary notifications and helps everyone stay productive. It also gives the team more control over managing their own involvement and older messages or shared files are simple to search for and revisit when needed.

Cons

There is still a chance of feeling overloaded or overlooking certain conversations but that can be managed pretty well. When channels are used properly, people join or leave discussions based on relevance and features like bookmarks, huddles and voice notes are used consistently, it really helps reduce the noise and improve overall team productivity.

Excellent API

Pros

Whether I'm in the office or working remotely, it makes collaboration really convenient. The API is excellent as well and building bots with it is pretty simple.

Cons

My only real concern is the pricing since it feels a little expensive. I'd also love to see a self-hosted option available.

Remote teamwork lifeline

Pros

Working remotely would be a lot harder without this tool since it's basically what keeps our company connected day to day. We rely on it to stay in touch with the team, set up meetings, share files and handle a lot of our communication in one place. It's really convenient that I can use it both on my laptop and on my phone and the option to create separate channels for different topics is a huge plus. That setup helps keep conversations organized and makes it much faster to find the most important details without digging through endless message threads.

Cons

mobile notifications don't always come through especially when I'm away from my laptop.

Wonderful tool for college students

Pros

It has been a really helpful platform for team communication and it's also worked especially well for college students who need to connect with professors and TAs during online classes.

Cons

Getting started with it can feel pretty confusing for beginners especially compared with something like Discord which is more user-friendly. Even so, Slack does a better job than Discord when it comes to integrating with other software.

Amazing scheduling options

Pros

Between the speed, strong security, several ways to share content, threaded conversations, scheduling options and both video and audio calling, Slack feels like a really engaging tool to use.

Cons

A couple of downsides are the storage limits tied to the payment plans and the automatic message deletion feature.

Setup takes no time

Pros

Setup took almost no time at all and I was comfortable using everything within just a few minutes. It offers communication on several levels which makes it really flexible: there's the overall workspace, then channels organized by topic, threaded replies inside those channels and direct or private messages. The built-in video meetings or huddles, are just as simple to launch and manage without leaving the platform. It's also really useful that audio and video clips can be sent instead of scheduling a live meeting since people can watch or listen whenever it works for them. On top of that, it feels very secure.

Cons

Something that can become a problem is how overwhelming it gets if the channels aren't managed properly. When too many build up, it becomes hard to follow everything so I have to stay on top of deleting unused channels or moving them around. The pricing also feels a bit excessive and the free version is a major downgrade compared to Slack Pro. Pro does go on sale fairly often but those promotions usually only last 90 days and can only be redeemed once. Another frustrating issue is message history not being saved which has definitely annoyed everyone on our team at some point.

Nothing comes close

Pros

Right from the polished, attractive interface to the full set of features, Slack has been excellent to use. After more than three years with it, other collaboration and instant messaging tools still don't come close in terms of performance or overall comfort. It supports plenty of integrations with tools such as Jira and Jenkins which has been very useful. We also rely a lot on features like polls and custom actions.

Cons

One weak spot is the calling feature which can sometimes disconnect or freeze especially during screen sharing. That said, huddles work really well and we mostly use those instead of regular calls.

custom emojis are popular in our team

Pros

Day-to-day communication on our team really depends on Slack and it's become a big part of how we stay connected. The emoji options are especially popular with everyone here. One feature I personally enjoy most is being able to make custom emojis and that has been an absolute favorite across the team.

Cons

Even with such a long list of things Slack does well, there's one area that feels like it could be handled better. The "huddle" icon that appears next to someone's name in direct messages can feel a little awkward. For example, if you've messaged everyone on your team and then see two or more people jump into a huddle, it becomes pretty clear that a separate meeting is happening. In a remote work setup like ours, that can sometimes feel a bit exclusionary and may create a negative impression.

Easy on the hardware

Pros

It is simple to navigate and doesn't put much strain on your hardware which makes it a practical choice for teamwork. You don't need a high-end computer to run it so even when working remotely it stays reliably accessible. It also avoids packing in too many unnecessary features which means it's harder to get lost and easier to jump into team meetings without constantly searching around. A channel code is usually enough to get where you need to go. Compared with other video conferencing tools like Zoom, it works more like a one-stop shop since everything is built right into the platform. It also supports image uploads and helpful features like separate channels for specific tasks so you can assign smaller groups of team members to focused work within the same server.

Cons

The interface is clear enough to read but the mostly white color scheme feels a bit plain. It's not a major problem though staring at that same look for long periods can get tiring. Other platforms like Discord, offer more visual variety and customization.

great for group discussions

Pros

It has worked really well for internal communication in a small to medium-sized company. Being able to create channels and tag specific groups helps get messages to the right people which makes communication more efficient. I especially appreciate the integrations with Google Calendar and Google Drive. It also lets you customize notifications, schedule messages and adjust reminders which is very useful. It's a solid option for group discussions.

Cons

Looking up older messages can be difficult and the video collaboration features are not very user-friendly to use.
